I love metal and there's many ways an album's cover can be bad or low effort in there. Best example is Artillery's Terror Squad - the label gave them a budget of $0 for the cover so someone drew it himself
I actually like the album cover because it makes me feel so uncomfortable. The tracks are also fun. Not something I can listen to regularly, but it works well on days where you just want to smash shit up while shutting down your brain. Speaks to the caveman in me.
I remember hearing that Childish Gambino wrote/released 3.15.20 around the time his father passed away, so the lack of album art & track names reflected the emptiness of his grief
The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads cover was so interesting and weird that it made you listen to the album. It did its job and you came out of it with a positive experience, and honestly it makes me want to listen to it too. Good cover for sure.
As a 90s kid: The Nevermind cover wasn't controversial at the time (at least not in Europe). Babys being naked, even on photos was just normal. Before the internet the number of creeps who got access to such photos for disgusting reasons was significantly lower and the problem didn't even occurr to most parents.
I think nevermind is at the point where its too iconic to really be ruined really, yea it can be taken in a weird way but that’s only if you make it I think it has a nice summer vibe to it because of the water? I think the album might not be as memorable without it though, great video!
i mean normal people don't see that and think sexually. it's not portrayed in a sexual or weird way and even on tv they show babies naked for diaper ads, it's not sexual until people make it sexual
I just think who is that baby? Was the image taken for the album? If so, the baby couldn’t give consent for that! Imagine a naked picture of you as a baby being one of the most popular images on the internet That’s terrifying
I honestly love the Homogenic album cover and I think it fits songs like Hunter and Pluto perfectly. Even though I disagree with your take, I really enjoy this video!
Key lyric “the USA is the centre of Jerusalem” heheh, one of the best albums I’ve ever heard though, imagine shoegaze but played by big hearted Texans with great songwriting chops
honestly the donda black square feels perfect to me its such a vulnerable album with a lot of dark subject matter, and the music is beautiful enough to make up for the lack of a cover idrk how to describe it the black just fits
Came from tiktok, loved this video. I was hoping to see Gobs’ “Foot in Mouth Disease” album cover here though “The Grudge” is the only song I know from them; great song, disturbing album cover. Anyways I’m off to binge watch some more of your vids!
I feel like the case with any goregrind or gorenoise album (yes those are genres) or really even a lot of grindcore its impossible to recommend anyone anything because the covers have actual gore on them
YOO my 3.15.20 suggestion made it 🎉 I love gambino and I love that album, but the lack of cover art and titles are a big detriment to what could otherwise have been a big release for him. On the anniversary of the album, he teased a rerelease with cover art, titles and everything, so hopefully that drops soon. The track titles in the current version are just the time stamp where it starts in the album, and, with time being a major concept of the album, I can kinda understand the thought process. Love the little cutaway gag. Always a fan of the content, keep fighting the good fight against genrephobia o7
god im gonna kiss you exactly the lift to experience cover is actually beautiful. not to flex but i have the original 2003 version with the original cover and also the original recordings some of the songs were re recorderd for the newest version i think, and the 2CD packaging and original cover only enhances the experience.
I lay awake at night imagining the boardroom that saw the Certified Lover Boy cover sayin “That’s the one” Also Malibu Ken till I die! (Thank you for the kind words and W video)
On the back of Nirvana, I would say Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy. It’s actually my favourite album of theirs but definitely tainted by the naked children on the cover…
The children are not naked on the cover!! The cover was made by the now defunct design firm Hipgnosis, who did countless iconic covers (i.e. Dark Side of The Moon). The photoshoot was done at the giants causeway and the kids are brother and sister Stefan Gates and Samantha Gates, who were wearing bodysuits!! It was done with the permission of the parents who were there at the shoot. There were actually only those two kids there that day, the cover was edited by hand so that it looked like there were more than the two of them there. Also the colours were edited, which makes it not immediately apparent the kids are wearing tights. However you can tell they they are, if you look closely you can see creases on the fabric which are only possible by wearing clothes. The intention was to create a surreal landscape, almost like there are aliens finding land for the first time. At first I thought the kids were naked, which would be perverse to say the least, but I was relieved to find out they indeed were wearing clothes!! Also Wikipedia is WRONG by saying the kids were naked!!
Oh so the reason I felt uncomfortable with the cover came true! Honestly not surprised. Using an image of a naked baby, when that person can’t consent is just gross!
@pemanilnoobiirc the parents did consent for the photo to be taken and were even paid for it. Plus, I believe Nirvana won the case because it was not suggestive enough to be classed as CSA.
brooo its crazy how much it fell into obscurity, if they wouldnt have made the remastered version somewhere in 2010s 90% of new people wouldnt even know about this band, all the og fans are probably over 40 now
my contribution to this talk is American Doll Posse by Tori Amos. i thought this would be her worst album just by looking at the cover art, it took me two years to finally give it a listen and the album is so good it deserved a much MUCH better cover art. as a graphic designer i feel like i might redesign that cover art one day just so i can finally relax

I feel extremely old everytime I hear a younger person/zoomer say they've never heard of Limp Bizkit or any other big nu metal band back in the early 2000s.

It's not even Christian Rock, at least in the sense in that it's about praising God or whatever. It's a concept album about the second coming of Jesus, and the sound can be described to being closer to My Bloody Valentine than either Newsboys or Jars of Clay.
Turnabout - Cutter Lane & Sematary - Butcher House. the covers are so goofy but i love them and the albums in general. the covers actually fit the albums pretty well
The Malibu Ken style is really popular with Australian skate and stoner rock, (and collectively in aus culture in general idk why) but it really works for them. Like skeggs and Dune Rats. but maybe it's because we have a cultural attachment to it with old home-made youtube cartoons and graffiti that it's associated with those "bogan" types and works for them. People from outside the country might feel differently unless they've seen stuff like Damo and Darren
The most horrendous cover that I have ever seen is The man who sold the world by Bowie; the original one is amazing, mind you, but the American release completely redone the art and it is total cat-vomit. Made me miss out on buying the vinyl...
"Some Are Lakes" by Land of Talk is the definition of a good album with a bad album cover. It's one of the best alternative rock records I've ever heard, but the cover looks like a little kid's drawing.
