Surströmming is a Swedish delicacy which roughly translates to 'sour herring' and is made by fermenting Baltic sea herring in a can for over 6 months. The smell is infamous for being one of the worst smells in the world. According to a Japanese study, a newly opened can of surströmming has one of the most putrid food aromas in the world.

This cold open was better than any movie or TV show I've ever seen. The shot, the sounds of gagging, the genuine fight-or-flight response that got triggered in all of them by the smell. The fade in of the sad music and the minimalist title screen.
I'm crying.
When I was a kid my mother would buy limburger cheese from a local German deli that imported the stuff. My siblings and I would panic and run for the doors whenever she took it from the grocery bag. I'm pretty sure we looked very much like the Facts gang in this video.

Wonderful and fully realistic! I am Swedish, but my reaction is the same as yours. Unfortunately, my origin is from the part of the country where surströmming is considered a delicacy. So once a year I have to go through this very process.

At my request, a friend arranged for me to eat Surströmming on one of my last weekends of my year studying in Sweden. She advised me that it was illegal to open a can of it with any of the windows open so we closed them all. We sat across from each other at a small wooden kitchen table and she opened the can in front of us. The smell hit me like a physical force, like a hot draft in my face making me go all red and instantly raising my heart rate. For a minute I thought I wasn't going to be able to handle it. She kept asking if I was okay. The smell was not just foul, but it was all encompassing, demanding that the brain focus on nothing but it. My head pulsed and I felt a bit faint. We decided to take it slowly and wait till the smell had sort of equalized. 20 minutes later I was a bit more calm, though none of the effects had subsided. My friend put a chunk of the fish ("We got lucky - this one was pregnant!") on a sort of soft flatbread along with some onion slices and handed it to me. I folded it over and steeled myself to take the first bite. Goddamn, it was actually delicious.
I think you're supposed to open it in a basin of water. That dilutes the flavour and keeps the smell... under control.
@@dkix89 agreed, the reason people think it smells horrible is cause the brine gets aerosolized and you breath it in.
Swede here, the smell is bad, like really bad, taste is... I wouldn't call it delicious, but not bad either. It has that funky umami thing going that tends to enhance and give body to other things. Similar to Thai fish sauce, which smells bad but makes things taste good when added. The tunnbröd and onion "surströmmingsklämma" is a classic. I think some slices of cooled off boild new potato and a little dollop of sour cream makes it better, but that might be heretical. As a Swede, I'm sorry, but I think the same fish (Baltic Herring) can be put to much better use, like pickled, brined, smoked, fried or... you name it. :)
@@doctormixup5388 honestly you can mitigate the smell a lot by opening it in water as it stops the aerolization of the brine.
One of the smelly substances: ethanethiol is a common ingredient in stink bombs, and it has that effect.
I watched it for the 10th time or so, after having not seen it for a year or two and I laughed tears again. This video is one of the greatest creations on the internet.

I'm pretty sure Swedish people usually eat this outside, and even in Sweden it's considered an... acquired taste, to say the least. It's not like Swedes are having Netflix and chill and throwing back surströmming as if it's cheese and crackers.

/norwegian that has been in close encounter with surströmning twice. -The second time wasn't easier. I was lacking that 'surprise'-moment. Holy saint of lost kittens, I'd rather sleep in a bag full of snakes, than eating that garbage.
i actually do eat it multiple times a year its not as bad as it seems if you do it the right way there are many ways to do it traditionally it will be on flat bread with onions and sour cream but you can do so many things with it. also never open the can inside best is to take a bucket of water and open the can outside under the water it eliminates most of the smell.

Several years ago a guy kicked in the windshield on my boat when he was drunk, a few days later i was in Sweden to do some shopping, I found Surströmming and bought 2 boxes. I opened both of them and threw them inside his big boat.. In the summer. He never used that boat again, and he was not able to sell it either. It was a good day ( for me )

This is popular to maybe 15% of us in Sweden. Most of us just hate it and never eat it. It´s mostly popular in the northen region of our country. They usually consume surströmming after the third Thursday of August, labeled as "Surströmming day", through early September.

Surstromming is not meant to be eaten indoors and by itself. Usually you eat it with boiled potato and some onion. OUTDOORS. They even have a law that prohibits eating Surstromming in apartment blocks or the likes.

It was a way to store herring in the off season, back when it was a matter of starving or not starving.
KikumiChan yeah but just like ANY other thing they try, they werent requested to try a DISH, its one specific ingredient. So just the fish. It makes sense. They know what they're doing.
The story goes that some people were salting fish to store for the winter, but only had half the salt needed - with predictable results (half-rotted fish). They then offloaded it on some travelers, who came back the next year asking if they had any more of that lovely fish.
Being somebody who lives in the mountains where it snows so bad in the winter, it sometimes gets to the point where it can take a week before you can make to the end of your driveway. That being said as someone who's never tried it I still have the common sense to eat it in a room with the door closed if you can't get outside.
As for the location they filmed the video they film where their told, that's part of the job, even doing nasty stuff, I would love to have 🤘🏻

I'm a swede and I actually have never eaten it. Alot of my friends and family hasn't either. I think it was more popular back in the days then it is now. Alot of landlords has actually forbidden this in rental appartments because the stench stays for a while.

It took my entire childhood to get used to the smell of surströmming and I was about 27 before I actually liked the taste of it. But if you're from the north of Sweden like me those annual summer dinners eating surströmming on flatbread with red onions, potatoes and sour cream, it's like a holiday or a garden party. Kinda our version of Thanksgiving where friends and family all join together around the table.
