I’d like to try the supermatics at some point just to be able to compare all 3 of the top step in offerings. I take them off most of the time but I’ve worn them in the gondola a few times. For lunch or lots of stairs I take them off, I do have a buddy that leaves his on and walked around most of Teton village that way🤣
I've ridden all three. The Burton's are great if you don't ever want the strap entry option and don't mind being locked to their boot choices. The Supermatics are amazing and my personal preference for quick entry just because of the abilty to ride whatever boot I want. The only downside to them IMO is their weight. I wouldn't ride the Clews again if you paid me, the straps are garbage, the hardware is garbage, and the overall construction is on par with a cheap rental binding, there is zero ability to justify their price.
Loved the vid and i couldnt agree more with your takes. Ive been riding clew for almost 3 years now and everything you mentioned is accurate. When i was oversees i even lost a strap screw but was able to get a replacement at the resort. Last winter i was riding in some pretty deep snow and i thouggt i was able to click in but after i hit a kicker my foot came out mid air. Obviously user error but with all step in style bindings you have to be extra careful. Also i cut some eva foom and added some padding to my clews for a softer ride and it worked really well

Ya I talked to one guy who actually replaced the straps with some burton ones just because he wasnt crazy about the straps on the CLEW. So it’s good to know it can all be used more interchangeably if need be. Ooooooo that would be terrifying haha. Good thing it was deep snow😅glad you’re alright. Ya I always do a little pull test with my leg just to make sure. I did a few runs in deep snow with the single click but once I got that second one again was when I figured I’d just use the straps just to be extra secure. I’ll still take the trade off of using straps on powder days and then using the step in mechanism for every other day😁
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes I also stick to just using straps on those deeper days now lol. But I just added some extra foam on the underside of the binding to fill some of the empty space on the outside and toeside parts of the binding so it wasnt just plastic on plastic. It also added a little canting to the binding which made loading the tail and doing presses way more comfortable for me. Im 115 lbs on a good day so these bindings are really stiff for me so i needed the extra comfort. I also messaged the clew guys a told them to offer a softer strap and they said it is something they were thinking about, but i think i might just throw an arbor or rome strap on this year.
Good review with a subtle but understandable bias. 25+ years boarding, started late, in my thirties, now looking forward to many more years but feeling the decades of abuse. I have used various step-ins over the years and always given them a few weeks on the snow to get a propper idea. Typically, because I really want them to work but eventualy I find myself back in traditional straps. The park is almost out of bounds for me now, my abused back and creaky knees prefer mellow carving but my heart wants to rip and occasiinally I still go hard, on and off piste. Pre-clew set up was Salamon Dialogues with Highlanders, I currently ride a Super 8 pro and Gremlin. I've used most of the clasics over the years but this is where I'm at now. In recent years I have had a few weeks on the Nidecker and Burton steps, hoping they would make life easier for me. Both were disapointing, for all the obvious and well publicised reasons. I wont bother talkning about the nidekers, they were about as useless as flows and those old K2 step ins! The Burtons seemed promising, although they restricted your boot choice. Sadly, they would often cause me knee pain, when trying to get in or out. The release leaver is even more awkward than usual straps, making you bend even further and this played havoc with my lower back. I'm no slouch or criple but, as you get older, you feel these things and have to think ahead. Eventually, they became unworkable for me. I can totally see how they would be the same for a younger 'me', had I become tired or injured. I board with a freind who also has them, he makes the same complaints but, sticks with them. (He's an aragant tight arse, unliekly to admit errors or reinvest). That aside, I'm not convinced I liked the feel of the Burton boot/binding combo. Despite what others report, I felt they lacked precision, feeling over damp and at the same time, weirdly lacking the right suport and cushioning. At first I thought they might be more suited to free style but, the lack of any meaningful suspension might mean they suck at that too. Like many Burton products, probably perfect in West coast powder? Sadly crap, everywhere else.😢 I was extremely skeptical of Clews but, was drawn in by the position of the release leaver. It means less bending.😊 Stepping in and out, is a joy. No special knee and ankle twisting, just an easy up/down in/out, that can be performed it just about any situation you would normally stand, to strap in. They work well with any boot so you have the option to ride comfey or stiff, choosing form all the boots out there (including Burtons, if you must). Once riding, they have a similar feel to the Highlanders, very precise but not overly stiff or uncomfortable. Similar shape and spookily similar components. (To the point that you have to wonder if 'Clew' is either taking ques from or secretly a subsidiary of, Salamon.) Forgetting the quick release for a moment, I like them as a standalone binding. Being able to choose from conventional straps or quick release is very reassuring. Using the QR, is less energy sapping, allowing you to focus on your riding, not your binding. Particularly useful on short runs, like indoor facilties. Like any step in system, I dont think they are nessesary or for every one but, the Clews work very well as a stand alone binding. Having the option to step in/out, is a welcome bonus, that quickly becomes a habit. Especially when, unlike all the other steps ins, there doesn't seem to be a down side. They definately suit me and suspect I will soon order up another base plate, waving the Highlanders good bye. Just want to give them a bit longer, incase, like all the other step ins, I eventually find that little niggle! My other half is younger and loves off piste adventures. She rides and Orca and has masive tits,,,,, which get in the way when bending over to use conventional strap-ons. She loves her Clews, because now she doesn't have to bend over and put up with people staring at her beautiful arse.😂
Nice! Glad to hear the CLEWS are working good for you also! I tried to be as unbiased as possible, i really do enjoy both and think both are a great setup just depending on what that rider needs. But once i tried the CLEWS it made me a bit biased towards the Burtons simply because the clew just worked better for me. They took something that I thought was great and gave me just a bit more! I can definitley see that on the Burtons, the getting out motion can definitely be a tad awkward. And that's one thing that sold me on the CLEW as still being able to have straps for those deep snow scenarios just knowing no matter what i could still get in or out, vs the burton if its too deep and you can't clip in, you'd essentially be stuck. And i know with something like the Nidecker they have locks on the straps so its not quite as easy to rub them as a traditional strap binding.I've never looked into the highlander, i want to look it up just for comparison now to see the design. that's awesome! Glad she's enjoying them as well 🤣😆
I feel like the selling point of Burton is the simplicity of it, like you don’t ever need to unstrap like with clew when you decide to walk around you need to unstrap
Definitely looks cleaner, but the selling point of the Clew's is anyone can slap it on their snowboard without having to buy new boots. Rarely do people need to replace both the boots and bindings at the same time.
I’ve been riding for nearly 30yrs. They don’t deserve the amount of hate they get. I enjoy riding mine. Some dampening would dramatically improve the ride. Imo. And I’d imagine it’s in the works for the next run. One thing that no one talks about. It’s a bit on the hefty side. Mine (M) are 5LB total. A noticeable difference compared to StepOn.
Nice! Glad to hear you like them too! I think the majority of the hate is people who haven’t even tried them and are just jumping on the online trolling bandwagon. I think if more people tried them they’d be shock. I do agree the dampening could be better and I definitely assume that’ll eventually get an upgrade. I enjoy the more lively feel of the board under my feet so it doesn’t bother me too much. They are a bit hefty compared to step ons. Although I am curious how much more the step on boots weigh with the extra hardware, I know it’s not much but I wish I’d measured before I sold mine off. Theyre still lighter than the Nidecker supermatics though. Each binding on those is about 3lbs
I hate the straps on traditional bindings. I've tried lots of boot/binding combos. Either the straps are painful or the bindings are too loose for good control. In the past I've run older step on type bindings and hardboots just to not have to deal with strap pressure. So the Burton Step Ons are the ones for me.
Ahhh I gotcha. I can definitely see that. It is super nice having zero straps. Plus I ran the photons so it had that “strap like feel” I’m in the same boat I like my straps super tight but I have to have the perfect boot/binding combo or it does start to hurt my feet. So far my Clew and DC Control has been a solid combo
I said it before and I’ll say it again, I still struggle to understand why the clew release system isn’t the default (I know they have a patent) but my point being it’s the most logical and sensical way of doing it in my humble opinion. The Burton step on with the clew release system would be perfect.
I added EVA foam to 5 SPOTS ON MY CLEWS. They ride as comfortably as any binding, without chatter, dead spots, or vibration. Love them. I'm happy to share details and photos if I can figure out an easy way to do so.
I also had the Burton's stepins for 2 years and now the Clew for almost 3 years. I loved the Burton's better, but their boots are too tight for my feet. Even their wide boots. So I switched to Clew, and this will be the 3rd season I'll be using them. They're both good, but if you have wide feet, get Clew, cause you can get any boot you want. Unlike Burton's that you have to get their boot.
@@RawRides4U ahhhh nice! Well that’s good you like both at least. I can see that though. I don’t have wide feet but still had to run the wide Burton boot to alleviate the pressure points from the clips on the boot.
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes It's not just you. I met a slim 5 foot girl once with size 7 that uses Burton stepins and she also complained about her boots being too tight. And I met a sales guy who works at a ski shop that said it's a known issue with Burton.
I watched this because I'm looking into trying the Clew. I tried the Nidecker supermatics and had too much difficulty stepping into them. I personal opinion is that they're better for people with boot size less than 11.5. I ran the burton step ons all last season and like them, but they're difficult in deep snow situations if you have to unstrap. One thing I wanted to mention is that I don't fell I have to do any twisting motion to get out of the step ons. I find them really easy to get out of.
I’ve wanted to try the nideckers just to be able to compare all 3. I’ve been loving the CLEW though. The deep snow I never got to test with the burtons but was definitely always a concern of “what if” which is why I like these because soon as it gets deep I just use the straps. Then once the powder days are over back to clipping in. I will say with the step ons the newer versions you don’t have to twist as much as the previous gen design. It’s a bit easier getting in/out since they redesigned the clips. I had a pair of each generation.

