I was waiting for this hand to come out of the couch with windchimes.
@Jonathan Burns sure but it could have been "with magic"
Or cheese
@Jonathan Burns appears we have a fake
Missed opportunity there haha
Me too, and I'm kinda sad that he didn't.
This is one of those tricks that even if you understand exactly how it is done you still love every moment of it.
What tricks doesn't this apply to? I think knowing how it's done usually just genuinely makes it a lot more admirable.
Yeah I totally figured it out on second viewing esp after Penn mentioned double. But this guy should have his own show!
Not for sure, but I think I suspect how he did it. Secret compartment in back of loveseat so he basically rolls thru out the back easily when couch is first closed and he is concealed, then he slips his hand out from a secret sleeve in the "straightjacket" while still having hands and arms behind back, to throw the cereal, keys, etc... As soon as the slow hand pulls in and the "EMT" comes out, he simply ducks behind the cardboard box barricade used as stage dressing and runs to the left behind stage to pop out from boxes on the right. Anywhere near close?
@@therealhumanguineapig7537 SPOILER... you are right. at 4:13 you can see the boxes are not stacked behind the couch. but have a hole-
There are some tricks where it's like, I already know what you did and now you're just waving your hands around.
Burns does performances where you could help him set it up and it's still funny to see him do it
Never change, Jonathan, Never, EVER change. you're a gem.
Indeed
🙌 Agreed!
So wonderful!
Okay, I really want to know how he did it. Escaping from a couch is exactly the struggle I have almost every day.
Penn gave it away when he said double action. Which most likely means that there was a double behind the couch from the start. hijm getting to the other side of the room tho i have no clue. probably a secret passage somewhere
@@shush665 could be the boxes that form the background but still it would take a lot of practice and skill to pull it off
A strong urge to urinate may have helped.
@@shush665 Yeah I can see everything else, but apparently you gotta reach the reappearing side moving on plain sight, but there might be something that was cut off on edit.
Also there is something about the rules that I am not sure about, for me Alyson must have seen him escaping the couch inmediately, and maybe also the double behind.
There is one other option though, and that is that he is behind the couch all the time and he has a real twin
I think that “double action” was referring to the fact that the couch is most likely a cloning machine.
The Jonathan that appears from the side stage is a clone, and, the old Jonathan gets dropped behind the couch into a water tank to drown.
There was a trick like this in The Prestige. That’s how the method was explained in the movie.
You're the only magician whose routines I watch more than once, not to try and figure it out, but for the enjoyment of the experience. You're an entertaining dude.
absolutely love the way you look at it . as a magician I don't want to know about new things because I want the pleasure of seeing magic the way and audience member sees it which is often quite hard when you do it for a living although now I'm retired
How DO you get out of a straight jacket?
Lol your humor is spot-on.
What does that mean? I don't get it :/
This is great and all, but there is a severe lack of cheese.
I felt it was gouda-nuff without it.
I thought he was brie-lliant
Too bad you don't have a cheddar opinion of him!
Legend has it that until today, he's still in that straight jacket.
Good. I wish he's stay hiding in the basement as well. What a pathetic "performer".
At 4:42, Allison magically appears on a pillow. Great effect!
That wasn't there before
Shows are longer live and edited for TV, I figure
@@FreeIX that was the actual trick…Penn & Teller didn’t even know they were fooled
When interview segment is so heavily edited, that means that Pen and Teller were discussing how the trick was done much longer than usual
"I do have a question for you: how do you get out of a straitjacket..." WHILE finding that remote, keys... and the everyday cereals along the way? :-D
This was hilarious! The best!
*strait jacket
@@Creabsley thanks! I really appreciate that 👌. It's amazing how this misspelled word already has been accepted in some dictionaries
(even though "straitjacket" seems to be the correct form).
We are always learning!
Look at when he appears from the paper boxes. He had arms that he could add on the jacket
@@life1alert796 I'm sure he found the keys, the missing cereals and the remote, all with that added arms (LOL)
@@Creabsley *It's straightjacket. Trust me, I've actually handled and used real ones in real mental health situations. Yes, I'm old, but I spell from experience. ;)
I love hearing Penn explain how the trick was done, without completely giving it away. He gets very creative.
Also, this was a great bit! 😎
I didn't quite understand the code.
Was it the mention of 'double-effect' perhaps implying a 2nd person in the couch, and 'run-around' implying he had to flee backstage or something?
@@Moley1Moleo Penn code is not required. It's a classic of all escapes. In addition, the producers forgot to remove one moment that occupied the scene from a different perspective - the magician simply left his knees through a hole after one box removed. If Alyson saw it, she was probably assigned to assist.
@@Moley1Moleo that's exactly what it means. Double in couch for the hand.
The best part for me is his hand coming through the couch with the items, because to do that it means he really DID escape from the straight jacket and then put it back on for the final reveal and that cracks me up.
If that was his hand.
Or it was just someone else’s hand
It was a double. That's one of the code words. He had a double in the couch make the hand gestures while he ran around back to put on the fake arms.
