OMG, I could not believe the grippiness of the SG5!!! I felt so secure all 4 days on steep and wet terrain. And my feet were happy!!! Amazing. Thanks for the detailed reviews you’ve done. I trusted you and bought mine online 😮. ❤❤❤
Just recently used the Speedgoat 5 on a 10 day trip on the GR221 in Mallorca for the first time. Well it was the first time using a trail runner on a multi day trip......and I have to admit, I might never use anything else. What a good feel that shoes is providing. My traditional hiking boots might be only used for some VERY technical terrain in the Alps. Thanks Justin, I think you made me curious to try it out with one of your earlier videos! Keep it up - good and interesting content here.
Funny I also used them for the first time on the GR221 (first long distance trail). Literally no feet issues, but it did do a number of the outsole that has lost most of it's lug depth after ~350 miles which is not amazing.
I used these speed goat 5s on the vermont long trail this summer (completely destroyed) traction worn out, same problem in this video fabric separation from the bottom, and holes on both pinky toes
So happy to hear these are narrow. I'm constantly looking for narrow shoes to fit my feet, or whole family has narrow feet-and long, we laugh about having natural ice skates! I'll look for these locally sand give them a try-on for fit.
I’m looking to get a pair for my upcoming thru hike of the sht in Minnesota. I fit in the standard width but it’s a little narrow. All the reviews including yours talk about the stretch of the upper allowing some wiggle room. Did you go with the wide width the second pair? And would you recommend the wide sg5 for myself? I know it’s hard to say without seeing my feet in them but I respect your input. Thanks Justin!
Helpful review. How’s the tread compare to other shoes you’ve tried? Lone peaks? Salomon’s. A concern with max cushion shoes is the extra instability and stress on ankles (which have to do more work compared to minimalist shoes). Did you get sore ankles? Do you need wide sizes for other shoes? Have you tried a lone peak 7 wide version?
I am both mens and women's SG4's in wide. Funny, but certain colors in the same size were too narrow. I also wore the Bondi 7 wide men's/women's at work but these ultimately started feeling too narrow. I should sell a couple pairs! I recently tried on bondi 8 4E. Just a little too narrow! My orthotics fit the same as the 7's 2E's do! I still like to get my feet into some men's SG5 wides but I'm guessing that they won't work. Luckily, I think the couple pairs of 2E NB trail runners I got are going to work for hiking. Like some of the other commenters wrote in what you said, I also think my little Taylor's bunions would probably blow out the sides of the SG5's.
Justin I was wondering if you might compare the SG5 to the Mizuno Wave Riders at some point? I just purchase a pair of SG5's and am currently trying to decide between them and my Altra Lone Peaks but I have a mate who does long distance and raves on about the Mizunos.
Great review. I’m about to crack open my 4th pair of SG5s. Loved every iteration but always disappointed with the durability of the sole. 300 miles just about sees away all the heel lugs and some of the toe lugs. Because I use them for trail running in the UK, it is rarely dry. Grip is good on all but the wet, sloppy mud. I have found that these are the least comfy of the SGs but still are great for those long distances. Completed 3 Ultras in the SG5s are no blisters! As far as fit is concerned, I size up a full size (9.5>10.5) and ensure that I use the very top eyelets for fully lock-in. They are a fantastic shoe and I hope they continue to improve….oh yeah, sack the colour designer! 😉😆
Awesome review!! Question, have you had any experience with the La Sportiva Wildcat's? It's the only shoe I've found to work for me, so I keep going back to it. I use them for both daily hikes and for 20 miles/day carrying a 40lb pack. I'm always looking to improve my current setup.
I’m on my 4th pair of Speedcrosses, and I bought the Speedgoat 5’s to compare. Both shoes are very comfortable if you have narrow feet, as I do. I was impressed with the comfort and rocker action of the Speedgoats and I rate them a bit more comfortable than the Salomon’s.However, the upper on one of the Speedgoats tore at the 195 mile mark. That’s way too soon for a $155 trail runner. These were all miles done on rough, rocky terrain, but I’ve been getting 300-400 miles on the exact same trails with the Salomon’s. So the lack of durability is my main concern with the Speedgoat 5’s. Otherwise it’s a great shoe.
My altra had the same holes in the upper sides. It took me 20 minutes of sowing with dental floss by the side of the road. 3 years later and they're still doing fine. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I tried them on in REI and found them to be narrow too. When I'm in the market for new hiking shoes, I'll look at them again. Maybe they have a wider version. Or another style that is for less narrow feet. I normally wear regular width shoes so I guess these just run narrow
While Hoka did improve the heel tread problem of ver 4 to ver 5, the sides blew out on my pair of SG 5’s in only 200 miles. They tried to please the gram weenies and removed the laminate layer on the 5 that was on the 4. The uppers on my pair of 4’s are still in excellent shape even though the tread is completely worn down and the foam is shot. I’ve sent several messages to Hoka on this issue and have never gotten a response. Very disappointed. I have to have wide shoes and the Speed Goats were one of the few choices. The ver 5 is also narrower in the toe box which is also no good. Unless Hoka fixes these issues in the ver 6, I’m done. The uppers have to last as long as the treads.
Same experience. Also no luck with their customer service. Hoka just ghosts their customers. Try the New Balance FF Hierro (they are wider and have extra wide versions).
@@wio2189 that’s my plan re New Balance. I could understand Hoka’s non response if I’d sent a nasty gram. All my comments have been polite, factual and constructive.
I bought them and although comfy originally, soon the insole was moving around (even on the second returned pair too). Plus they didn’t last long. I really don’t see me buying any more Hokas in the future.
I don't like the trend of knit uppers at all. They're not as durable, and dirt and mud soak into them too easily. So...I bought another pair of SG4s last year, that I'm saving for summer backpacking (if the snow ever melts :/). In the meantime, I am running in a pair SG 5s while trying some alternatives, too.
I have over 500 miles on a pair of Speedgoats and it's about time for them to retire. I have almost 500 miles on a pair of Oboz and I'd say that the Speedgoats are a little more durable than the Oboz.
I have been wanting to try these, but until now the colors have been putting me off from doing so. Personally not that into screaming bright colors. I wish Hoka would at least release a black or grey pair. I think I’ll order a pair nonetheless. If they are as great as you say then I should just get over myself and the comfort of the shoe should be worth it :p
I got 800km out of them. But I was still disappointed. So much microplastics left in the nature and compared to good old hiking boots it’s so wasteful…
I hiked through three pairs of the Speedgoat 5 last year on the PCT. The quality of the upper is abysmal. Two pairs made it just 400 miles but on one pair (both shoes) the upper completely separated after only 200 miles. It also has to be said that a shoe that fails that catastrophically and unpredictably, isn't something for the backcountry. I still like the cushion and the outsole but that's by Vibram anyway. Given their price point I am definitely unsatisfied by their durability and many fellow thru hikers felt the same. And let's be frank, it's planned obsolescence. There is no reason they don't build them to last 600 miles. Hiking in New Balance FF Hierro these days. Much cheaper, good cushioning and MUCH better durability.
A very fair and honest review. Thank you. I use Hokas for daily wear and like them a lot.