If you need a Burton part, they are happy to overnight them to you. All you have to do is call and tell them the part broke and make sure call early in the morning is easier to get through tell them apart broke and they’ll ship them right out.
Great review. How do you find the required Burton boot. More or less stiff than what you would normally ride with? Perhaps you could add that component to your review.

I went with the burton photon which was one of the stuffer options(there is more flexible choices) and initially I thought it was too stiff but after I got used to it and broke them in some I actually loved them and preferred them over a softer boot. Definitely turned me onto stiffer boots from here on out for sure!
I have the burtons and love them. However I wear a leash with it, not because I think they will eject with a crash or blow off on the lift. I’m worried someone else on the lift will accidentally kick the release and bye bye board
Just my opinion - the step ons gave me a really horrible hot spot on my pinky toe side. I’m trying Clew this year to try different boots because with the Burton there wasn’t really other options
I’ve Heard that from quite a few people actually. Which boots did you use? I’m just curious. I had the photon wide because I heard if you got the wide this wasn’t an issue and I never had any problems. But I will say that’s definitely a huge plus to the CLEW Being able to use any boot. I think you’re gonna really be happy with them
Ahhh gotcha. I was just curious. Ya I don’t normally wear wide either but I saw a few people say that before I bought them so that was the route I went and it never gave me any trouble 😁
@@brohammerdo you have collapsing arch? If you do, an insole with proper arch support could help. I’ve had issues with the pinky toe joint with snowboard boots and bike shoes since my arch collapses making my foot wider. Started running insoles with arch support and it’s been feeling a lot better with the same boots.
I have this exact problem as well with the photon step ons. Its fine for a day of riding but if you're going out for a full weeks worth you'll start to hurt after a few days.
How does the clicker x hb square with the clew and the step-on? I had the original clickers from the mid 90s and loved them. Sadly, i can't find any replacement boots nowadays.
Thanks for your interesting review ! I just own a pair of Supermatics and I'm very surprise how easy and tight it can be. I'm glad that I've been able to keep my boots too (Ride who doesn't work with Burton here)... But I never tried these two other sytems, I see that the Clew are the easyest to clip but then you have the keep the big strap on the feet all day, it doesn't look that practical... Also for information my Supermatics worked way better after 3 or 4 days as the big straps took the shape of my boots, before that it was not so easy to get in and I also could feel them pushing on the top on my feet... But I would love to have your opinion on the 3 kinds if you find a pair of the Nidecker : ) Ah and for the weight I wonder how much the step-on weighs with their boots compared to others with boots too given that elements in the binding are incorporated into the boot.

The clew straps were about the same way. They were never uncomfortable but definitely got more comfortable after a few days when they got more formed to the boot. I will say a lot of people think you have to leave the highback and strap on all day, I actually just made a whole video about it. I leave it on skating through the lift line or real short walks, but if I’m walking far I’ll just unstrap them like a regular binding. It goes on just like a regular ankle strap so it’s honestly not noticeable whether it’s on or off and super easy to take off😁hopefully eventually I can get a few laps on some supermatics 😁
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes the "extra" weight is likely pretty negligible. The step-on set ups are some of the lightest options you can get. I don't have the non step on photon boots, but i weighed my photon wide step ons and k2 mayasis wide boots and they were both 1.1kg, and my L step on bindings are lighter than my Union ultras, fwiw
@@EwokyBalboa definitely! With no straps or extra hardware definitely the lightest option. I will say I love my clews but I could definitely feel a difference in weight when on the step ons vs a regular binding vs just how light they were
So I only really walk on them in the snow around the lift lines. If I’m going much further than that, I’ll just unstrap like a traditional binding. They do have a rubber pad on the bottom to help prevent them from wearing down the actual plastic. I have a buddy that has walked around Teton village in them, and through the parking lots. It’s really personal preference 😁I would assume though a lot of heavy walking on concrete would over time where that rubber down so that’s why I just unstrap 😁

When I first came to the mountains I chose snowboard over skis because if the number of items to carry and keep track of. I don't want my bindings to be detachable like that so I'm going with Step On.
There seems to be this weird stigma of hate toward the clew bindings from longtime snowboarders. This is the only balanced review I’ve seen. Back in the late 90s before I took like two decades off of snowboarding, there was the same stigma toward any type of step in system. Now step in is OK just not the Clew style? Honestly I don’t get it. I bought a pair of supermatics last year and they are OK but not great. Being able to use whatever boot you want is a huge bonus. Maybe I’m picky but I just don’t feel like any of these systems going to feel as perfect as a traditional binding…
@@jtuds I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that feedback. You are absolutely right. I don’t understand the weird stigma/hate on the clew. I think honestly just because it’s something different and among a certain group within the snowboard community it just became cool to hop on the troll bandwagon when the vast majority of these people hating I’ve never actually tried/ridden on them at all. Most people are very surprised when they are first able to try them by how seamless they can be. Again they may not be for everyone, everyone’s got different preferences but I’ve ran into quite a few people riding them the last few seasons and anyone I’ve seen running them on the mountain loves them just as much as I do. When I first started running Burton step ons several years back, that was the one that got all the hate, then once clew came out all the hate shifted from the burtons to the clew, and somehow the supermatics stayed out of the crossfire. I think just where it’s similar to the flow🤷🏻♂️ Ah nice! I would actually love to give the supermatics a go at some point just to see how they compare to these 2 options. I’ve just had such a positive experience with the clew I haven’t had a desire to switch.

The CLEW just tick more boxes for me and my last 2 seasons have been my favorite of all time and going into my 3rd season of running the same CLEW bindings this whole time

I don’t have a video of it but I talked with a guy on a chairlift once that was ski patrol and once was in the comments of one of my older videos. The guy in the comments was talking about getting stuck in deep deep powder and his foot got hung up under part of a buried down tree and he wasn’t able to take his foot through the motion required to get out of the burtons. He said his buddy that was with him had to help him dig his foot out so he was able to climb out and free up his board. Then the guy on the chairlift mentioned if people had injury’s like a broken ankle or something along those lines. You’d still have to take your foot through the same motion to get it out of the binding so you could get to their foot. I said they needed like an emergency release lever of sorts that would kick the boot out, similar to a neck brace has like a safe option. Because your only other option would be to take the foot fully out of the boot, which would be more difficult with it still stuck in the binding. Which obviously if you have an injury you don’t want to have to jerk it around more than necessary. Again these are low possibilities of these happening but the fact that it can happen I figured made it worth mentioning 🙂
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes ah ok yeah the motion would make sense when dealing with an ankle injury. I know Union bindings have the traditional style binding but the back support slips down. Just doing some research on which step in/on bindings would be more beneficial for my next set up

