Thanks a lot for this. I just spent hours trying to figure out which filter to get and how to install it, and you answered both questions. Bravo!

I was thinking of buying the C3 Cat and Dog, which has a charcoal filter. Could I replace the charcoal filter with a hepa filter?

Can you hand wash and then reuse a Miele HEPA 50 (after it dries of course)?

Maybe if you can wear a mic so the sound is louder and focus. And closeup on the vacuum when you insert the filter. Or have subtitles.

Do we change the pre motor filter or remove if we have the hepa one on top on the classic C1

Wait a second. I have the C2 Electro Plus. Is there a HEPA filter that has active charcoal with it? I have the SF-HA 50, but I do see ones that have charcoal in it. Are you saying there are different types of HEPA filters you can choose from?

Hi John- there is only one HEPA filter. HEPA filtration is the highest level of filtration you can purchase for your machine. You can also choose from a step below a HEPA filter, which is called a Charcoal filter. The charcoal filter has activated charcoal granules in it which removed pet odors and unwanted smells. Like that "vacuum" smell. If you wanted to switch- you would just need to purchase the AA50 Charcoal filter, and remove your HEPA filter, and replace with the Charcoal filter. We have many customers that will alternate a charcoal filter (when pets are shedding) and a HEPA filter when it's allergy season :)

@@VacuumCleanerMarket I know. I thought thr AirClean Carbon filter was rated as a HEPA, but it's not. Guess that explains the lower price. That blast of clean air from the exhaust is pretty incredible considering all the filters that air is passing through.

John, Miele did use to make prior to 2013 a Active HEPA filter for both the SF AH50 ( the style yours takes) and the SF AH30 that had a activated charcoal layer. These filters were blue, & had a spot to write in when the filter was installed. The charcoal layer was activated carbon, the same stuff sold in cans at pet supply stores for fish tank filters, sandwiched between 2 sheets of very thin paper & a plastic grate, & glued on the bottom of the HEPA filter paper. So when the filter is installed, the air passes through the activated charcoal layer, then the HEPA filter paper before being exhausted back into the room. The reason this was removed & the filters are white & you only get pleated HEPA filter paper now in the HEPA filter was to increase the amount of filter paper inside the plastic filter housing. Why? Because the European EN1822 filtration standard for vacuum cleaners had been changed. Prior to 2013, the standard for HEPA filtration that a filter had to meet to be called a True HEPA filter, or Certified HEPA filter, was a particle capture rate of 99.97% @ 0.03 micron size particles. That standard was changed to 99.9999% @0.01 micron size particles. These new white HEPA filters that Miele manufactures meet that filtration standard.
If you want a Miele HEPA filter with the activated charcoal layer, keep a eye on Ebay & check in with local vacuum shops that may have old stock. You can find the genuine blue filters at times. However, if you aren't worried about using a genuine filter, another option is to buy a aftermarket HEPA filter with the charcoal layer from Ebay, Amazon or Aliexpress. These HEPA filters do meet the older EN1822 HEPA filtration standard, 99.97% @ 0.03 micron, but I find they fit & work just as well. There are also generic versions of the white HEPA filter without the charcoal layer. I find the best prices to be found on Aliexpress, so look there first, but also make sure to check Ebay & Amazon as well if you are willing to buy a multi pack of filters to pay the same price per filter as you would on Aliexpress. Don't worry about the quality of the filter - sure there is a little less paper, but put a generic HEPA filter beside a genuine white Miele HEPA filter, but it's only slightly less, & when you consider you're paying only $5 to $15 for a generic HEPA filter versus $50 for the genuine Miele HEPA filter, take the savings & don't whine. As long as you aren't seeing dust leak back into the room & you're not sneezing, that's all that matters right?
However, if you do insist on genuine Miele HEPA filters & parts, what you can do to save money is to buy the Performance Pack from Ebay, Amazon or your local Miele dealer. It's a great way to save money on both the HEPA filter & the bags as well. Just be sure to check how many bags you're getting along with the HEPA filter so you're not overpaying & still making the dealer the same profit as they would selling the bags & HEPA filter separately. Also, if you don't mind buying the European version of the genuine Miele bags, try looking on Amazon & Ebay for the Miele XL Pack. They contain 8 Miele HyClean bags & 1 Miele HEPA filter. The HEPA Cloth material used to make the bags is EXACTLY IDENTICAL on both the North American AirClean bags & the European HyClean bags, the only difference is the HyClean bags have cloth straps that distribute the dirt evenly inside the bag so all of the filter bag walls are exposed to dust, not just 1 part of the bag, & it extends the performance & airflow of the bags inside the vacuum & fill them fuller before requiring a bag change. As for the charcoal layer & reducing odours? Well, if you buy a round activated charcoal prefilter for a Honeywell HEPA air purifier, you can cut a filter the same size as the pre-motor filter & put that in the holder along with the pre-motor filter. Be sure to put them in with the pre-motor filter facing first, then the charcoal filter, so the pre-motor filter captures any dust that escapes the bag & not the charcoal filter. You can make LOTS of charcoal filters, & just change it along with the pre-motor filter when you change bags.
Another option you can use if you prefer to use the genuine Miele HEPA filter is to buy generic Miele FJM HEPA Cloth bags on Aliexpress made by HIHEPA. These bags have a charcoal layer built into the HEPA Cloth material, so every time you change your bag you are changing the charcoal filter as well. Good luck finding a option that works for you :).

