If you use the CLEW bindings on a Burton snowboard or any channel board, use the washers that came with the CLEW bindings, but do not use the screws. Those are too long. Use the shorter black screws that came with your Burton bindings (for the channel) or the shorter screws you were using with your other bindings for the channel. If you use the longer screws that come with the CLEW bindings, they will bottom out on the channel.

I've been lucky the last two seasons to have the chance to try 3 new step on or in setups. I found that the boots for K2 highbacks were less comfortable than I would have expected. Now I've rode 2 boards with one nice pair of Vans Infuse, one with the Clew and other with traditional Union Stratas. This weekend will be night riding on new Genesis step ons. These options have made this season exciting by changing it up all the time. Midwest shredder has been a huge part of being in the know across the whole spectrum of all these great options.

I really enjoy my Burton step ons but I do wish the release mechanism was easier to reach like the clew binding. There has to be a way to “hack” it;)
Most people that don’t like the step ons say it’s because they like the straps and the feeling of being secure. I enjoy not having the tops of my feet not hurting.

I still love a traditional strap binding, but not having straps feels great. People don't know this unless they've been riding Step Ons for a little while. You feel light and free compared to a traditional strap binding. If more people gave them a chance, they would see this. Riding them for a one day review is only giving you an intro to the binding. The more you ride them, the better they get.

Yeah, I get a lot of feet discomfort. Eliminating the straps removes one more pain point. I have been running step ons for 2 seasons and love them. I tried both in LAAX this weekend and decided to buy the Clews, since I have size 47 nitro boots already. Of course the Burton boots are easy to roll on (had the old version) but they didn‘t have all version to test. For fellow boarders with big size feet Clew needs a bit longer toestrap but that is taken care of for me. Have good scared wit the binding of your choice guys 😎

Amazing review man!! I have the Burton step on and I love them! I would emphasize the problem with the step on release lever, I bought step ons because of a hip problem that causes me to not be able to strap my right boot comfortably, and while getting in the binding is amazing, releasing that lever on the right boot is very hard!
I want to switch to the clews just because of lever placement…but if you don’t have any issues touching the outside of your heals while on a board, the sep ons are amazing

Having big feet(11.5) I'd worry that with the way you have to slide your toe in with the Clew binding would be a real pain and would cause you to need to run the toe strap looser than I like. When I rode Flow bindings I had that problem all the time. The Flows rode great and I bet the Clew do also, but it defeats the purpose if you're still having to mess with the straps. I've run Step Ons for 3 seasons now and so far they've been amazing...That said, I definitely agree that it's great to see competition in the market place. Great Video as usual! Thanks!

I saw in another video (I think Johnathan Buckhouse's), there are adjustments to slide the front strap forward or something like that so it might be okay! Probably worth looking into if you're interested in the Clews otherwise

    •  2 роки тому +1

I also have 11.5 and it is kind of OK, when I am careful. The front strap is definitely tightened up, thats's fine, it's just a bit in front and a bit low. I need to be careful when getting in. But it fits tight, and when I click into, everything works fine (I have Burton shoes)

I will test the Clew in 4 weeks (I found a pair in L here in Europe). I rired the Step On for almost 2 seasons with Photon boots, but the Burton for tall and heavy people (1m90/100kg) creates hot areas in the toes, it's Infernal after 5-6 hours. It's the rigidity of the StepOn boot that created it. Hence my impatience to switch to a traditional boot... even if I loved my StepOn.

Because my current StepIn Setup for Softboots is getting old and they stopped producing it (F2 Intec StepIn for Softboot - i loved it) i had to look whats on the market now. K2 Clicker is too fuzzy and so i compared Burton StepOn and the Clew. You already mentioned some pros and cons, but i would like to add some: When you you powder or the snow is very sticking (on the boot or binding) i find the clew a little bit better to step in than the burton. And if the snow is really sticky or your boots/bindings are covered with molten and afterwards frozen snow/ice - you can simply use the clew as a strap-binding. In this conditions you dont have to use it as a step on. Also I like to get in the binding while my board already moves down the run: The needed twisting (of the burton) to lock both toe-clamps is nothing i like because i am not very stable during this procedure. Another point why i prefer clew over burton: You can choose any boot - you dont have to buy burton or DC boots. But i really miss my F2-Setup for Softboots! Light weighted, extremely narrow (you could easily put two Boards incl. Bindings in just one Snowboard holder outside of a Gondola - very handy during peak times), extremely easy to step in and out while moving, rock solid...

    Hi-.
Just as a follow-up, I just watched your comparison vidio and realize that my latch-in issue may be related to having advanced the forward lean the full amount. Bummer !
I think Clew has got some design fine tuning to do. I also think its needlessly too heay - little too much plastic. One thing I have learned is that the contoured mesh straps provide way more responsiveness than padded ones.
I so wanted the Clews to workout because I like stiffer Ride boots. I'm a carver, Not into park/terain injury risks at age 83 !