😎Great review, but i get the impression that you like the Clew bindings a lot more by the way you choose your words to decribe any positive points with regard to the Burton bindings. Positive Burton points are mostly followed by however, but.... Also Important to know that if you contact customer support and you are a team rider, you will ALLWAYS have very swift solution. I missed the part where you mention that you are a teamrider by the way. I heard of stories, thats a very shady way of decribing the safety of Burton bindings. I am not a Burton fan but, if you get in a big enough crash with the clews you WILL get hurt and it could be hard to get the to release. THERE IS NO WAY THE CLEWS ARE SAFER THAN THE BURTONS, if so please show us some real proof and not ' i heard stories of'.. Thank you.
Alright so this will be a lengthy response so bear with me but I’ll be fully open and transparent in addressing all of your points. First and foremost I do just want to clarify this isn’t a sponsored or paid video, nobody asked me to make this. Yes I am currently a CLEW team rider but I wasn’t always and they’ve never told me what I can or can’t say(I also haven’t asked🤣)so this whole video is solely based on my honest experience with the bindings, this is a video that I have wanted to make for a while, I just waited a bit to do it so that I had plenty of time on both. I was also hoping to get the step ons in powder, but unfortunately that never happened either 🤣 So honestly, I loved my Burton step ons and I still think that they are a fantastic system. Had I not tried the CLEW I would 100% still be running them and I still don’t really have anything bad to say about them. I loved having no straps, I love how they rode, and I love how lightweight the bindings were. Honestly, I thought the Burtons were a perfect system, so when CLEW first reached out to me and asked if I wanted to test their bindings I figured I would test the bindings, compare and contrast the two, and that would sort of be the end of it. But after running the CLEW For a little while, I really like how the bindings rode, I like that they do fit any boot(the most comfortable snowboard boots I have ever used for the Travis Rice snowboard boot, which I had to sell when I switch to the step ons, hopefully one day I will have them again) I like the CLEW For me is a bit easier to get into, plus like I said, I do like having the option to use the strap if I find myself in a scenario where I do need straps. Again, I like both and I don’t think that there is a right or wrong answer. I think it will boil down to what each person is looking for specifically to get out of their bindings. For me that just happens to be the CLEW. Now as for customer service, when I reached out to them, that was only my 3-4th day on the bindings so I hadn’t reached out to ask them about getting an affiliate link/promo code/ any of that stuff yet. I didn’t go about doing that until several months later. And I actually wasn’t even considered a team rider on the website till just last month. So I don’t think I got any special treatment at that point. Now as far as the safety. I think maybe I should have elaborated a bit more on that. So there were 2 different people that I talked to about it. 1 guy was in comments of one of my step on videos. He said he was snowboarding deep powder trees and wound up getting stuck and got his foot caught under some underlying branches and wasn’t able to do the motion required to get out of the step ons and him and his buddy had to dig his foot out so he was able to do the release motions and get his foot out to hike out. The other guy was a ski patroller on a chairlift and he was talking about helping someone that had injured their leg(I can’t remember whether their leg or ankle was broken, it was one of the 2) but they had to remove the step on binding and the only way was still to take the leg through the required motion to get it to release. And I said it would be nice if there was some sort of emergency release for a situation like that. Both of these scenarios, although rare, the clew would be better simply for the fact that if you couldn’t for some reason use the regular release, you could still just undo the straps like a traditional binding. Giving you multiple ways to get out of the binding.
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes Thanks for the lenghty reply. I get it that when you started using your Clews (witch you did not have to pay for) you were not a team rider. But at the time you made this video you are. Thats very important. (Look at Loopop a youtuber who reviews synthesizers, he starts every video with a 'full disclosure'.) And if you would have mentioned that you really LOVED your Burton bindings it would have been honest. They ride great, and if i undertand you correctly BETTER than the Clew (if you appreciate reponse.) I get it the Clews are userfriendly. Thats a great selling point. But the Burtons have that to. Learning curve for stepping in is a non issue, 2 try's at home en your good to go. (And if you are as stoked as i am when buying new gear, you probably be 'boarding' a lot in your bedroom😄). If you compare the amount of bending required to release both bindings, it is negligible. Bending your knees 5 cm (2 inch) more takes no extra effort what so ever. If you want to be a decent boarder and able to control your snowboard on the slopes, you must be able to do that regardless of what kind of bindings you have. About your two elaborated situations with the Burton bindings i still think they are misplaced in this review becaue as you say yourself they are very specific and i consider them 'cherry picking'. If you would be truly transparent you could have come up with a situation where the Burton bindings would have been better of. If it is not your own experience you should have left them out of YOUR EXPERIENCE review. Last but not least: if you are a rider who wants to progress is snowboarding i wouldn't recommend a Clew or a Burton binding step in binding. Because your stuck with a very expensive 'not so' responsive binding. But i can't hold that against you because maybe that is not your goal.
Great points but I disagree about being a progressing rider with Burton. They do have a learning curve as they made the board more responsive than they normally are but as a low intermediate rider I feel more in control and progressed a lot with them.
I am not a big fan of needing to purchase a binding specific boot, Clew make much more sense seeing that most people use traditional bindings, I like the option of how you want to use the Clew is all up to you

I haven’t actually tried the nidecker yet. I would like to just to see how it fits in. From what I have seen, and just based off of what people have said that I’ve talked to, my only gripe with it is, it does seem to get packed up with snow, more easily, and the straps aren’t quite like traditional straps, so they’re not as easy to use like these are, if you do find yourself in a situation where you need the straps. Honestly having the high back attached to your boot, you don’t notice in the lift line whatsoever, it’s really not bad at all
I have them on one of my boards and as far as quick entry binding go they are my favorite. My only critique is you do sacrafice some lateral flex because of the large base plate. I haven't ridden the clews, but in talking to people who have ridden both they say the clews are infinitely worse in this regard and lack the responsiveness of the nideckers. I've also heard complaints of the dead spot being huge on the clews. I'd also wait on the Clews until they've been out for awhile and have reviews from average joes and not just influncers. Not sure if you noticed, but suddenly everyone and their mom is posting about these bindings that are a mid tier at best. They are also insanely overpriced IMO.

Nice. I hope to eventually try them just so I can accurately compare all 3 of the top quick entry bindings and see how they all do. While it is true I do have an affiliate link for the CLEWS I am just an average joe, weekend warrior(although I’d say now because of UA-cam I make some additional trips) but that being said I’m the one that asked CLEW for an affiliate link after initially reviewing them. I really enjoy how they ride and the performance I’ve gotten out of them. After a year and a half I’ve got no complaints🤷🏻♂️they’ve been out for several years now and each year have slightly tweaked or improved the design. They’ve been out since 2019 was when the first one released.
Ooooooo what a sick place to snowboard though! Thats awesome. Here’s what I’ve learned about the CLEW after 2 years in them. On a powder day I just use the straps if it’s snowing all day or till the last part of the day once it’s tracked out. I can still get the first click typically in powder and have ridden like that many times and been fine but to feel extra secure I’ll use straps. Any other scenario I’ve never had an issue. So it’s perfect for most days, I’ll make a tiny sacrifice for powder 🙌🏻
I’ve never actually looked into the weight difference of the boot because it does have a few extra pieces on it. I’m sure it weights a bit more but I’m not sure how much 🤔now I’m intrigued
not enough to notice. my step on photons are the exact same weight as my k2 maysis (1.1kg/2.4lbs per boot). obviously not a direct apples to apples comparison, but they are both double boa and the photons even have the ankle strap
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes I personally find the Clew binding itself very good. The problem is that I don't like carrying around half the binding on my leg. Unfortunately, the Burton binding is not usable for me. I ride with very stiff and hard snowboard boots. I've always felt that the boots are a bit too soft. Fast riding has always felt quite mushy to me. In my opinion, the Nidecker binding is the best among the three. You don't need to buy an extra boot, and you don't have to carry around half the binding on your leg.
Ahhh I gotcha. The burton photons and ions are super stiff but also a super high dollar boot. See I know a lot of people gripe or look down on CLEW for the highback aspect but it honestly doesn’t bother me, I don’t really notice them in the lift line and then if I’m walking, I just unstrap like I would’ve done with traditional bindings anyway🤷🏻♂️ But I haven’t tried the Nidecker so who knows. I definitely don’t think there’s one right answer for everybody, everybody’s gonna have their own personal preference. 😁
I have the experience using both clew and supermatic. Last year I got the clew binding used it for days. The main issue I had was about the ratchets weren’t secure both toe strap and ankle strap in place. After few runs , the straps came loose and almost left the highback behind. I need to retighten both straps every time before ride down the hill . I contacted clew, they told me there is a lock on ratchet to secure the strap but I didn’t find it. It just like a typical ratchet. I’m not sure if I got an older version binding. Anyways, they issued a refund for me this year. And also they were some minor issues I had, the hook on the highback get stuck at the base plate. I believe there is a learning curve to step in your highback in right angle to align the baseplate perfectly. This year I bought the supermatic, I didn’t have a full testing of this binding with just one day of riding. However, this binding addressed the issues that I had with clew, they have a little lever to slap in fully lock the ratchets. With this feature of the binding, both toe strap and ankle strap stay in place during the full day of riding. This is the biggest pros I find on this supermatic so far compared to the clew binding. I will never worried about the possibility of losing the highback nowhere in the mountains. For the price points, supermatic is way cheaper than clew binding. I got mine with one of the retailer in the states. I got the 20% off on their msrp $399 usd for my supermatic while I can only get the most 10%off on $499 for the clew with UA-camr promotion code. Clew only sell their binding through their website but you can find supermatic on retailers in America.

