Me too! I have graduated high school over 16 months ago and I have been doing nothing whatsoever since, my mental health has deteriorated more than ever and I know it’s at least partially my fault/responsibility, but the never ending depressive episodes make it impossible for me to function.
It’s a very productive day if I manage to clean my room a bit.
I’m 20 now and I’m so afraid I’m gonna be at the same place in life this man is when I’m 27, and realistically, it’s more than likely to happen. Seven more years isn’t that much time, once you’re stuck in the darkness it gets increasingly difficult to get out. I empathise with this man, he must be in so much pain.
A lot of people don’t realize that severe and chronic mental illnesses often do make you a prisoner in your own life, and can prevent you from functioning just as much as visible illnesses.
I’m glad he’s getting help. He needs it and deserves it.

Reading your message broke my heart. You are deserving and worthy of help too, stranger on the internet... I’ve been in a similar state myself. Medication helped me, but it’s not for everyone. Getting outside helps too. It seems daunting to get out of bed, figure out how to be “decent” to try to blend in with the world. But it doesn’t matter as much as it seems because it’s really just about you. I’d sit in my yard in my pajamas some days lol. Those would be slightly better days for me. I know what it’s like to be stuck in misery, and feel so ashamed about it that it just makes it worse. Any small thing to break the cycle helps. I’m sure you’ve heard it all before, I’m sorry. I went through something similar after high school, and it’s been a few years now, but I can only imagine how it would have been during a pandemic. My heart and prayers go out to you, my dear. You will be on my mind. I hope something makes you smile today.

Brian Vent in the 1800 he would be locked away for being ‘crazy’ or he would be homeless. How does that help anyone? Doesn’t improve his life and only drains community resources. Now if he was treated for his issues, given a proper diagnosis and therapy, he would be able to contribute and be a functional member of society. That is what modern mental health care is about, improving the quality of the lives of those who need additional support so society as a whole can benefit from it.

@@brianvent3043 You sound like my mom. "Your life is okay so you're not depressed. There are people worse off than you. Only people touched in the head have mental illness."
I never got the help I needed. Ever. Even when I wrote a suicide note and ran away, she STILL didn't think something was wrong and I "just wanted attention." and "being a dramatic teenager."
Being flippant about someone who has mental illness is probably one of the worse thing you can do to them. There will always be people worse off than you and sure things were worse back in the 1800s but that does not mean you should invalidate someone's mental illness that they cannot help. Also hate to break this to you but mental illness and depression was around back then too. You're not helping anyone.

If you want the kid to take the advice seriously at the end, you have to get him to acknowledge that he's not completely powerless in this situation. All the therapy in the world can't help him if he's not willing to help himself. It’s called depression. Stop talking about what he used to be like. Depression takes that all of that away from you. And Dr. Phil come on... you should know better. He’s not lazy... people don’t not shower because they’re lazy... they neglect themselves because the effort it takes to upkeep with your appearance isn’t even obtainable when you’re that depressed. Show him ways he can motivate himself, get him on a track where his achievements boost his confidence in himself, don’t tear him down on national television and make his parents look like they’re enabling him to live this way. It’s much more deeper than that and you should be ashamed to pick this guy apart. I’ve been there. There wasn’t a single thing you could say to me to make me any more “motivated.” I literally wanted to stick a gun in my mouth. He needs some serious therapy and SSRIs

I have dealt with anxiety and depression and I understand what Dr. Phil is saying. It very much so helps to face those fears every day. It used to terrify me to approach tables as a restaurant server, but I kept doing it. I have also failed at many simple jobs due to a traumatic brain injury, but even if I was crying my way through it I forced myself to stay at the job and keep trying. Everyone’s issues and situations are different, but I do know that sometimes not forcing yourself to do really difficult things makes everything sooo much worse. It slowly changed the course of my life to repeatedly make the decision to keep pushing through and trying no matter how many times I failed. I now use those experiences and pull on what it took to get through them with a variety of difficult situations that I face in life. It’s important to prove to yourself what you’re capable of.

And not to mention racism, sexism, you know feeling like you are fighting these huge battles all alone all the time can be hard and exhausting on top of having to survive in a super fast pace world that sees everything and everyone around them as nothing more than something to exploit. You just don’t want to get up from your bed because sleeping is a form of escaping the reality of the life you have to face, which is causing you depression. I graduated high school but still wanted to get more credits, but my high school denied me saying I wasn’t capable of doing higher academics, which got me very frustrated, brought down my self-esteem and made me feel completely dumb and worthless. I tried for 2 years to resume classes to get more credits until I found an open door.

“Jake has such a bizarre life. He’s getting up at 6pm &+ going to sleep at 6am.” That’s a sign of depression right there, either sleeping too little, or too much, &+ at odd hours.
I had severe depression from 2019-2020 I was just like jake (expect the hygiene part, I still showered, brushed my teeth, granted I did stay in my pjs all day if I could, but I washed my clothes.) just like him tho I felt more comfortable in my bed. I isolated myself, I ignored people’s calls and texts, I was also in a “terrible funk” as jake called it.
Today I have anxiety more than depression. I still have depression, there’s a lot of days where I have to push myself to stay motivated, but I no longer feel like a burden or feel like I don’t belong. I’ve started talking to my friends and family more, and it really helps. Keeping it inside doesn’t help, it’s embarrassing (I get it) but it’s SO much better to talk about it. You won’t always find the right person at first so keep talking to people and someone will understand, someone will be there to help you, keep trying, try not to give up. 👏🏼😁😋😎

This is my little brother and older sister... they are 24 and 31, and have never lived independently (except my older sister when my parents paid for an apartment/university for 4 years... she left the apartment and moved back home after 8 months).
My brother has his gf and baby living in the basement of my parents house with him.
They kicked me out when I was 15, and I have never moved back home. They let me be homeless for 2.5 years on the streets, but I made it on my own and still do.
I don't understand why they were so keen to not ever help me, but enable my siblings to the point where they do not know how to be adults at all.
The sad part is my parents HATE their life. They resent their kids. But they won't kick them out and my siblings will never leave on their own.

He has a lot of potential. Jake, you’ll be fine. And it’s not too late and you aren’t old!

    start with the small things
    start with smaller goals
promiss yourself you'll fix your room, go out more, take a jog in the weekends, start small and grow bigger and you'll climb back up

I feel bad for him actually... I know what it feels like. He needs counseling. His mental health comes first. He can't just work, his mind gotta be in the right place
