- The Devil's highway: This Unreported World was made ten years ago - in the years since, tension around Arizona's border with Mexico has become one of President Trump's defining issues.
Back in 2008 reporter Aidan Hartley went to the border. He saw migrants facing extreme, potentially fatal, conditions while travelling through the desert in the hope of getting across the border.
This episode first aired on 08/02/2008.

I know many legal immigrants that came here with a $1 or less and with time, sweat, and a little blood. They now have successful business and a healthy family. Its only the lazy and abusers of the system think as you do.

I've heard many horrific stories of people disappearing by the border, & the sad part is their families in the U.S & their native lands are waiting for them but their whereabouts are unknown, can't even mourn for them because there's no body, no certainty they really died, the families & friends just spend their days wondering, hoping, waiting.
ya a lot of the time .. they die from exposure.. but even more horrifying, the cartel catches them , and kidnaps them for ransom or to traffick .. esp women and children. Men , thy will threaten to work for them , or kill them.

Damn... the lady at 4:12 was the exact situation my mom was in 27 years ago! Single mom, left her daughter with my grandma in Guatemala to come to America and send money back to them. Last year was the first time my mom got to see the daughter she left behind - she’s 32 now with kids. It’s insane to see what people go through for the sake of their family. I can’t help but see them as my mom, my aunts, my uncles, so this video really hits close to home.

@Long Duk Dong fair to whom? I grew up poor, but my mother ended up getting married and we lived okay. The only help we got from the government was for my brother and sister who were born with clubbed feet, so we were able to get medical help for them. My mother worked various jobs and got help from friends and family, that was what she depended on.

Great report, touchy topic, but I would like to see Mexicans with better leadership so that they can build Mexico up. Everyone in the world cannot come to US for a better life. We need to learn how to build better infrastructure in other countries to see the economic development grow. & in honesty as a Mexican, it is your native country so after you have made your money in the U.S. it is likely for them to move back home. I say better leadership and fix and believe in your country, its beautiful.
Not trolling or making light of your gracefully put response, but frankly it seems a lot of people don't have a chance to build Mexico up which is why they leave...don't you agree? Often in truly poverty stricken areas (not the whole of Mexico, obviously) there isn't any room for any kind of change except leaving. I guess what I'm trying to say is that often the people who leave are not looking for something better than ordinary maybe, perhaps they're simply looking for better than very bad. They mostly have no say in infrastructure and leadership and more worry about basic human needs.
purple cosmos I agree with needing basic human needs, but I am simply saying all Mexicans will not be able to move to the U.S. There aren't enough jobs and it could cause over population. I strongly believe in building infrastructure in third world countries as well as countries lacking resources. It's not instant gratification but over time, can be a success.
That's true. Obviously a much longer term solution is needed. But Mexico is an upper middle-income country with the highest income per capita in the region and is the fifteenth largest economy in the world. It's not as though all Mexicans want to come to the United States. Corruption and income inequality are the big issues affecting the government so I agree with your saying leadership needs to change.

You need a firearms licence in the U.K. They need a very good reason to refuse someone a shotgun licence to go clay pigeon shooting on a weekend (convicted terrorist, on a lifetime firearms ban, etc). Dairy farmers have hand guns to kill calf to steal the mother’s milk, hunters of highland deer have sniper rifles for hunting season, as well as, fox hunters. It’s a common misconception, even in the U.K. that there is a true blanket ban on firearms. They just don’t know how to get a firearm legally.

For the people hating on these illegal immigrants i suggest you read the book called The Devil’s Highway where you will be put in the illegal immigrants shoes and understand why they risk their lives crossing the border. Very good book with lots of details from many perspectives.

This channel isn't like "in your face". They do great journalism. Some people just don't care what others think of them.

My mother came illegally because I was dying and doctors in America saved my life. My mother trekked the desert for days with a diaper bag with the hope that the medical care here could save me. were it not for her bravery I would be dead. Would you let your family die or break a law? If you have someone dying your car do you go the speed limit because "its not an excuse it's still possible" I really hope not.

@@Black_Swordsman76 1. A grass roots effort, from Mexicans who are already in the US, wiring money back to family and friends, to get together and place a portion of what they send, to arm local mailtias or an army with weapons, clothes, and foods, etc. In order to overthrow the the present regime.
2. Same as 1, but a civil uprising akin to the French revolution. Governments need people and into today's world optics is everything. I don't think the government or it's soldiers can stop the masses, if the masses are truly discontent and want reform.
3. The citizens make a deal with the devil and utilize the drug cartels. Why not? They have the power, the resources, and the money. Most of these men are in gangs, due to the poor economic conditions of the country, and those men - some who maybe cold blooded killers will not want to wage war against the citizens themselves. Unlike back in the 70's and 80's, I'm sure the cartels have a lot of US politicians in there back pockets. If they could pressure the US to legalize drugs, then this would set them up as major players in the market, as long as Uncle Sam cuts them a fair deal, but it will be pressure from the citizens that the cartels have to worry about. Again a government needs people, not the other way around. Even the cartels foot soldiers are not going to kill friends and family members who are not associated with the cartel. The cartel can't screw over the foot soldiers are risk being in the same debacle as the current government.
In the end any of the above options call for great social upheaval of its citizens from all parts of Mexico. The options 1 and 3 relay on underlying financial support to make it a success, and all the above options require sympathetic propaganda, in order to make the world care and especially the cartels, who will have to be dealt with at some point. I say drug legalization and giving them a seat at the table is a step in the right direction.
This reminds me of the Oregon trail.

The 1900+ mile behemoth wall will never work and probably doesn't actually get completed. How many more trillions of dollars of debt risking national security will it cost to build and man? Why not do what all other countries do? Have strict enforced immigration law requiring visas that also include stiff penalties for illegal businesses and heavy fines for employing illegal aliens under the table. For example, if I go to Thailand or Europe to over stay a visa, I'd get arrested, detained, fined, and then deported requiring an expensive unplanned last minute flight. I also wouldn't be allowed to do a business or buy into a house without a local host national partner with law preventing foreigners from owning no more than 49% share as to protect locals economic interests. However, if I went to central or South America, a work visa to teach English or work in tourism is too complicated and expensive in most cases, that I'd have to exit and re-enter on tourist visas every 3 months. The America's are in disarray because that's how the establishment that controls the US wants it. If it weren't for that, there wouldn't be so many trying to sneak in just to clean toilets for they'd have a viable way of life in their home countries.

Hi, so it can take several months to even years for your request to even process. Then there’s also the cost to get papers. The simple answer is if you’re rich you can get your papers soon but like the majority of immigrants are poor it would take them even longer to get papers. You also need to have at least one direct relative that is a citizen of the US. There are also requirements of the USCIS that are complicated and most foreigners would not be able to comprehend it.
Then again the immigrants that are poor probably also didn’t get an education because it’s expensive for them to attain so it could also slow down the process. In some cases the immigrants might not have the time and need money soon so they end up having to cross over illegally. Mexico is not sunshine and rainbows like the resorts US citizens go to. People coming to the US 🇺🇸 need to stop coming illegally. They need to stop saying they are Mexican because they are not. They mainly come from other places of the world. Drastic measures need to be placed onto the countries of Guatemala, El Salvador that are the main countries people are fleeing from.