I think ur opinion there about having multiple parts is advantageous, more parts=more point of failure, amongts the top three step in system rn, step in is still ahead except on deep powder, simple by having a much much simplier design.
They’re both good options, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong choice. I prefer the CLEW but I think every rider has their own opinion. I like both but the CLEW ticks more boxes for me
if you get 12 laps you will get about 12 minutes in the whole day. What one thing we are not pointing out, is with the clew, you still have to buy a pair of boots. Is not that a pair of boots just appear that is no cost involved.

Have you ever actually tried them though? Anytime I’ve talked to other people also running them, they’ve all been happy. The only ones I see hating on them are people on the internet who all hate off of “here say” without actually testing them for a day. I’ve only talked to a few people on here that have used them that weren’t happy. But in person I haven’t met one yet. They work well, ride great and are comfortable over long and multiple days back to back
Angry tells it how he feels about it, but clews aren't really for people like angry. When you have 150+ days, you are going to have different concerns compared to someone who is a weekend warrior like the OP. When you have that many days, you have a legitimate concern that your equipment is going to fail you, so adding a bunch of extra failure points like the Clew does is an absolute no-no.
Johnathan Buckhouse and Snowboard Pro Camp are running them and they both get 100+ day seasons as well🤷🏻♂️ now me on the other hand I WISH I had that many days a season🤣🙏🏻one day haha
I'm thinking about getting myself a pair of clews. One thing that comes to my mind is skating...that part of the mounting system that goes under your heel, does it bother when you have to skate a bit on flats? I guess that if you are taking a break at the resort and walk around, you can just unmount the straps like on a regular binding, so I guess is not going to be a problem to walk...
Nope. You don’t notice it skating at all. I leave the highback on my boot for all the skating around lift lines or if I’m walking from one lift to the other if it’s in snow and a short walk. But if I know I’m going to walk far, go to the bathroom, get food etc, I’ll just pop the straps like normal. Heck there were times we started walking and decided to go further and I’d just take the one strap off and pop the highback off my boot and put it back on the board. It’s a super easy system to use 😁
Versatility section should be clumped in with the weight section. A plus on one side means a minus on the other. Also, your safety section didnt consider the fact you can remove the foot from the boot directly. No need to use the unlocking mechanism in the case of a severe injury.
I could’ve maybe condensed the categories a bit but I wanted to make sure I highlighted each section of the bindings. I still would’ve delivered the information the same regardless🙃and yes you could remove your foot from the boot but depending on the instance/injury it still would be easier to get the boot detached from the binding to be able to slide it out easier.
I’m just now getting more into carving so I didn’t feel like my expertise was quite good enough to go really in depth. Both are quite stiff and responsive and I’ve seen some incredible carving done on both. I believe if you’re someone that leans the highback more aggressively, that the burton can lean a little further forward, but both from what I’ve seen perform about the same 🙂👍🏼
i use my burton step ons on my donek, I can't hold a candle to knapton but can carve deep enough that I get toe drag on commercial "wide" boards when i go for those deep toe trenches. They do really well, but if you like to ride with a lot of forward lean, that's one area that they are lacking, which does make heel side carves on a 30cm waist board a little quicker to fatigue on. I'm looking at picking up the genesis versions to help with that as mine are gen 1's
You got half a second delay when switching from heel side edge to toe side edge on the Burton. For high performance carving or deep slope turns, it matters a lot. It messes up the forms for beginners and they would never be able to learn how to turn a snowboard efficiently.
I know a lot of people talk about the play you have in the heel so I can definitely see that but I always felt like in the burtons I had a faster response time and much more responsive binding where I was directly attached 🤷🏻♂️
I would like to know about forward lean on CLEW. I do have a lot of forward lean on my Flows and Cartel. Would there be an issue on stepping in with CLEW if i max the forward lean option? Thanks in advance
So I run mine only about halfway leaned and have 0 issues. I have heard it can be a little trickier when you do have the lean, maxed out. But from the people I have talked to that run it that way they say you can get the first click no problem and then just do a little hop on your heel edge and you’ll get the second one fairly easy. And just to clarify, I have ridden with just the first click in deep deep powder, and that second click would engage itself as I was riding.

So I will say in deep deep powder I run the straps just like a tradional binding, it’s just easier, but any other conditions I used the step in/out method and it’s never given me any trouble
I feel like Burton has gone all in on the step on. There strap line up seems to lack compared to other company's. It just takes some of the fun out of mishmasing Board binding boots. And as good as the may be. No pro runs them in eny comp.
now I'm intrigued. i haven't looked at their traditional straps in awhile. I used to love their bindings and ran the malavitas for a few year. I'll have to look and see if anythings changed! haven't seen any pros run them in Comps but I've seen videos of them going much bigger in them than i ever would, same for the Clew and even Nideckers, so that's good enough for me😆
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes I use to run all Burton setup. These days i just think its to much of a commitment to one brand. with the step on. And not sow much that there lagging. More that other brands have gotten better. I say Jones/Now Rome/bataleon Union and Nitro all have better offerings in strap Bindings then Burton have. With a lot of them focusing on shock absorption and vibration dampening. The ease of use with step on is definitely top tier. Maybe no pro is running them in freestyle for now. but the response maybe good for boardercross. Just my own opinion. Not hating on burton 🙂🙂
True. I definitely can see that. I’ve always wanted to try Jones or Bataleon Bindings just because I’ve heard such phenomenal things about they way they do allow the board to flex. Vs you don’t here as much about burtons other than occasionally about the cartels
Both myself and my buddies that run the burtons are all over 180 and haven’t had any issues🤷🏻♂️. That being said I would like to try the nideckers to see where they fall in. The only issue I have with them is they’re heavier and the way the step on mechanism works from what I’ve seen, it binds up much easier in deep snow and the straps aren’t quite as easy as these which are tradional straps. But that’s me just watching reviews, I’d like to try them at some point

i've actually seen someone mod the burton's with a cable going through a tube bolted to the highback with a handle to pull the lever. It looks much more professional than I just described, and the handle they used is a style that does not look like it could catch on anything,which is one thing I don't like from the looks of the clew release is it looks like it's begging to snag on something, but that same thing would likely make it really easy to do what you mentioned. edit: found a vid of it /watch?v=5b5IdHyVFT0
Great review. Have a group of us that use Flow, Step Ons and Clew. Step on and Clew are better than Flow and in my opinion Clew are better than Step Ons but the Step On rider says they are best :) I did have my high back fall off while on a lift but I think that was due to be showing off how they work to other people in the queue and then knocking the ratchet loose without noticing

Fugg get Nidecker Supermatics if you NEED something step on, but it shouldn’t take any competent snowboarder more than 2 seconds to strap in their back binding and you should be able to do it while moving. Clews are the worst bindings on the market

I can’t help but assume their business model was to get influencers to ride their stuff to get people that don’t ride much/well to buy their stuff. These have to be worse bindings than any $150 pair from any established brand. All of these steps in are up-charging for people who think strapping in is a hassle. Just get good. Not even good, just get mediocre and learn some low speed balance. Influencing people to buy an inferior product for more money is immoral
I would like to try them, just to see how they compare. But just based off of what I have seen as far as how they function, it seems like they would be the easiest out of the bunch to get bound up in deep snow. And where their straps, don’t work quite like regular straps because of the locking mechanism on them it would be a pain to use the straps if you had to over and over as well. But I’d like to get them a go just to see where they stack up
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes I have the Supermatics, I also have size 9.5 boots and got the L versiono f the binding, which supports up to size 10.5 boots, honestly it's hard getting in, I feel that I have to loosen the heelstrap from my prefered tightness before I can step in, half the time I can't get my boot to fit, I've noticed it happens more on really cold days, maybe the cold stiffens the straps. The fact that I can't get in the fast way every time and I still have to bend over kinda annoys me tbh, I bought them mainly because of a herniated disk in my back and to avoid bending over so much. The locking of the straps I find I don't ever need because I haven't seen them loosen on me at all. But it's easy to unlock though, its basically the classic release button on every strap, but you just press it to lock out the ratchet, in rest it functions the same as any other relese, I guess maybe you have to pull a bit harder, but I didn't feel I had to put in way more force or anything. There's also the problem that you have to push on the lever to unlock the mechanism but then you have to pull your leg which are complete opposite movements and because of this sometimes I actually find it hard to press the lever in uneven terrain and pull my leg afterward. Clew having a pull lever that matches with the motion you will do with your foot probably feels 10 times better. Besides the above, they feel really good, I find them decently butterable as well, and the lack of absorbtion doesn't really matter unless you're hitting the big jumps.
Nice! Hopefully one day I can try a set just to properly compare all 3 of the top step in options. The clew are super easy and smooth to get in and out of and once I set the straps for the day I don’t have to touch them again(unless it’s a powder day) you do have to keep your weight on your heel to get them to release but other than that it’s smooth entry and exit everytime😁
Not exactly. While it is true CLEW did send me my bindings a year and a half ago to do my initial test and review. I’ve never been under any sort of contractual agreement with them. Now yes it is true that I reached out to them for a promo code for my followers, only after using them for a few months because I do genuinely love and believe in their product. What about the walking up stairs and around gondolas? would you take off the clews for lunch?

