    These are new so I haven't tried one yet. I'm not sure I can afford that level of materials. I did visit one of the Kanile'a stores in Oahu, as well as some other stores that were authorized Kanle'a dealers and tried some out and all I will say is that it changed my approach to buying. The way the entire instrument vibrated and sang and shimmered, I really wanted to get it into a studio and mic it up with some 414's. While I watched the Kanile'a videos about their new models, this review has me far more interested in these and I was already interested. As a musician and audio engineer, I get it when things have certain price tags and I'm glad you addressed that topic as well.

    Yeah it’s pretty pricey as far as ukuleles are concerned. But the craftsmanship is world class. Corey and Kalei play these all the time and they make them sound like a million bucks.

    Ukulele's were popularised in Hawaii and they have the Koa wood and specialised in them they set the trends. This manufacturer certainly make top quality instruments with little to disappoint. The wood is extremely patterned.
    Unsure the need for the true-relief edge, I've never found the normal edge created any problem. Sound is very nice too. Much to say about this one. Nice review.

    Really nice video as ever. Very nice instrument indeed, even if I am not totally convinced by the appointments : with such nice woods, I will prefer it without any decoration, binding and rosette (especially since that the line redesign of the brand there is no longer any understated American made Kanilea it seems). Or a more coherent decoration, ie. binding also on the back and for that price, real mother of pearl or abalone around the sound hole or even some sand inlays like they know how to do (or even better rope binding every where like a Kamaka, even if I know that it is not in Kanile'a tradition).
    Taking a step back, I am not really sure what the brand strategy is since the line redesign : I guess that now if you want an understated and not quite highly priced Kanilea you are supposed to go for an Oha model made in China. And that for the American made ones, the brand is trying to go for an higher end segment of the market by limiting the number of "standard models" (3 in fact if I am following right, the KTR-T, the colorful maple topped one and another) and pushing people to go reach for a built to order model (more or less like Collings or Santa Cruz in the guitar world).
    It seems that there is no longer anything in the America made line under 2500-3000 (and there was a few months ago, the beginning of the standard line was more around 1500, the ones that where cheaper to made without any appointment). Not that I am saying that the new prices are not justified with this level of finition, but clearly now owning an American made Kanile'a is reserved for the middle upper, whereas before it was still in reach of the middle class, even if it was an investment).
    But is there sufficient market in the ukulele world fo that new price bracket for what it is still a small factory ? Will they be able to sell enough ukes at that price to maintain the current level of productions in the US and not fire some people ? I do not know how many people actually work at the factory in Hawaï and how many ukes they are producing a year, but I have trouble thinking that they will be able to sell as many at the new price than they used too.
    Well maybe it is a different picture altogether, and maybe sales of the American made ones are declining since a few years due to the new oversea competition from the likes of Millar or Anuenue. And that anyway, they will not have been able to maintain the production at the previous level in the US factory, hence the launch of the Oha line in China and some kind of downsizing and targeting of an higher segment of the market for the USA line. A new strategy to adapt to the current ukulele market, and a solution for the family to maintain the brand in the long run. Yet, if it is the case, call me sentimental, but I find it a little sad (even if it means in practice that the quality of the ukuleles as a whole is rising and that really nice ones are now costing only a fraction of what they used to do ; and, in that regard I am pleading guilty as I personally own two really nice Millars).

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  Місяць тому +1

      I think the decor on this is still pretty understated - letting the wood do the talking. Personally I think abalone or rope work would have made it look far too gaudy - but that's a subjective thing.
      Yes the prices for USA made have climbed dramatically - but that's not just a uke thing - it's linked to a host of global price pushes on materials, taxes, energy, shipping, you name it. In the UK, food prices alone have risen by over 25% since April 2022.

      @@GotAUkulele Yes in with the gap that are becoming bigger between the Euro and the Dollar and the Pound and the Dollar, Kanile'a are unlikely to become more affordable in the near futur 😅.
      At 3000 euros, even though Kanile'a are really nice, I am more likely to buy a luthier made one, it is possible to find really nice one in Europe at that price (even if it is not like owning a piece of Hawaï, or that the resale value is unlikely to be the same, but most of the time I am buying long term anyway). It is always a pleasure to exchange with you.

      Honestly -like I said to Alex at SUS in an interview with him - when you are looking at ukes at this level, there really isn't a bad choice. Just slightly different feels and tones, but they are all out of this world. Kanile'a, Kamaka, Koaloha - all as good as each other.
