- 50 cal. bow and arrow
Finally, I am able to thumb draw this Manchu Bow. Measured originally 145lb@33.4" (metric = 66kg @84.8cm) but I'm only doing 32" for now. This is the heaviest manchu bow I know made of fiberglass. It's harder to pull than the Hungarian bow of similar draw weight, due to the higher initial draw weight and force draw curve.
Apparently, this arrow is too weak. I might need 2000 grain arrows of 3/4 inch thickness lol.

No one gonna mention dude can draw a 145 lb bow. My 65 lb recurve already feels like it could kill an elephant these Mongolian bows are crazy
I lift and you don't need to be that strong to pull a bow like this, you are using your entire body when pulling since one arm is pushing the bow away while the other one is pulling the string and you are also moving in such a way the whole upper body is engaged in pulling the string, I think that if you can dumbbell row a 30 kilo dumbbell for sets of 12 you can do this easily and for as many reps as you want, and 30 kilo dumbbell rows is achievable in 1 year of lifting.
I'm not saying this to stroke my ego, I'm just saying that you could do it to in 1 year if you try, hell even less if rather than doing a full body split you focus most of your effort on back, biceps and rear shoulders.
@@382u3uuej Whats your heaviest bow? i think maybe 70 is the heaviest Ive pulled and feels pretty dang heavy. I need more practice though.

Kinda bonkers how "dexterity" or "agility" is the primary stats for bows in most games. But a powerful bow needs The Rock level strength
Shoulder mobility and stability is just as critical as scapular strength.

Believe it or not, warbows in the Middle Ages we’re almost always this heavy of a draw. There are some that were as high as a 185 pound draw.
And archeologists can tell who was an archer that used heavy bows like that because their bone structure is so altered from years of shooting the bows causing massive muscular imbalances
I imagine cause they had to go through armor

For ppl that don’t know, 145 lb pull is insane. I used to use a bow when I was a teenager and it was only like 50lbs I think? Maybe even less lmao. Could barely pull it back.

@@supremememe4340 yeah that’s a lot from what I remember. I haven’t used one it forever but I still can’t believe that he did 145 lmao
Insane now, simply just ‘heavy’ for back then.
High protein diet, physically demanding conditions, rigorous daily activities, etc etc etc…
Men back then were much taller and stronger than now.
With training it isn't crazy, these bows aren't meant for super accurate shots. Moreso yeeting arrows down range very far into a large group with still enough force to kill whatever it hits
@@NightOfTheLiving8bit that's literally the opposite of true LOL men have gotten significantly stronger and taller over the centuries. Like nutrition and training knowledge would be literal witchcraft to them back then. Your average man now could probably beat your average man 2000 years ago to death with a bean bag. All malnourished and weak, dead by 32 and all.
As the broken part of the shaft is leaning to the left it would seem to me that the arrow was fish tailing badly and the short bow to target range range did not give the flights time to correct the fish tail before contacting the target.
ahhh i see thanks that makes sense, also i think the layers of plywood behind contributed
That, and also could possibly benefit from “tuning” - getting the right combination of spine, arrow head weight, length, etc, so the arrow itself releases more straight, and doesn’t need that initial distance to straighten the fish tail...
@Real Life Engineer good point also notice my crossbow bolt with very stiff shafts shoots perfectly straight . It doesn’t need to bend around the handle

When your arrow flys so fast it sets off nearby car alarms.
Imagine a bow so powerful it breaks the arrow as soon as it leaves the string making shrapnel, essentially being a medieval shotgun. Now that's some power.

Holy shit that’s insane bruh I NEVER would’ve thought that ancient warbows were THAT heavy
I barely drew my friend's a bow at 70-something lbs and thought I was going to destroy my shoulder. Props to this beast for being super human
This splintering is actually pretty useful when fighting against plate armored opponents. Imagine hundreds of those arrow and a lot pf them get splintered on armor or deflected. Those „shrapnels“ en masse would surely find open gaps in the armor and penetrate
Agreed
Just wait until the broken shaft and splinters impale your hand holding the bow. Geniuses!
@@williambrandondavis6897 it seems more like they splinter on collision rather than when it is initially released.
The thing is, breaking takes energy. In the video you're referring to, if the arrows hadn't broken, they would almost certainly have penetrated. In one of Tod's other videos, similar arrows easily penetrate similar thickness of steel in the form of a brigandine because the flexibility of the armor reduces the deceleration enough that they don't break.
This is why I would like to see Manchu bows and arrows tested against similar armor. Storing more energy isn't the deciding factor here (though Manchu bows beat any other historical bow by that measure, to my knowledge); what interests me is the fact that Manchu arrow tips often have a long shank (9 cm or something) mounting them to the shaft, along with a rayskin wrap near the shoulder. With the shoulder being the part of the arrow that undergoes the highest stress (for the same reason that the bottom floor of a skyscraper supports a greater load than any floor above it), it's the most likely place to fail. If the reinforcement can prevent this, we should see significantly better penetration against plate armor.
@@Wolfen5207 Now, imagine how less consistently arrows would have been constructed 1,000 years ago, and then think of the fact that every single pull of this bow would be akin to gambling your forearm. Is this the one arrow that will break on loose? Who knows! Lets roll the dice!

A 50 cal in the medieval era be like
They've actually recently found the graves of some medieval archers. The archeologists immediately knew they were archers because the bones in one of their arms was significantly larger and denser than the other from years of drawing back heavy bows. In 1000 years they'll dig you up and know you were an archer by looking at your bones lol

Imagine that damage done to you and having a broken arrow lodged in you AND the splinters as well. Those dang splinters....

I've heard the Mongols used recurve bows that were like 150-160 lb draw weight and fired those off of horseback
Only Elite Keshig guards and Chahar soldiers of the Dayan Khan would've used that bow.

Lol, sure. That’s like comparing an m4 to a sling shot.
The arrows for war bows are usually supposed to break, even if they aren’t they usually get to damaged from impacting whatever they are shooting at since they have to be powerful enough to go through light armor at least

There’s a very good reason arrows have spine ratings for different draw weights.

You can just feel the sheer force moving that arrow as it leaves the string
The sound of it collapsing on itself as soon as it hits. That's a powerful bow.
For the people wondering why it's so hard to draw back, it's because back in the middle ages people weren't butter-soft like we are today.
Another thing they didn't have..... guns.... but thanks to technology and smart people we don't need stupid fucking bows
No, the imperial Qing army was anything but Middle Ages and a compétent horsemen (in the Chinese imperial armies by this time footmen used only crossbows and muskets) armed with a bow takes years of training. The banners units that operate this now are usually the elite calvary division of the army.