I take them off most of the time but I’ve worn them in the gondola a few times. For lunch or lots of stairs I take them off, I do have a buddy that leaves his on and walked around most of Teton village that way🤣
I've ridden all three. The Burton's are great if you don't ever want the strap entry option and don't mind being locked to their boot choices. The Supermatics are amazing and my personal preference for quick entry just because of the abilty to ride whatever boot I want. The only downside to them IMO is their weight. I wouldn't ride the Clews again if you paid me, the straps are garbage, the hardware is garbage, and the overall construction is on par with a cheap rental binding, there is zero ability to justify their price.
Loved the vid and i couldnt agree more with your takes. Ive been riding clew for almost 3 years now and everything you mentioned is accurate. When i was oversees i even lost a strap screw but was able to get a replacement at the resort. Last winter i was riding in some pretty deep snow and i thouggt i was able to click in but after i hit a kicker my foot came out mid air. Obviously user error but with all step in style bindings you have to be extra careful. Also i cut some eva foom and added some padding to my clews for a softer ride and it worked really well

Ya I talked to one guy who actually replaced the straps with some burton ones just because he wasnt crazy about the straps on the CLEW. So it’s good to know it can all be used more interchangeably if need be. Ooooooo that would be terrifying haha. Good thing it was deep snow😅glad you’re alright. Ya I always do a little pull test with my leg just to make sure. I did a few runs in deep snow with the single click but once I got that second one again was when I figured I’d just use the straps just to be extra secure. I’ll still take the trade off of using straps on powder days and then using the step in mechanism for every other day😁
Did you just stick the foam on top of the footpad?
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes I also stick to just using straps on those deeper days now lol. But I just added some extra foam on the underside of the binding to fill some of the empty space on the outside and toeside parts of the binding so it wasnt just plastic on plastic. It also added a little canting to the binding which made loading the tail and doing presses way more comfortable for me. Im 115 lbs on a good day so these bindings are really stiff for me so i needed the extra comfort. I also messaged the clew guys a told them to offer a softer strap and they said it is something they were thinking about, but i think i might just throw an arbor or rome strap on this year.

Good review with a subtle but understandable bias.
25+ years boarding, started late, in my thirties, now looking forward to many more years but feeling the decades of abuse. I have used various step-ins over the years and always given them a few weeks on the snow to get a propper idea. Typically, because I really want them to work but eventualy I find myself back in traditional straps. The park is almost out of bounds for me now, my abused back and creaky knees prefer mellow carving but my heart wants to rip and occasiinally I still go hard, on and off piste. Pre-clew set up was Salamon Dialogues with Highlanders, I currently ride a Super 8 pro and Gremlin. I've used most of the clasics over the years but this is where I'm at now.
In recent years I have had a few weeks on the Nidecker and Burton steps, hoping they would make life easier for me. Both were disapointing, for all the obvious and well publicised reasons.
I wont bother talkning about the nidekers, they were about as useless as flows and those old K2 step ins!
The Burtons seemed promising, although they restricted your boot choice. Sadly, they would often cause me knee pain, when trying to get in or out. The release leaver is even more awkward than usual straps, making you bend even further and this played havoc with my lower back. I'm no slouch or criple but, as you get older, you feel these things and have to think ahead. Eventually, they became unworkable for me. I can totally see how they would be the same for a younger 'me', had I become tired or injured. I board with a freind who also has them, he makes the same complaints but, sticks with them. (He's an aragant tight arse, unliekly to admit errors or reinvest). That aside, I'm not convinced I liked the feel of the Burton boot/binding combo. Despite what others report, I felt they lacked precision, feeling over damp and at the same time, weirdly lacking the right suport and cushioning. At first I thought they might be more suited to free style but, the lack of any meaningful suspension might mean they suck at that too. Like many Burton products, probably perfect in West coast powder? Sadly crap, everywhere else.😢
I was extremely skeptical of Clews but, was drawn in by the position of the release leaver. It means less bending.😊 Stepping in and out, is a joy. No special knee and ankle twisting, just an easy up/down in/out, that can be performed it just about any situation you would normally stand, to strap in. They work well with any boot so you have the option to ride comfey or stiff, choosing form all the boots out there (including Burtons, if you must). Once riding, they have a similar feel to the Highlanders, very precise but not overly stiff or uncomfortable. Similar shape and spookily similar components. (To the point that you have to wonder if 'Clew' is either taking ques from or secretly a subsidiary of, Salamon.)
Forgetting the quick release for a moment, I like them as a standalone binding. Being able to choose from conventional straps or quick release is very reassuring. Using the QR, is less energy sapping, allowing you to focus on your riding, not your binding. Particularly useful on short runs, like indoor facilties.
Like any step in system, I dont think they are nessesary or for every one but, the Clews work very well as a stand alone binding. Having the option to step in/out, is a welcome bonus, that quickly becomes a habit. Especially when, unlike all the other steps ins, there doesn't seem to be a down side.
They definately suit me and suspect I will soon order up another base plate, waving the Highlanders good bye. Just want to give them a bit longer, incase, like all the other step ins, I eventually find that little niggle!
My other half is younger and loves off piste adventures. She rides and Orca and has masive tits,,,,, which get in the way when bending over to use conventional strap-ons. She loves her Clews, because now she doesn't have to bend over and put up with people staring at her beautiful arse.😂
Nice! Glad to hear the CLEWS are working good for you also! I tried to be as unbiased as possible, i really do enjoy both and think both are a great setup just depending on what that rider needs. But once i tried the CLEWS it made me a bit biased towards the Burtons simply because the clew just worked better for me. They took something that I thought was great and gave me just a bit more! I can definitley see that on the Burtons, the getting out motion can definitely be a tad awkward. And that's one thing that sold me on the CLEW as still being able to have straps for those deep snow scenarios just knowing no matter what i could still get in or out, vs the burton if its too deep and you can't clip in, you'd essentially be stuck. And i know with something like the Nidecker they have locks on the straps so its not quite as easy to rub them as a traditional strap binding.I've never looked into the highlander, i want to look it up just for comparison now to see the design.

Definitely looks cleaner, but the selling point of the Clew's is anyone can slap it on their snowboard without having to buy new boots. Rarely do people need to replace both the boots and bindings at the same time.
I’ve been riding for nearly 30yrs. They don’t deserve the amount of hate they get. I enjoy riding mine. Some dampening would dramatically improve the ride. Imo. And I’d imagine it’s in the works for the next run. One thing that no one talks about. It’s a bit on the hefty side. Mine (M) are 5LB total. A noticeable difference compared to StepOn.

I think if more people tried them they’d be shock. I do agree the dampening could be better and I definitely assume that’ll eventually get an upgrade. I enjoy the more lively feel of the board under my feet so it doesn’t bother me too much. They are a bit hefty compared to step ons. Although I am curious how much more the step on boots weigh with the extra hardware, I know it’s not much but I wish I’d measured before I sold mine off. Theyre still lighter than the Nidecker supermatics though. Each binding on those is about 3lbs
I hate the straps on traditional bindings. I've tried lots of boot/binding combos. Either the straps are painful or the bindings are too loose for good control. In the past I've run older step on type bindings and hardboots just to not have to deal with strap pressure. So the Burton Step Ons are the ones for me.
Ahhh I gotcha. I can definitely see that. It is super nice having zero straps. Plus I ran the photons so it had that “strap like feel” I’m in the same boat I like my straps super tight but I have to have the perfect boot/binding combo or it does start to hurt my feet. So far my Clew and DC Control has been a solid combo

I said it before and I’ll say it again, I still struggle to understand why the clew release system isn’t the default (I know they have a patent) but my point being it’s the most logical and sensical way of doing it in my humble opinion. The Burton step on with the clew release system would be perfect.
I can definitely see that. Taking the best of each and putting them together would be pretty sweet.

I also had the Burton's stepins for 2 years and now the Clew for almost 3 years. I loved the Burton's better, but their boots are too tight for my feet. Even their wide boots. So I switched to Clew, and this will be the 3rd season I'll be using them. They're both good, but if you have wide feet, get Clew, cause you can get any boot you want. Unlike Burton's that you have to get their boot.

