- The first time I saw you
Down by the blue ocean
You were talkin' like a fighter,
Independently.
You were hanging on to a dream.
That's what I remember.
But the wildness in you
I can't explain.
Then one day on the street
Comes the beautiful stranger.
From such a casual thing
A great change has come.
And if he could have loved you more
Still there'd be no reason
To go down that road
Where love's in vain.
And now I think I know your heart
When love carried you away,
I heard you returned to Half Moon Bay
To Half Moon Bay.
And it's a cold, cold night.
You can almost hear the sea wind blow
As though on a radio
A lonesome sound.
And he wonders where you are tonight
And what are you thinking.
You're lost when he repeats your name.
And you turn on the headlights
As the raging moon rises.
You go deeper and deeper
In the familiar dark.
And as the fog is creeping in
Down in the valley,
You're high on a hill
You're still going home.
And now I think I know your heart
When love carried you away,
I heard you returned to Half Moon Bay.
And now I think I know your heart
When love carried you away,
I heard you returned to Half Moon Bay
To Half Moon Bay
To Half Moon Bay.
I was a singer and so there were alot of songs, but this is one that I have to write about and talk about somewhere else because out of them all, there is something about this one, this singer and this recording of it that's just too lengthy to get into here. I first came upon it after my first NDE and heart attack in 1996 which led to major life changes. I used to sing along with it while driving along the Hudson River towns, early winter and it seemed to me, I was singing for my life and that the person who wrote the song understood that predicament.
'comes a beautiful stranger...'
Missing you very, very much, P. But I'm ok. :o) Love and Blessings.
Which Half Moon Bay does the song refer to? There are places called that in England, Australia, the US and Saudi Arabia according to Google Maps.
Benetan kanta zoragarria eta hunkigarria. Hainbat eta hainbat bider entzun eta gehiago eskatzen didana. Entzunaldi bakoitzean gauza berriak eta esanguratsuek asaldatzen naute, munduan jende gehiagok honelako esperientziarik izateko aukerarik balute...
Probably the most beautiful ballad of all time, and I don't say that lightly. Gerry is a treasure. The strings on this from Edgar Meyer are otherworldly. What a vocal.... she's incredible. My kids have listened to this as an example of real vocal talent: emotion, tone, phrasing. Just beautiful. I have this CD somewhere but can't find it. Thanks for posting!
Could this song be any more tender, loving, strong, memorable, or beautiful? I didn't think so, either.
I have been listening to this song for a long time. The songwriter: Gerry O'Beirne. Yet ANOTHER person from Ireland. This land breeds musicians like no other place in the world. Somehow, this song just works. Is it magic?
Few songs can match the beauty of "Half Moon Bay" or of Maura's singing! Thanks for posting this magnificent song!
This is definitely one of the most beautiful songs of all time.