I just bought a pair of speedgoat 5 gtxs . Pretty stoked to try em out

I have barely any time in my SG5 (~50 miles) and I enjoy them. They dry quite fast and they work for my feet. Thanks for the update!
I used these speed goat 5s on the vermont long trail this summer (completely destroyed) traction worn out, same problem in this video fabric separation from the bottom, and holes on both pinky toes
Thanks for the review! Thorough as always!
I have them and love them for hiking. Injinji socks and SG5 for me is the best

Love the SG's! Currently wearing the 4's 😎

I love my speed goat 5’s. After wearing altras for years. The speed Goat 5’s are like wearing Cadillacs on my feet. Their awesome!

how would ou compare the salomon speedcross to the speed goat?

Topo mountain racer 2 is my fav. It's basically the same shoe but without the tapered toe box. The grip is amazing.
Does hoka make any shoes with leather uppers (full or partial)?
Can you do the same test for mafate speed 4? Thank you advance.
Yo dope review

can someone let me know how the arch support is on these shoes? i want to buy the wide ones but im not a fan of bare minimum / flat soled shoes
The shoes have a 4mm drop and not much arch support at all, so if you need that perhaps this might not be the shoe for you.
Try Hoka Anacapa Mid!
The Mid version has higher upper part to support the ankles.

You'll want to make the switch over to Saucony or La Sportiva then!
Tbh I bought these mainly because they were called Speedgoat.
Might name my first born Speedgoat...

Speedgoat 5 GTX comes in red or black!

Mine look like that after 100 miles.

Dustin has 4s... .tell him to get some 5s like me and Justin and all the other cool kids.. C'mon Dustin, get on the ball yo
OK so these shoes are garbage. Got it.