@@BoardsBikesAndHikes It's not just you. I met a slim 5 foot girl once with size 7 that uses Burton stepins and she also complained about her boots being too tight. And I met a sales guy who works at a ski shop that said it's a known issue with Burton.
I watched this because I'm looking into trying the Clew. I tried the Nidecker supermatics and had too much difficulty stepping into them. I personal opinion is that they're better for people with boot size less than 11.5. I ran the burton step ons all last season and like them, but they're difficult in deep snow situations if you have to unstrap. One thing I wanted to mention is that I don't fell I have to do any twisting motion to get out of the step ons. I find them really easy to get out of.
I’ve wanted to try the nideckers just to be able to compare all 3. I’ve been loving the CLEW though. The deep snow I never got to test with the burtons but was definitely always a concern of “what if” which is why I like these because soon as it gets deep I just use the straps. Then once the powder days are over back to clipping in. I will say with the step ons the newer versions you don’t have to twist as much as the previous gen design. It’s a bit easier getting in/out since they redesigned the clips. I had a pair of each generation.

If you need a Burton part, they are happy to overnight them to you. All you have to do is call and tell them the part broke and make sure call early in the morning is easier to get through tell them apart broke and they’ll ship them right out.

I went with the burton photon which was one of the stuffer options(there is more flexible choices) and initially I thought it was too stiff but after I got used to it and broke them in some I actually loved them and preferred them over a softer boot. Definitely turned me onto stiffer boots from here on out for sure!
I have the burtons and love them. However I wear a leash with it, not because I think they will eject with a crash or blow off on the lift. I’m worried someone else on the lift will accidentally kick the release and bye bye board

That’s one good thing about the CLEW if someone hits the release but your weight isn’t on the board and on the heel, it won’t actually release.

Just my opinion - the step ons gave me a really horrible hot spot on my pinky toe side. I’m trying Clew this year to try different boots because with the Burton there wasn’t really other options

I had the photon wide because I heard if you got the wide this wasn’t an issue and I never had any problems. But I will say that’s definitely a huge plus to the CLEW Being able to use any boot. I’ve had issues with the pinky toe joint with snowboard boots and bike shoes since my arch collapses making my foot wider. Started running insoles with arch support and it’s been feeling a lot better with the same boots.
I have this exact problem as well with the photon step ons. Its fine for a day of riding but if you're going out for a full weeks worth you'll start to hurt after a few days.
How does the clicker x hb square with the clew and the step-on? I had the original clickers from the mid 90s and loved them. Sadly, i can't find any replacement boots nowadays.

Thanks for your interesting review ! I just own a pair of Supermatics and I'm very surprise how easy and tight it can be. I'm glad that I've been able to keep my boots too (Ride who doesn't work with Burton here)... But I never tried these two other sytems, I see that the Clew are the easyest to clip but then you have the keep the big strap on the feet all day, it doesn't look that practical... Also for information my Supermatics worked way better after 3 or 4 days as the big straps took the shape of my boots, before that it was not so easy to get in and I also could feel them pushing on the top on my feet... But I would love to have your opinion on the 3 kinds if you find a pair of the Nidecker : ) Ah and for the weight I wonder how much the step-on weighs with their boots compared to others with boots too given that elements in the binding are incorporated into the boot.

The clew straps were about the same way. They were never uncomfortable but definitely got more comfortable after a few days when they got more formed to the boot. I will say a lot of people think you have to leave the highback and strap on all day, I actually just made a whole video about it. I leave it on skating through the lift line or real short walks, but if I’m walking far I’ll just unstrap them like a regular binding. It goes on just like a regular ankle strap so it’s honestly not noticeable whether it’s on or off and super easy to take off😁hopefully eventually I can get a few laps on some supermatics 😁

@@BoardsBikesAndHikes the "extra" weight is likely pretty negligible. The step-on set ups are some of the lightest options you can get. I don't have the non step on photon boots, but i weighed my photon wide step ons and k2 mayasis wide boots and they were both 1.1kg, and my L step on bindings are lighter than my Union ultras, fwiw

What about walking in them?
Is it safe to do will you wear them out
So I only really walk on them in the snow around the lift lines. If I’m going much further than that, I’ll just unstrap like a traditional binding. They do have a rubber pad on the bottom to help prevent them from wearing down the actual plastic. I have a buddy that has walked around Teton village in them, and through the parking lots. It’s really personal preference 😁I would assume though a lot of heavy walking on concrete would over time where that rubber down so that’s why I just unstrap 😁
What is it like walking around with clue strapped your boot?

When I first came to the mountains I chose snowboard over skis because if the number of items to carry and keep track of. I don't want my bindings to be detachable like that so I'm going with Step On.
I think both are good options but it’ll come down a lot to personal preference 😁you honestly can’t go wrong either way

There seems to be this weird stigma of hate toward the clew bindings from longtime snowboarders.
This is the only balanced review I’ve seen.
Back in the late 90s before I took like two decades off of snowboarding, there was the same stigma toward any type of step in system. Now step in is OK just not the Clew style?
Honestly I don’t get it.
I bought a pair of supermatics last year and they are OK but not great.
Being able to use whatever boot you want is a huge bonus. Maybe I’m picky but I just don’t feel like any of these systems going to feel as perfect as a traditional binding…
@@jtuds I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that feedback. You are absolutely right. I don’t understand the weird stigma/hate on the clew. I think honestly just because it’s something different and among a certain group within the snowboard community it just became cool to hop on the troll bandwagon when the vast majority of these people hating I’ve never actually tried/ridden on them at all. Most people are very surprised when they are first able to try them by how seamless they can be. Again they may not be for everyone, everyone’s got different preferences but I’ve ran into quite a few people riding them the last few seasons and anyone I’ve seen running them on the mountain loves them just as much as I do. When I first started running Burton step ons several years back, that was the one that got all the hate, then once clew came out all the hate shifted from the burtons to the clew, and somehow the supermatics stayed out of the crossfire. I think just where it’s similar to the flow🤷🏻♂️
Ah nice! I would actually love to give the supermatics a go at some point just to see how they compare to these 2 options. I’ve just had such a positive experience with the clew I haven’t had a desire to switch.

I don’t have a video of it but I talked with a guy on a chairlift once that was ski patrol and once was in the comments of one of my older videos. The guy in the comments was talking about getting stuck in deep deep powder and his foot got hung up under part of a buried down tree and he wasn’t able to take his foot through the motion required to get out of the burtons. He said his buddy that was with him had to help him dig his foot out so he was able to climb out and free up his board. Then the guy on the chairlift mentioned if people had injury’s like a broken ankle or something along those lines. You’d still have to take your foot through the same motion to get it out of the binding so you could get to their foot. I said they needed like an emergency release lever of sorts that would kick the boot out, similar to a neck brace has like a safe option. Because your only other option would be to take the foot fully out of the boot, which would be more difficult with it still stuck in the binding. Which obviously if you have an injury you don’t want to have to jerk it around more than necessary. Again these are low possibilities of these happening but the fact that it can happen I figured made it worth mentioning 🙂