You can see the double crawl behind the couch at 3:36
@@Aoskar95 no you can’t?
I would actually pay to see this guy. Pure entertainment.
Alison must have literally come straight from the hairdresser's
Backstage
The show has a hairdresser, all shows do
No worries, mate. Some of us still appreciate a good double entendre.
4:13 you can see the hole under the boxes behind the couch xD
lol, they held the shot there for several seconds too, made it plain as day. wonder if he pissed off the editor or producer or something
3:31 where he is rolling out from couch..
@@aprojoci good catch, and at 3:37, right after the camera cuts, you can see his shadow moving behind the left side of the couch. shame, it's not the worst trick otherwise, it just works better as a comedy act than a magic trick. but it makes me wonder how many other contestants on the show got completely screwed by the camera crew/editors lol
and perhaps the straight jacket isn't quite restraining his actual arms as it appears
Run around I guess was Penns code word here? That was my guess on the second watch.
Man, your delivery on " how do you get OUT of a straight jacket" is brilliant. Tom Hanks would need 50 takes to do it that well
I love your act. I don't care how simple or complex the trick is, your showmanship is fantastic.
Really like his personality when he is on stage.
Yeah, dude craps confidence
Easily one of my favorite personalities in magic. Im with Penn on this, the not escaping the straight jacket is hilarious.
I want this man again and again to be on the show. Genius guy
I am quite happy to know that there are still real comedians in the world.
Yeah, but sadly that's not shown here in this video.
I want him to fool so bad just cause he’s so freaking entertaining!!!! I’d def pay money to see this live 😂😂😂
Gangly and weird man: You might not realise this, but I was a gangly and weird kid.
That's the joke.
😶
This was an amazing performance. Entertaining all the way through, and a very nice surprise ending. Just charming and awesome!
I really hope after Covid this guy gets his own show in Vegas. I'd love to see him live!
He definitly deserves to live.
Not Vegas, a weekly TV show!
Holy shit didn’t know this stuff was still going on. Awesome, loved how entertained P&T looked while you were performing! Keep it up
Yeah, nice to see a fresh upload
You gotta be one of the Funniest most Original Magicians out there!!!! This made me so happy😂BRILLIANT!!!
This guy is a national treasure. Such genuinely contagious joy! Hope you’re getting the recognition in your career that you so well deserve 👍🏼
For me the funniest magician in all Fool-us-seasons....👏👏👏👏
Great trick and always a fantastic humoristic showman! Huge fan!
This act, and this magician is like Piff the magic dragon-so god damn entertaining and rewatchable that the fooling part literally doesn’t matter. He won without needing to win anything.
Glad Penn invited you back. Next time I'm sure you'll have them rolling on the floor laughing.
This was really creative and absolutely hilarious! More please
This was incredibly hilarious, what a performance from start to finish, I was laughing my butt off. "I'm an 11 by 14. You're welcome America."
2:50 that joke followed by Penn’s laugh is so wonderful, like he’s saying “it’s funny cause it’s True!”
I didn't get that joke. What did he mean by that?
@@aiman9365I’m assuming that magic isn’t seen as “cool” when growing up, so a lot of magicians had a rough or awkward childhood due to being obsessed with something “uncool”. Penn laughed extra hard at that joke, so I’m thinking he might have related to it more than other jokes 👍🏽
@@SirValiantIII Oh... I see
I think the best part about your acts is very unique.
With most magicians we're constantly trying to see behind the magic, with you, as an audience member, it truly feels more like a comedy routine than just magic, and it enhances both sides.
That was a lot of fun, thanks Jonathan!
I do not care if this guy ever fools anyone with his actual magic, I want to see him perform and get rich and famous because he is rip roaring hilarious in every appearance.
Never ever change man.. You are the grace this world needs.
You are an absolute riot whenever you perform. Equal parts comedic genius and magician. Love you whenever you perform.
This guy’s improvisation is fantastic. Also, that participation trophy was so great xD
One of the side camera angles did this trick no justice, it showed how cleverly the boxes at the back had been organised...
so glad you share this with us! real funny!!
Laughed so loud, didn't think you could top your cheese trick. Hope to see more, thank you for the laughs
I found three of your friends in my sofa-bed. Only that they started handcuffed and emerge in straitjackets. Great act.
We've been looking for those guys! Just pop them in a mailbox and they'll be sent back to me.
Penn gotta be the most gracious show host. Absolutely delightful to hear him laud other magicians.
As a father of an 11yr old, I felt those Cheerios in the couch.
The genuine joy Teller gets from Burns is so wholesome 🥹😊
FIRST!
So funny.
Very good.
Hope you get a shout out!
😆😆😆
great job, can't wait to see your next "cheesy" act.
Top 5 act if not#1. Thx sir
Love it. One of the best if not the best on PT ever. Great comedy, great showmanship, this is what its all about.
This was a fantastic act and your humor is perfect. Great job with this creative take on those ridiculously dangerous acts.
He’s back! I love you Jonathan!!!
