So, was the sword and buckler the sort of standard sidearm on Renaissance battlefields? And what was the main weapon? I assume it was a halberd or pike, but were there others?
Sword for sure (buckler optional) as a sidearm for spearmen/pikemen/halbardiers. There was also a class of light infantry (in both Spain & Naples) that were called "Sword&Buckler Men." They used Sidesword & Rotella (a medium-sized round shield--think Capt. America) only.
Yeh, she did really well. Four years of training, and she attends both clubs. Also lives with me, and so can get lots of advice! Her sword and buckler work is especially good. Rapier and sabre coming on too.
Nick has an ability that I've seen in a few other individuals (like Matt Easton for example), which I don't quite know what to call, but I can only describe it as "pressure". Perhaps it's confidence in knowing what you're doing, and not second guessing yourself. I've seen others who are skilled, but it almost feels like their demeanor is very timid and like they're unsure of their actions.
Generally, in my eyes, a refined blend of technique, experience and often exquisite judgement with a honed, tempered competitive spirit that doesn't get in the way of the aforementioned. Pressure, certainly but not born from over-extended ambition. Watching these fencers is a joy.
So what do you think of the Light SPES Jacket? I predominately train Bolognese Sidesword and am trying to decide on whether to get that or wait for the V2 Black Armoury Jackets since they have the integrated neck protection. Is the Light SPES jacket sufficient padding for sparring with metal sidesword trainers and for tournament competition for Sidesword (solo or with buckler)?
I absolutely love it. It was just what I was looking for. I would consider it perfectly fine for all sparring, but it of course depends on the levels of contact you use and impact level you are happy with. Some of the extremely high contact stuff seen in some tournaments today, no. Though I think a lot of the Bolognese tournaments tend to be a little more restrained (civilised!) than some. With the pads in it has at least the same if not slightly better protection over the most likely areas to be hit as the normal Spes jacket. I have removed all but the shoulder pads from mine though, as I wouldn't feel the need for them in most of our sparring.
Great, thanks for the feedback! So, is this the same jacket as the "SPES Officers Jacket 350N" that's up on the Purpleheart website, or a different one that hasn't come out yet?
No that is a very different jacket again, but I do have one of the officers type on its way to me. Will review in December, along with the Light AP. Light AP is not on their shop yet, but can be ordered via email.
Very positive. They came out a little lighter and more agile in the blade than expected, though I know they now make a heavier version. Seeing as this type of sword came n such a broad variety, that is really down to personal taste, and I am glad to have a variety anyway. It handles really nicely. Flexes well. Edge wear seems about the same as Regenyei (so very hard wearing). Grip is a close fit when wearing RD's, but just about right. Will review after more testing.
I can't add much more to it than what Nick has already said. It's a lovely weapon and I want one! It was a welcome relief when we swapped, it's far more agile than the Regenyei! :)
Esther and Nick both have fantastic form. Great to watch!
Holy crap! That dude in the camo pants is in the WRONG class!
That engagement at 2:23 was particularly awesome on both sides.
This looks better than any choreographed fight on movies and tv
Love the exchange at 2:22 !

Person on left is ridiculously light on feet. Scary 😮. Wouldn’t wanna face
Yeah, I was impressed by her performance against Nick in this video. Nick usually seems to dominate everyone he spars.

Which model of Malleus Martialis sidesword are you using?

Specs for the sword?. thanks for the video
What a nice match! Will you post a full review on the sidesword on a later date?
Yep, just as soon as they have had a little more testing. Just two fights so far. Another few weeks and I'll be ready to do a full review.
Great sparring match. Impressions of the Malleus sidesword from the fencers?

no way! my hema teacher makes those!
Then you are very lucky!
Malleus? A side sword named Malleus . . . . Clearly they need to be fighting sword and flinlock . . . With steeple hard and prayers to Sigmar.
Malleus just means "hammer" in Latin.