😎Great review, but i get the impression that you like the Clew bindings a lot more by the way you choose your words to decribe any positive points with regard to the Burton bindings. Positive Burton points are mostly followed by however, but.... Also Important to know that if you contact customer support and you are a team rider, you will ALLWAYS have very swift solution. I missed the part where you mention that you are a teamrider by the way. I heard of stories, thats a very shady way of decribing the safety of Burton bindings. I am not a Burton fan but, if you get in a big enough crash with the clews you WILL get hurt and it could be hard to get the to release. THERE IS NO WAY THE CLEWS ARE SAFER THAN THE BURTONS, if so please show us some real proof and not ' i heard stories of'.. Thank you.
Alright so this will be a lengthy response so bear with me but I’ll be fully open and transparent in addressing all of your points.
First and foremost I do just want to clarify this isn’t a sponsored or paid video, nobody asked me to make this. Yes I am currently a CLEW team rider but I wasn’t always and they’ve never told me what I can or can’t say(I also haven’t asked🤣)so this whole video is solely based on my honest experience with the bindings, this is a video that I have wanted to make for a while, I just waited a bit to do it so that I had plenty of time on both. I was also hoping to get the step ons in powder, but unfortunately that never happened either 🤣
So honestly, I loved my Burton step ons and I still think that they are a fantastic system. Had I not tried the CLEW I would 100% still be running them and I still don’t really have anything bad to say about them. I loved having no straps, I love how they rode, and I love how lightweight the bindings were. Honestly, I thought the Burtons were a perfect system, so when CLEW first reached out to me and asked if I wanted to test their bindings I figured I would test the bindings, compare and contrast the two, and that would sort of be the end of it. But after running the CLEW For a little while, I really like how the bindings rode, I like that they do fit any boot(the most comfortable snowboard boots I have ever used for the Travis Rice snowboard boot, which I had to sell when I switch to the step ons, hopefully one day I will have them again) I like the CLEW For me is a bit easier to get into, plus like I said, I do like having the option to use the strap if I find myself in a scenario where I do need straps. Again, I like both and I don’t think that there is a right or wrong answer. I think it will boil down to what each person is looking for specifically to get out of their bindings. For me that just happens to be the CLEW.
Now as for customer service, when I reached out to them, that was only my 3-4th day on the bindings so I hadn’t reached out to ask them about getting an affiliate link/promo code/ any of that stuff yet. I didn’t go about doing that until several months later. And I actually wasn’t even considered a team rider on the website till just last month. So I don’t think I got any special treatment at that point.
Now as far as the safety. I think maybe I should have elaborated a bit more on that. So there were 2 different people that I talked to about it. 1 guy was in comments of one of my step on videos. He said he was snowboarding deep powder trees and wound up getting stuck and got his foot caught under some underlying branches and wasn’t able to do the motion required to get out of the step ons and him and his buddy had to dig his foot out so he was able to do the release motions and get his foot out to hike out. The other guy was a ski patroller on a chairlift and he was talking about helping someone that had injured their leg(I can’t remember whether their leg or ankle was broken, it was one of the 2) but they had to remove the step on binding and the only way was still to take the leg through the required motion to get it to release. And I said it would be nice if there was some sort of emergency release for a situation like that. Both of these scenarios, although rare, the clew would be better simply for the fact that if you couldn’t for some reason use the regular release, you could still just undo the straps like a traditional binding. Giving you multiple ways to get out of the binding.
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes Thanks for the lenghty reply. I get it that when you started using your Clews (witch you did not have to pay for) you were not a team rider. But at the time you made this video you are. Thats very important. (Look at Loopop a youtuber who reviews synthesizers, he starts every video with a 'full disclosure'.) And if you would have mentioned that you really LOVED your Burton bindings it would have been honest. They ride great, and if i undertand you correctly BETTER than the Clew (if you appreciate reponse.) I get it the Clews are userfriendly. Thats a great selling point. But the Burtons have that to. Learning curve for stepping in is a non issue, 2 try's at home en your good to go. (And if you are as stoked as i am when buying new gear, you probably be 'boarding' a lot in your bedroom😄). If you compare the amount of bending required to release both bindings, it is negligible. Bending your knees 5 cm (2 inch) more takes no extra effort what so ever. If you want to be a decent boarder and able to control your snowboard on the slopes, you must be able to do that regardless of what kind of bindings you have. About your two elaborated situations with the Burton bindings i still think they are misplaced in this review becaue as you say yourself they are very specific and i consider them 'cherry picking'. If you would be truly transparent you could have come up with a situation where the Burton bindings would have been better of. If it is not your own experience you should have left them out of YOUR EXPERIENCE review. Last but not least: if you are a rider who wants to progress is snowboarding i wouldn't recommend a Clew or a Burton binding step in binding. Because your stuck with a very expensive 'not so' responsive binding. But i can't hold that against you because maybe that is not your goal.
Great points but I disagree about being a progressing rider with Burton. They do have a learning curve as they made the board more responsive than they normally are but as a low intermediate rider I feel more in control and progressed a lot with them.
I am not a big fan of needing to purchase a binding specific boot, Clew make much more sense seeing that most people use traditional bindings, I like the option of how you want to use the Clew is all up to you

Where does Nidecker rank among the them? What I like about the supermatic is that you can step out fully, no high back attached to your boot.
I haven’t actually tried the nidecker yet. I would like to just to see how it fits in. From what I have seen, and just based off of what people have said that I’ve talked to, my only gripe with it is, it does seem to get packed up with snow, more easily, and the straps aren’t quite like traditional straps, so they’re not as easy to use like these are, if you do find yourself in a situation where you need the straps. Honestly having the high back attached to your boot, you don’t notice in the lift line whatsoever, it’s really not bad at all
At some point, I would like to try them though, just to see where they slot in and how they stack up
I have them on one of my boards and as far as quick entry binding go they are my favorite. My only critique is you do sacrafice some lateral flex because of the large base plate. I haven't ridden the clews, but in talking to people who have ridden both they say the clews are infinitely worse in this regard and lack the responsiveness of the nideckers. I've also heard complaints of the dead spot being huge on the clews.
I'd also wait on the Clews until they've been out for awhile and have reviews from average joes and not just influncers. Not sure if you noticed, but suddenly everyone and their mom is posting about these bindings that are a mid tier at best. They are also insanely overpriced IMO.

While it is true I do have an affiliate link for the CLEWS I am just an average joe, weekend warrior(although I’d say now because of UA-cam I make some additional trips) but that being said I’m the one that asked CLEW for an affiliate link after initially reviewing them. I really enjoy how they ride and the performance I’ve gotten out of them. After a year and a half I’ve got no complaints🤷🏻♂️they’ve been out for several years now and each year have slightly tweaked or improved the design. They’ve been out since 2019 was when the first one released.
I brought my own clew to zermatt last week, and used it on a Powday. I practically used the straps in all my runs; the step-on function was useless:(

Here’s what I’ve learned about the CLEW after 2 years in them. On a powder day I just use the straps if it’s snowing all day or till the last part of the day once it’s tracked out. I can still get the first click typically in powder and have ridden like that many times and been fine but to feel extra secure I’ll use straps. Any other scenario I’ve never had an issue. So it’s perfect for most days, I’ll make a tiny sacrifice for powder 🙌🏻
Does the Burton boot weigh more since it has to hold you in?
I’ve never actually looked into the weight difference of the boot because it does have a few extra pieces on it. I’m sure it weights a bit more but I’m not sure how much 🤔now I’m intrigued
not enough to notice. my step on photons are the exact same weight as my k2 maysis (1.1kg/2.4lbs per boot). obviously not a direct apples to apples comparison, but they are both double boa and the photons even have the ankle strap

I personally find the Clew binding itself very good. The problem is that I don't like carrying around half the binding on my leg.
Unfortunately, the Burton binding is not usable for me. I ride with very stiff and hard snowboard boots. I've always felt that the boots are a bit too soft. Fast riding has always felt quite mushy to me.
In my opinion, the Nidecker binding is the best among the three. You don't need to buy an extra boot, and you don't have to carry around half the binding on your leg.
Ahhh I gotcha. The burton photons and ions are super stiff but also a super high dollar boot.
See I know a lot of people gripe or look down on CLEW for the highback aspect but it honestly doesn’t bother me, I don’t really notice them in the lift line and then if I’m walking, I just unstrap like I would’ve done with traditional bindings anyway🤷🏻♂️
But I haven’t tried the Nidecker so who knows. I definitely don’t think there’s one right answer for everybody, everybody’s gonna have their own personal preference. 😁
I have the experience using both clew and supermatic. Last year I got the clew binding used it for days. The main issue I had was about the ratchets weren’t secure both toe strap and ankle strap in place. After few runs , the straps came loose and almost left the highback behind. I need to retighten both straps every time before ride down the hill . I contacted clew, they told me there is a lock on ratchet to secure the strap but I didn’t find it. It just like a typical ratchet. I’m not sure if I got an older version binding. Anyways, they issued a refund for me this year. And also they were some minor issues I had, the hook on the highback get stuck at the base plate. I believe there is a learning curve to step in your highback in right angle to align the baseplate perfectly.
This year I bought the supermatic, I didn’t have a full testing of this binding with just one day of riding. However, this binding addressed the issues that I had with clew, they have a little lever to slap in fully lock the ratchets. With this feature of the binding, both toe strap and ankle strap stay in place during the full day of riding. This is the biggest pros I find on this supermatic so far compared to the clew binding. I will never worried about the possibility of losing the highback nowhere in the mountains.
For the price points, supermatic is way cheaper than clew binding. I got mine with one of the retailer in the states. I got the 20% off on their msrp $399 usd for my supermatic while I can only get the most 10%off on $499 for the clew with UA-camr promotion code. Clew only sell their binding through their website but you can find supermatic on retailers in America.

I think ur opinion there about having multiple parts is advantageous, more parts=more point of failure, amongts the top three step in system rn, step in is still ahead except on deep powder, simple by having a much much simplier design.
They’re both good options, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong choice. I prefer the CLEW but I think every rider has their own opinion. I like both but the CLEW ticks more boxes for me

if you get 12 laps you will get about 12 minutes in the whole day. What one thing we are not pointing out, is with the clew, you still have to buy a pair of boots. Is not that a pair of boots just appear that is no cost involved.

