    To save 1 hour you sail on the wrong side of the designated lane in poor visibility. You would of caused many ships in your proximity problems. Very selfish and terrible seamanship.

    First of all, well done Finn. Congratulations. A great effort. Second...I do admit I wasn't there to experience everything. I do admit I've got a few miles logged under my hull, but hopefully I can learn something new. If , I had been there, and under the same circumstances as you folks, I would have kept the sail down, and relied on your engine. With sails out of the way, you have 360° visual. That was important. With engine on, you have manoeverability which is what you needed. Speed believe it or not, in your situation, was not going to happen. Without sails to worry about, you then had 4 pairs of eyes operating. Their only function is to watch. Btw I'm guessing the overtaking vessel would have had you on radar long before you had a visual on him. But it was too damn close eh??
    However, these comments are based on what I observed from this side of the screen. And that's my $2 worth of input 😂.
    Take care guys. Atb from down here in Godzone. PS... that was nerve wracking. However I managed to get my Pacemaker restarted.

    • @TheCruisingKiwis
      @TheCruisingKiwis  Рік тому

      I (Rachel) agree with you about the sails but Rob loves to sail everywhere if he can. On this occasion we were motor sailing. I'd like to think we were showing up on the ships radar but not sure as the angle he emerged from the misst told us he hadn't seen us either and steering at a head on (ie not over taking). There were several fraught seconds (before I picked up the camera) where it looked like we would not have time to get out of his way.

      @@TheCruisingKiwishi Rachel. 100% agree with Rob commitment to sail everywhere. But for safety, you need to sacrifice a few things. Particularly in a heavily congested shipping lane. However and not to dwell on it, you guys are ok.

    Personally @rickdelaney950 I would of done it too. By the way one blast of a horn is I am passing on the left. While its not sailing 101, the crusing Kiwi's still have the right to sail across the flow of powered traffic. The course taken may have been 301-401 but not a challenge for skilled sailor
    This was 8+ Months ago. Bugger.
    Rob and Declan did just fine. Sure the sudden squall might of been a surprise but checking the weather before you leave tells you what to expect on route.
    Shame about the sail getting ripped again. I am not sure the absent Ivan could of been that much help Rob. Its interesting when Racheal describes this as a near head on collison and Rob says yeah it was a little busy.

      Pros and cons, calculated risks and all, I'd do it again but drop the sails earlier on sight of the bad weather which arrived super quick. The other route would have still been difficult in that weather, especially given ships were not appearing on ais.