@@johnblack8036 Well, I am a allergy sufferer, & I own a 2007 S5280 Miele Callisto canister vacuum, along with a couple other brands. So I did my research when I bought my Miele.Through owning it over the years & having to buy the filters & bags from it, you learn stuff over the years :) . By the way, don't be afraid to use the generic Miele FJM bags. The filter material may be 5 ply HEPA Cloth material whereas the Miele bags are 9 ply, but as long as you buy bags that the plastic bag collar is IDENTICAL to the genuine Miele bags, you won't have a problem with dust leakage & ruining your motor like your Miele dealer would make you think. The only issue I find with the generic bags is the airflow & suction decreases a little faster using the generic bag. This is because if the bag has less layers, the fine dust won't escape but it will cling to the bag material & clog it faster. To remedy that, every time you vacuum take your bag out afterwards, take the bag outside, give it a good vigorous shake & reinstall the bag. Doing that loosens the dust from the bag material & restores the suction & airflow as the bag fills. I can usually get them to 3/4 full before changing them. Just make sure that every time you open the bag door & check the bag, make sure you push the bag collar back down fully into the bag holder & that it clicks in place. Otherwise, the bag door tube won't penetrate the bag collar, & dirt will bypass the bag. This is regardless of whether you use genuine or generic bags. I also make sure I take the hose off the vacuum & make sure I can see the bag door tube has penetrated the bag by seeing the bag closure flap & the dirt in the bag. They are nice machines, & clean well, but you certainly do NOT need to pay Miele's premium pricing for their bags & filters - the generics work just as well with no compromise in performance. Also, I wouldn't buy another one....I have a Electrolux canister vacuum that filters just as well as the Miele, is more convenient & easier to use, bags & filters are cheaper, & I prefer the hose & tools included with the Electrolux. I also find it cleans carpets a little better....suction & airflow on both machines are about the same, but the Electrolux L shaped powerhead is more effective at grooming & lifting the pile of the rug, & also more gentle on the fibres too. I plan on buying another one to have as a spare, & when this Miele finally breaks down, out it goes! It won't be getting repaired.

Sorry for the delayed reply to the both of you! Those filters are included just as additional filtration for the air coming out of your vacuum. They are stuck pretty good to the vacuums lid, so they are intended to be lifetime. But if it does fall off, we can get a replacement :)
