Remember the TNG episode "The Wounded" about O'Brien's PTSD fighting during the Cardassian War? He had to talk down his former Captain, Maxwell, from reigniting the conflict. "It's not you I hate, Cardassian..."

The final scene is one of my favourite in all of Star Trek. Because we see all these kids from different species living peacefully and learning together, including a Borg, and it shows that no matter what happens, in the future the Federation's ideals have survived. And that something our characters did will still be remembered, and still matter. I feel like however the show ends, this scene already gave us the best possible ending. Plus, the Chief finally gets his due!

So O'Brien was definitely a soldier before the events of TNG. He fought in the war against the Cardassians, and holds a particularly deep prejudice against them. They happen to delve just a little deeper into that background in DS9. Not to say there haven't been retcons in the franchise, but yeah, there was only one episode in which O'Brien's background was talked about, which is probably why it's easy to forget.

This episode should be shown to all school administrators. Reason being, no buffer time contributes to teacher burn out. Administration basically acts like the captain in this episode, trying to micromanage teachers, giving them too many tasks to do (besides teaching) and getting mad when tired and overworked teachers make mistakes. This episode encapsulates a major contributing factor to teachers getting frustrated and leaving.

'Buffer time' is one of those things controlling bosses never get. Really.
They have long lunches ( which help workers, by the boss' absence ), meetings, etc. ( which do not ), mandatory planned time and motion procedures ( which do not ) but it all cuts into the worker's ability to get things done.
Once had a mini-boss tell me to do two things at once, as if it was some great revelation: basically set something up, and do something else when that was happening. Wow, how ordinary.
I told him I routinely did up to three-four things at once, and my record was five.
This was shortly before I left, as his reaction was to prohibit me from doing almost everything.

Really can't wait for you to get to season finale. And yes, it's pretty much as you said: every comedy uses first season to find its pacing, and the correct balance between jokes and plot. LD starts by packing jokes over jokes, with apparently no real need for a plot. When characters begin to be fully established in people's mind, both of them (people and characters) feel the need for a good story, even if narrated in comedy tones. And that's what happens in LD as well.

    • @ChibiHoshiDragon
      @ChibiHoshiDragon 27 днів тому

I think the real reason people call them "children's shows", especially when they emphasize the teen or adult should "grow out of", is because they are really family/kid-friendly shows that should be watched with adults but we have become a society that uses tv shows as a babysitter.
When one realizes that the babysitter is still in the lives of their teen who is responsible enough to care for themselves and doesn’t need a babysitter, the parents are confronted with the reality that the child was left alone and being entertained like an adult.
They have to face the reality that they didn’t babysit the child they distracted them.
To try and preserve the idea that they "gave their child a childhood" and didn’t neglect the child, they try to create a wedge to those things they associate with this idea of non-neglectful childhood; instead of the reality that they neglected and treated their child like an adult/adolescent way too early.

Oh, you missed O'Brien's history with the Cardassians in TNG. It comes up in s4e12 (The Wounded), which establishes he was enlisted crew on the USS Rutledge during the Cardassian War.
Granted, there's a lot of inconsistency with O'Brien anyway, mostly to do with his rank: in his first appearance (Encounter at Farpoint) he's dressed in Command division red, with an ensign's pip; in his second (Lonely Among Us), he's in Ops/Security gold and has no rank insignia (suggesting he's a plain old crewman); then from The Child (s2e01) through until Realm of Fear (s6e02) he's dressed in Ops gold wearing a lieutenant's pips. This gets particularly weird as he's actually referred to as a lieutenant until Family (s4e02), where he's explicitly called a Chief Petty Officer by Sergey Rozhenko. In Realm of Fear, he starts wearing a single hollow pip, which continues until season 4 of DS9, when he finally switches to the rectangular rank insignia (with three chevrons and two dots) of a Senior Chief Petty Officer).

THANKS for this!!!! Recency bias?--I *love* S3 and S4 so I am surprised at how much I like these early episodes--at least through you!!!
I felt the first two seasons tried too hard to be a "Family Guy" comedy. The latter two seasons transformed into an action show that just so *happened* to be funny.

Remember this is not just about characters from the lower decks, but the entire ship is a lower class of ship, unlike the Enterprise. Even Captain Freeman is a grunt, of sorts.

Okay, so someone who's good at props need to make the following. A rubber lead pipe for Paula to bend. A styrofoam picnic table painted to look like wood for Paula to throw. A tinfoil car for Paula to crush. Then Kat follows her around as she demonstrates her mega-strength, and goes "Pippi, no!! Pippi noooo!!". 😉😁😆

Love your reactions to the Treks. Lower Decks is my 2nd favorite Trek. I’m really hoping you guys react to the Strange New Worlds crossover Episode Those Old Scientists. It is fantastic and you don’t really need to have watched that show to enjoy it.

  • @j.rileyindependentproductions

How about "Gallifrey Gals Get Decked Out" or "Gallifrey Gals Get Boimlered"? However, I do like "Gallifrey Gals Get Buffer Time"... especially for the (no longer really relevant - which is so Trek) in-joke of buffering digital media.
As I am not a Red Dwarf fan (sorry), I haven't watched your reactions to see if you've mentioned it... but, did you two hear that they are making new episodes of that series?!
NON-SPOILER - As for O'Brien, Paula is both right and wrong when it comes to the retcon... The whole first introduction of the Cardassians in TNG hard established that O'Brien was a tactical officer on the Ruttledge who killed his first person by accident in battle (he'd been using stun but was thrown a phaser on the highest setting). Yet we don't hear about any of his time after that until he joined the Enterprise at its launch until DS9. So, they retconned some of what had been softly "implied" during that between time.
