Trying Surströmming (world's stinkiest food), Mom Scared!!!

- Today I decided to try surströmming, a Swedish food which according to a famous Japanese study is the world’s stinkiest food although it’s actually illegal in Japan and is banned by several international airlines. It’s basically herring that has been allowed to ferment for months and my particular can is technically expired. Sorry mom for stinking up the patio & kitchen!!! #Shorts

Some tips from a swede:
1. Open it under water in a bucket
2. Probably not supposed to eat it after due date, but honestly it's not like anyone would know the difference
3. Most swedes wouldnt touch surströmming with a 6 feet stick. It's a northern tradition. Probably because they were starving at some point. Or as a bet that went out of control.
4. It doesn't taste as bad as it smells. But it smells like death so that bar is quite low.
5. You will burp the taste of death for at least 24h afterwards.
Swedes; if you can eat this without balking, you may enter Valhalla
Eat it with flatbread, potato, red onion, chive and sour cream!
Then it taste only awful instead of very awful.

@Lewis Kennedy Nonsense. If I had a penny for every time a fly has landed on me I would be rich. And I shower regularly.
@Lewis Kennedy That's happened to me too. And then when you scare them they fly a twirl and land in the exact same spot a second later. This is the silliest thing. It's not that uncommon to have a fly landing on your phone.

You’re not supposed to eat it by itself silly. 😂😭
That expiration date doesn't worry me as much as the bloated can and all that pressure within it (0.o)
The can is specially designed so that it can expand without bursting.
@@vonnikon bloated cans can be a red flag for possible food poisoning.
@@mickeymauricio6772 sure, but not these cans. They are supposed to be like that.
@@vonnikon yeah, i don't trust it ! Had food poisoning once and that's all it took... i clearly have issue now .
When all you have is millet, reindeer, and fish to eat during Swedish winters in 1060 AD, you gotta have some variety.
First of all, Millet is from _Africa,_ no way they could ever produce that in Sweden.
Secondly, reindeer is the best tasting meat I have every tried in my life.
And thirdly 1060 ad was in the warm period in Scandinavia, where they grew grapes to make wine in Sweden. While this dish originated in the 16th century which was - contrary to 1060 - a uniquely cold period in Northern Europe, where the population shrank, the Thamse froze solid every winter and the Scandinavian settlements in Greenland died off because of the climate.
[edit:] oh and forth, the herring is caught in spring and consumed during summer. Not something they did to have food for the winter.

Thank you for trying surströmming. I grew up around it every year so I get intense evil laugh of satisfaction seeing people experience the smell for the first time. 😂
I can’t wait to see a second attempt - eaten the recommended way - and from a product that hasn’t expired and bloated the can (beware expiry foods man!)
no no no, you don't get it. The bloating is expected for this food. :D
it is expired, thats also why it smells so bad
@@shyuu7499 it smells bad even not expired but ok 😂
@@shyuu7499 Um. no Surströmming is fermented and it ALWAYS smells that bad. I've been told by several Swedes that you can't tell the difference between Surströmming that has expired and that has not.
@@Frankie2012channel Probs why it didn't matter that it was slightly expired! Either they're not that different, or maybe the fermenting process doesn't care how old something is?
Wash it down with some durian fruit. Lol
Oh yuck!! Port o potty in a shell, it's so gross, and some people absolutely love it... I tried it once, I held my nose and it tasted like a bunch of rotten onions and my kitchen stunk for days! @@Totalchaos0228 i believe you're not asian. Its actually pretty good. The smell does stink, but the flesh is really creamy.
My friend who has less taste receptors on her tongue LOVES durian. To me, a super taster, it tastes like a mouthful of natural gas. There was a hint of milky mango, for a second.
The politest way I could describe it is as garlic flavoured bubblegum.

Xiaomanyc: *eats stinky food*
Xiaomanyc: hOH hO
I'm not saying surströmming is stinky but the first time we had it when I was a kid, I was wondering if one of the neighbors had been dead for months, and they just discovered it, and were venting the apartment to get rid of the smell.
The smell really lingers, and it will get into everything. I was living in an apartment building, ate some surströmming, and ended up throwing what I couldn't finish down the garbage shoot. I lived on a high floor. When I got home from work, I could smell it in the hallway. It was the only time during my many years of living there that they sprayed an air freshener. I could only imagine how bad it smelled on the low floors.

... my exact thought as well. Hopefully Xiaomanyc won’t end up needing a ventilator. Hospitals are a bit busy at the moment...
Not with surströmming. It's fermenting, just like you have with beer or mead. The gasses are carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, while propionic acid, butyric acid, and acetic acid round out the smell.

You arent supposed to just eat it straight from the can!! They still have their guts and everything, you're supposed to take one out and get just the filets and toss it in something like a big pita wrap with potatoes and other fixings. Still a different taste but its alot better like that, if you dig tuna salad and other stanky seafood things you'd enjoy it.

For future reference. If the can is bulging outward don't eat it. The food inside is likely compromised. The way it sprayed after opening is an example. Gases have built up in the can over time probably from the food decaying. Dented inward can be fine as long as it's not a crease in the can or a huge one, but don't eat from any bulging cans.
This is a fermented fish, there's nothing wrong with the bulge
Cans of surströmming are supposed to bulge. The fermentation continues in the can. It is canned in the winter and spring, but not released for sale until August each year. When the full flavor has developed.
I love how you make videos about going out and talking and then make these random videos
Hahahaha! I am swede! I refuse to test it myself! Its not popular in Sweden, i would say its just the older generations that eats it. I have some friends who tried it and their reaction was the same as yours! So yeah haha, it is not popular in Sweden but the reactions is sure fun as hell!

Im from Sweden🇸🇪🇸🇪
How is this typically eaten? Does it get paired with something or just straight up?
R Roman Its depending on how you like it, but when I have eaten it, i have eaten it with bread or potatoes, and not just like it is😂
@@ylvastrand2164 Aye, that's generally how it's traditionally eaten, like another person noted earlier, it's supposed to first be opened while submerged in water so it doesn't stink up the place, then a very small piece eaten on a piece of buttered bread with sliced cooked potatoes and onions.
Hahahah 😂 Skrattar så jag gråter. (laughing so hard i am crying)
The Hanseatic League in Northern Europe was probably the most significant precursor of European unification since the Roman Empire. It worked remarkably well as a commercial dynamo which forced the participating cities to improve in logistics; it introduced labor unions and had a significant effect in what later would be known as industrialization both as an example and a warning example. The most significant trade item at the time was herring, and therefore preserving it was very important. One of the more successful preservation methods was preserving fish by fermenting it, which by no means was an original Swedish invention, but I suppose the Swedes kept doing it for longer than most other countries, which is why we now know this atrocity by the name of Surströmming.
It's absolutely exaggerated
It smells like fart and tastes very salty, but at the end its not so crazy to eat..
Originally with bread, fresh cheese, potato, and tomato
Was ok
Greetings from Sweden, congratulations for eating our best dish, try eating it with bread, potatoes, and butter, Because if you eat it without any ingredients you won't like it too much, since you're not familiar with that food.

In my childhood we used to gather in your church youth group on saturday nights - in part for religuous activity but also to hang out and play ping pong and such. Once, one of the kids had brought a jar of surströmming which he dared the rest of us to try. Being 11-15 years old we didn't think that far ahead and opened it indoors. The smell was still there the morning after for the service.