What a great idea, Jonathan. I loved it! By the way, 62 people are still stuck in the couch.
I have no idea what a "double effect" or "the runaround" are, but the look on Jonathon's face told me he knew. Cool trick, I enjoyed it.
Magicians have a special language of their own to describe techniques that have to do with their craft, so a few key words from Penn let it be known that he hadn't fooled them, but who cares? It was a great performance, and if he can pull off a stunt like that, more power to him!
The clues are kind of in the name...
@@davidyoung5114 no shit sherlock
I would bet the run-around referred to his escape and running around to the other side of the stage.
The double effect likely means that's not his hand coming out of the couch.
I like how they edited in "as seen on fool us" during post production, that's really cool of them.
Love Jonathan! Such a great performer.
This trick is almost laughably simple but the execution is what makes it interesting.
SIMPLE???
@@daniloapostolov-dacatv1536 Well, yeah.
@@daniloapostolov-dacatv1536 yep, it is. Masked magician did exactly the same trick but with different prop, not with a couch.
Isn't this just a variation of "Blast Off!"?
@@poeticserenade I hadn't seen blast off in years. I went looking and saw they did it on fool us. Teller is still doing that at 70? That is impressive.
I love Teller's face of joy when Jonathan walks from behind the boxes 4:24
Lol, I always love it when I get to see him perform. He is so much fun to watch!
This is hands down one of the best things I've ever watched, ever
Great to see you back again , wonderful trick! Also despite the virtual audience in 2021 the show must still go on :)
You are amazing and the look on Penn & Tellers face shows that exceptionally well!
Love the final reveal with the straightjacket still on!
What a fantastic act. Loved every second of it. Nicely done!
This was amazing. Loved every second of watching it and the comedy was on point all the way. Incredible :D
The hand coming out with the cereals was absolute gold, i cracked up so hard !
I do very much believe i know how you got out of the couch and something tells me Alison knows too :-)
But your acts were so good, i would pay to go to one of your shows if you ever came to my city :-)
I love how entertained teller always looks during these performances.
Another amazing act! Your performance is so natural, the comedy not contrived at all. Brilliant!
I really loved this. I don't care if I know how it was done. This was absolutely fantastic. Making me laugh is pure magic. Thank you.
My favorite straight jacket escape ever. Not even a joke. That was fantastic!
You’re a legend. So entertaining and so funny. Love watching you perform.
I never thought I'd see someone escape from a couch before. I loved this.
What a funny, original & wonderful performance. I loved it!
Man I just love your magic, your act is so polished, so engaging. Fantastic!
I also luved the escaping, while not escaping from the jacket lol that's brilliant!
This guy cracks me up. Great trick and the straitjacket surprise at the end was both funny and unexpected....and cool, if I'm being honest. Love the humour!
Quite amusing sir! When you showed up with the doll's arm to the air I immediately started laughing because I realized you didn't escape the straightjacket! Congrats!
Fantastic as always. What a brilliantly conceived performance. Great fun.
A lot of creativity there. Thanks for the entertainment, Jonathan. Much success ahead for you!
What a cool update to see Johnathan later. Beautiful family
Half expected Burnns to pull his hands free as he was walking off stage 🤣 I love this guy! Always funny and inspiring
This was so so so great =) I loved every min of it! Awesome job Johnathan!
You fooled me, at least! Lol. You the best!, Jonathan! Sending love from the Philippines!
One of the most entertaining magicians I’ve seen on the show yet!
You are fantastic! Definitely more interesting and funny than ANYTHING on TV right now.
Very nice! I remember watching you perform a long time ago at the Hole in the Wall Cabaret in Baltimore. I'm so happy for you to see you being successful!
Glad to see you back on P&T. I still have the little rubber man you gave me when I randomly ran into you at that Puddles concert in Glenside! Can't wait to be able to go back to live shows in the future. I'll will definitely try to catch one of yours then.
Electric and wonderful personality. World needs more people like this
This was an absolutely fantastic act. I figured Penn & Teller wouldn't be fooled because there are only so many ways one can escape from a straightjacket, but just look at their reactions. That is pure joy on the faces of people who have seen so many acts, you'd think they'd be numb to it all.
you haven't fooled them yet but still hands down the most entertaining magician they had
I love this guy and have watched everything he's done on "Fool Us."
idk if youll see this comment but you are genuinly one of the funnest people i have ever seen, it is crazy how hard you make me laugh and I love you mentality of laugh with you rather than at you thats a great way to go through life :)
I just love him. He's always has a smile on the face even if he lose. That's very impressive to me 😊
This has to be one of the greatest magicians ever pure perfection of humour , expectation and delivery
Oh FFS, please stop trolling. This guy is just lame.
"You're welcome America"
Thanks bro.
Always nice to see something different.
Very good act. I love those acts that I have no idea how there done. Alot of the slight of hand stuff you can catch on their show but you reaching through the loveseat and coming out the boxes was awesome
Definitely a great trick and the concept is incredible!! Great stuff!!
You are an excellent showman! Great job!
When he closed the couch I thought you were a goner had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