The ruler and the swath work best for me. The swath is the most flexible but I love that boot. Comfortable and easy to put on and take off. If you like stiff and not a lot of movement, then the photon or the ion would work best for you. Those are super responsive and on the stiffer side. You can go regular step on or Genesis. I still have the regular step ons and they work great. I hope to get a set of Genesis though. The hammock is comfortable overall but it feels great riding rough terrain.

Hi, in this video I was using the regular (non genesis or X) Burton Step On reflex binding. By the way, the génesis and the x are also reflex bindings. They’ve only made a few limited edition EST bindings. The reflex and the est is the way it mounts to the board.

Hi, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sold on the Burton Step Ons until I tried them. In fact, at first I thought they were for lazy people. I was really wrong. I gave them a shot one day when a local store was closing and they sold them at a discounted rate. After that, I was impressed by them and was sold. For me, it’s not so much about the extra work of strapping in. I can easily strap into a binding. For some it is. For me, it’s just about a fun way of riding and getting as many laps in as possible without having to wait. People that ride these kind of bindings have different reasons for why they use them. There is a big difference in time strapping in that you won’t notice unless you don’t have to do it anymore. Most of my friends and I use straps and step ons. We love both. When someone is using their straps, we are waiting and cracking jokes about it. Small hill or big mountain, they are beneficial in a lot of ways that people don’t even realize unless you ride them a lot. I still love a strap binding as well. My favorite is the Burton Cartel. Next season I still plan to ride more strap bindings. It’s just difficult to convince yourself to go back sometimes. Both are great though 👍🏽
Thank you for your advice! I’m always down to hear what people have to say. I will take what you say into consideration. This is great advice actually. When I’m not filming, I usually turn my head and my upper body (upper body and lower body separation) and pop 180s easily. Unfortunately when I’m filming with the selfie stick, I catch myself feeling stuck and not riding to my potential. I was just talking about this with my brother yesterday. When I put the selfie stick down, things are much easier and I ride a lot cleaner. I’m trying to force myself to work through these challenges and getter since I don’t have anyone to film me. Thank you!

I did 76/83 straight days in Austria. These things are pretty junk. Both hammocks came off (they're held on by a single pop rivet and two plastic teeth),. The toe clips (rear) wore down becoming less reliable for entry and ultimately releasing during riding. The gas pedal (under foot) falls off because it's only retained by little plastic teeth. Happened 2x to me and I found someone else's on the mountain... The Photon boots fell apart completely across both toe boxes. This is because they stiffened the whole boot and then relied on unreinforced double stitching at the toe seam.
If you carve and want more than 40-50 days forget these. If you are true beginner and want maybe 4-5 seasons doing only a week or two each season then yeah these are good. As long as you have the balance to take advantage of the entry system... And never progress your riding...

the clew binding is more designed for stronger built people. when there's a blizzard, i see people get stuck trying to pull the handle (you need to really pull it to be fully ejected from the lock). When there's thick cover of snow, the lock mechanism gets stuck as well, you need to wiggle your feet out of it. Another side effect was that the clew binding has to be really tight, otherwise it'd fall from the chairlift. To fully locked in, you need to align your upper binding perfectly to the lower binding, if it's too far left or right, it gets locked in on one side but missing the other. The general idea was good, but they need to make adjustments to it to make it right.

    • @hunterhodgson7653
      @hunterhodgson7653 Рік тому

There is no case of these bindings detaching while on the chair lift, it's just mechanically impossible with how they are built. They are designed to need your weight in the heel of your boot for the lift mechanism to release (it's not based on how hard you pull). For cases of not being able to put your weight on your heel easily to release the binding, I just unstrap just as a normal binding does, which I've never needed to do on the mountain. I recommend you try the product out before leaving a negative review

We've all had the same problem, it's the reason why I wrote it so people dont just hear all the PR bs, but hear some actual existing problems they'd run into, which I think it's fair to say. For the record, it has nothing to do with putting weight on the heel, the handle pulls half way due to the hook not releasing from the lock, which is a major defect. Have you actually tried or snowboarded on a steep angle on black diamonds or double blacks from Vail or SLC? When it's icy, what the hell could you do. So stop making accusations and let people speak of the existing problems. So people are aware and the company should fix it, it's the only way to make a product better instead of shutting people up about it. jeez

Everyone has different reasons why they use them. I like both strap bindings and “step in” style bindings. When the step ons first came out I thought they were for lazy people. My curiosity grew over time though and I bought a set when a store closed down near me. I was blown away when I rode them and found out how good they really were. I kept riding them and they just got more and more fun. I could do everything I could do with my normal strap bindings, they were lighter, and they were great for carving. For me, getting in fast is not about being lazy. I run a lot and I stay very active. For me, riding this is all about fun. When you start riding these, you realize how bad ass it is to get in fast. Ratcheting really becomes a waste of time and a waste of energy. That energy I can use for more park laps or hiking. You don’t realize this until you try something like this. For some people it’s not the “cool” thing, but believe me, this stuff is good. Also, straps are not without drama. I’ve broken straps, ratchets, lost screws, and even broke a highback falling on a big jump. Nothing is perfect, let’s be honest.
