    You definitely did the right thing to strip off a little more insulation before using those butt connectors. The more bare wire inside the metal gripper, the better, both for pull-out strength and electrical connection. I would have soldered them because crimp style connections on wire can go bad over time and vibration. But should last a few years at minimum, especially on 52V systems.
    Would be interested in the range extension that you experience with the 2 batteries. With my 48V X-Class, I've gone over 40 miles and still have 60% charge left with just the 1 battery (was only going slow at about 14MPH and pedaling). And your thoughts of voiding the warranty to get more range.

    • @dannyshows
      @dannyshows  Рік тому +1

      I am also a pedaler and I found that I could easily get 40 miles with about half of the charge still showing; very similar to what you experienced. I also rarely ride above 15 miles an hour. However, I have taken my bike to play soccer about 10 miles from my home, and found that on the way back I was exhausted from playing and just wanted (needed) to throttle. I don't want to place that much strain on the stock battery if possible. Adding a second battery should also slow down the amount of cycles I will be placing on the stock battery. I plan on doing some over 50 mile range rides from the suburbs to downtown Indianapolis and back up. I suspect that on those longer rides I will need the extra range. I am not sure I plan on doing an actual range test, I probably will feel a need to pedal and enjoy my ride with the exercise. But I suspect I will get about 40 miles throttle only.
      For me, voiding the warranty is worth the change. I have not had to deal with their customer service, but I would expect that if something broke I would probably end up replacing it on my end anyways. I suspect my repair time would be much quicker than customer service. It is unfortunate because I have had my bike since the end of February, not even three months yet. Either way I'm really enjoying it and have put over 1000 miles on it already. I hope the feeling doesn't wear out.

      I got mine off of Etsy, but dont recall the seller. You can order specifically the color, shape, stitching, etc. It takes about 2 months to arrive from date of order. Etsy has a couple of sellers making these!

    You couldn’t have made a notch on the battery tray/holder instead? 😮

    • @dannyshows
      @dannyshows  Рік тому

      Maybe, this was quicker 😂. In all honesty I am not sure the battery would have fit if I were required to keep the tray straight. In the video you can see that I had to turn the tray to fit the battery. This battery is too big for this set up.

    Would i be able to connect 52 volt 30 ah battery to my x class 52 V 20 ah. ?

    • @dannyshows
      @dannyshows  8 місяців тому +1

      If you mean using a battery blender, then you should be ok (with caveats). I would NEVER connect two batteries without a battery blender as that is very dangerous and could cause a fire. Also, make sure your controller is not above the 30 amp rating of the battery blender. The Ariel Rider I have has a 33amp controller (which is above the limit) and I have yet to have issues, but it is definitely pushing its limits.

      @@skybeyondthelights That's going to be your call, but I did not change the controller. I have not had issues but I am careful to always make sure that it's not running hot. I have yet to have any significant heat issues. I usually wait at least 30 minutes after riding to start charging and make sure to switch off the batteries before charging as well. I keep a Google Nest smoke detector in my garage so that my other Nest detectors sound an alarm in case smoke is detected. The last thing I want is a fire in the middle of the night in my home and most of these issues will usually happen when charging the batteries. It appears you may live in hot weather so you will want to make sure its not overheating. Either way these are precautionary steps you will want to take with any other lithium ion batteries. 30 amp hours is quite a beastly battery, I presume its a triangle battery on the regular X-class and not a step thru? Best of luck, it's well worth it in my opinion.

    So I have recently done this battery modification. Pretty much exactly how you did in the video. I'm getting used to have it affects my battery percentage in range. And it's a little confusing because both batteries read from one battery gauge.
    On my last ride it seems like the batteries are draining a little bit unevenly. The stock battery had 50% and the second down to battery had 75%. Any ideas why?

    • @dannyshows
      @dannyshows  Рік тому

      Can't say I know for sure. I am curious how you are measuring your batteries separately. Are you unplugging the batteries at the battery blender? In my opinion, the stock battery gauge is not very good and bounces all over the place. Either way, if you find that one battery is being drained quicker than the other, what is most likely happening is that one (the stock battery) probably has a higher voltage. This means that the battery blender will pull from the higher voltage battery first and then drain the other battery once they are at the same voltage. I also feel that the stock battery has a slightly higher voltage than the aftermarket battery.

    • @jarretec
      @jarretec 11 місяців тому +2

      Im not sure if you have found your answer yet but from what I heard if you use a blender it sucks from the larger battery until both batteries are at the same level then they drain together. So if one is 24ah and one is 20ah, your 24ah will drain first til they are the same.

    • @dannyshows
      @dannyshows  11 місяців тому +1

      I have not maxed it yet, but can get about 34 to 38 miles on the stock battery and make it home on the secondary battery with no issue. I have done rides as long as 60 miles with no problem. The secondary battery has a switch; I keep it off until draining the first. I used to run both via the battery blender but I like having more voltage for my ride home.

      @dannyshows  10 місяців тому +1

      I get 33 or 34 on the stock. I believe I doubled that with the extra battery I added; thus I think I could get about 70 miles in range. The longest I have done is 65 miles. I don't think I'll ever do a longer ride though, that's a long day of riding. The additional range will obviously depend on the amount of amp hours you are adding via a secondary battery.

    how does this affect range/speed?

    • @dannyshows
      @dannyshows  Рік тому +1

      It has not affected the speed, if it has it's probably about half a mph faster especially at the beginning on a full charge. As for range, I can easily go 55 miles with little pedaling but will notice battery sag at about 25 miles with little pedaling. Either way it has been totally worth it for the range. I am able to travel pretty far and get out in nature.

    • @dannyshows
      @dannyshows  7 місяців тому

      @@youngjay914tv9 my understanding is that the main measure of the controllers is in amps. The x class runs a 33 amp controller which is already a bit over the 30 amp limit on the battery blender. If you use a larger amp controller i am not sure the battery blender would be a safe option. But yes in theory u could get a larger controller to run 60v batteries. UA-cam has people running monster sabvoton controllers on ariel riders and other bikes.E Street bikes has some bundles they sell but get ready to spend motorcycle money if you do.