Have you ever actually tried them though? Anytime I’ve talked to other people also running them, they’ve all been happy. The only ones I see hating on them are people on the internet who all hate off of “here say” without actually testing them for a day. I’ve only talked to a few people on here that have used them that weren’t happy. But in person I haven’t met one yet. They work well, ride great and are comfortable over long and multiple days back to back
Angry tells it how he feels about it, but clews aren't really for people like angry. When you have 150+ days, you are going to have different concerns compared to someone who is a weekend warrior like the OP. When you have that many days, you have a legitimate concern that your equipment is going to fail you, so adding a bunch of extra failure points like the Clew does is an absolute no-no.
Johnathan Buckhouse and Snowboard Pro Camp are running them and they both get 100+ day seasons as well🤷🏻♂️ now me on the other hand I WISH I had that many days a season🤣🙏🏻one day haha

I'm thinking about getting myself a pair of clews. One thing that comes to my mind is skating...that part of the mounting system that goes under your heel, does it bother when you have to skate a bit on flats?
I guess that if you are taking a break at the resort and walk around, you can just unmount the straps like on a regular binding, so I guess is not going to be a problem to walk...
Nope. You don’t notice it skating at all. I leave the highback on my boot for all the skating around lift lines or if I’m walking from one lift to the other if it’s in snow and a short walk. But if I know I’m going to walk far, go to the bathroom, get food etc, I’ll just pop the straps like normal. Heck there were times we started walking and decided to go further and I’d just take the one strap off and pop the highback off my boot and put it back on the board. It’s a super easy system to use 😁
Don’t buy, as a former owner of CLEW, I have suspicions that this and many other reviews were paid for
Versatility section should be clumped in with the weight section. A plus on one side means a minus on the other. Also, your safety section didnt consider the fact you can remove the foot from the boot directly. No need to use the unlocking mechanism in the case of a severe injury.
I could’ve maybe condensed the categories a bit but I wanted to make sure I highlighted each section of the bindings. I still would’ve delivered the information the same regardless🙃and yes you could remove your foot from the boot but depending on the instance/injury it still would be easier to get the boot detached from the binding to be able to slide it out easier.
Again I like both and think both are great options. Which one you go with totally comes down to personal preference of what you’re looking for😁

I’m just now getting more into carving so I didn’t feel like my expertise was quite good enough to go really in depth. Both are quite stiff and responsive and I’ve seen some incredible carving done on both. I believe if you’re someone that leans the highback more aggressively, that the burton can lean a little further forward, but both from what I’ve seen perform about the same 🙂👍🏼

i use my burton step ons on my donek, I can't hold a candle to knapton but can carve deep enough that I get toe drag on commercial "wide" boards when i go for those deep toe trenches. They do really well, but if you like to ride with a lot of forward lean, that's one area that they are lacking, which does make heel side carves on a 30cm waist board a little quicker to fatigue on. I'm looking at picking up the genesis versions to help with that as mine are gen 1's

You got half a second delay when switching from heel side edge to toe side edge on the Burton. For high performance carving or deep slope turns, it matters a lot. It messes up the forms for beginners and they would never be able to learn how to turn a snowboard efficiently.
I know a lot of people talk about the play you have in the heel so I can definitely see that but I always felt like in the burtons I had a faster response time and much more responsive binding where I was directly attached 🤷🏻♂️

I would like to know about forward lean on CLEW. I do have a lot of forward lean on my Flows and Cartel. Would there be an issue on stepping in with CLEW if i max the forward lean option? Thanks in advance
So I run mine only about halfway leaned and have 0 issues. I have heard it can be a little trickier when you do have the lean, maxed out. But from the people I have talked to that run it that way they say you can get the first click no problem and then just do a little hop on your heel edge and you’ll get the second one fairly easy. And just to clarify, I have ridden with just the first click in deep deep powder, and that second click would engage itself as I was riding.
I have been getting more into carving though, so I have thought about maxing the lien out just to see how it feels

So I will say in deep deep powder I run the straps just like a tradional binding, it’s just easier, but any other conditions I used the step in/out method and it’s never given me any trouble
I feel like Burton has gone all in on the step on. There strap line up seems to lack compared to other company's. It just takes some of the fun out of mishmasing Board binding boots. And as good as the may be. No pro runs them in eny comp.
now I'm intrigued. i haven't looked at their traditional straps in awhile. I used to love their bindings and ran the malavitas for a few year. I'll have to look and see if anythings changed! haven't seen any pros run them in Comps but I've seen videos of them going much bigger in them than i ever would, same for the Clew and even Nideckers, so that's good enough for me😆
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes I use to run all Burton setup. These days i just think its to much of a commitment to one brand. with the step on. And not sow much that there lagging. More that other brands have gotten better. I say Jones/Now Rome/bataleon Union and Nitro all have better offerings in strap Bindings then Burton have. With a lot of them focusing on shock absorption and vibration dampening. The ease of use with step on is definitely top tier. Maybe no pro is running them in freestyle for now. but the response maybe good for boardercross. Just my own opinion. Not hating on burton 🙂🙂
True. I definitely can see that. I’ve always wanted to try Jones or Bataleon Bindings just because I’ve heard such phenomenal things about they way they do allow the board to flex. Vs you don’t here as much about burtons other than occasionally about the cartels

Both myself and my buddies that run the burtons are all over 180 and haven’t had any issues🤷🏻♂️. That being said I would like to try the nideckers to see where they fall in. The only issue I have with them is they’re heavier and the way the step on mechanism works from what I’ve seen, it binds up much easier in deep snow and the straps aren’t quite as easy as these which are tradional straps. But that’s me just watching reviews, I’d like to try them at some point

i've actually seen someone mod the burton's with a cable going through a tube bolted to the highback with a handle to pull the lever. It looks much more professional than I just described, and the handle they used is a style that does not look like it could catch on anything,which is one thing I don't like from the looks of the clew release is it looks like it's begging to snag on something, but that same thing would likely make it really easy to do what you mentioned.

Great review. Have a group of us that use Flow, Step Ons and Clew. Step on and Clew are better than Flow and in my opinion Clew are better than Step Ons but the Step On rider says they are best :)
I did have my high back fall off while on a lift but I think that was due to be showing off how they work to other people in the queue and then knocking the ratchet loose without noticing

Fugg get Nidecker Supermatics if you NEED something step on, but it shouldn’t take any competent snowboarder more than 2 seconds to strap in their back binding and you should be able to do it while moving. Clews are the worst bindings on the market

Spoken like someone who hasn’t tried them or ridden them. They’re insanely responsive and such a fun binding to ride. And you can literally pop off the lift click in and go. Such a fun feeling
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes correct, I have not ridden any of them. I’m completely comfortable using the straps while moving and don’t want the weight or performance penalty that inevitably comes with any sort of step-on binding. Clews are just clearly the worst of the bunch

I can’t help but assume their business model was to get influencers to ride their stuff to get people that don’t ride much/well to buy their stuff. These have to be worse bindings than any $150 pair from any established brand. All of these steps in are up-charging for people who think strapping in is a hassle. Just get good. Not even good, just get mediocre and learn some low speed balance. Influencing people to buy an inferior product for more money is immoral

I would like to try them, just to see how they compare. But just based off of what I have seen as far as how they function, it seems like they would be the easiest out of the bunch to get bound up in deep snow. And where their straps, don’t work quite like regular straps because of the locking mechanism on them it would be a pain to use the straps if you had to over and over as well. But I’d like to get them a go just to see where they stack up
@@BoardsBikesAndHikes I have the Supermatics, I also have size 9.5 boots and got the L versiono f the binding, which supports up to size 10.5 boots, honestly it's hard getting in, I feel that I have to loosen the heelstrap from my prefered tightness before I can step in, half the time I can't get my boot to fit, I've noticed it happens more on really cold days, maybe the cold stiffens the straps.
The fact that I can't get in the fast way every time and I still have to bend over kinda annoys me tbh, I bought them mainly because of a herniated disk in my back and to avoid bending over so much.
The locking of the straps I find I don't ever need because I haven't seen them loosen on me at all. But it's easy to unlock though, its basically the classic release button on every strap, but you just press it to lock out the ratchet, in rest it functions the same as any other relese, I guess maybe you have to pull a bit harder, but I didn't feel I had to put in way more force or anything.
There's also the problem that you have to push on the lever to unlock the mechanism but then you have to pull your leg which are complete opposite movements and because of this sometimes I actually find it hard to press the lever in uneven terrain and pull my leg afterward. Clew having a pull lever that matches with the motion you will do with your foot probably feels 10 times better.
Besides the above, they feel really good, I find them decently butterable as well, and the lack of absorbtion doesn't really matter unless you're hitting the big jumps.
Nice! Hopefully one day I can try a set just to properly compare all 3 of the top step in options. The clew are super easy and smooth to get in and out of and once I set the straps for the day I don’t have to touch them again(unless it’s a powder day) you do have to keep your weight on your heel to get them to release but other than that it’s smooth entry and exit everytime😁

I don’t think there’s anything more biased than somebody doing a product review who has done nothing but make fun of the entire step in binding side of the market for as long as I can remember. So is it really that much of a shocker that he didn’t like them.not to mention the fact that you have somebody doing a review giving no video evidence or photo evidence that he even ever actually tested these bindings other than sitting in a dark room shooting a review video in 480 P quality
