Most of the upgrades from the 6 to the 8 were done by software and I think that it is pretty much inacceptable that they do not release software upgrades for these older models.
fbnes I agree. The image sensor itself looks exactly the same. All software improvements. Maybe a slightly faster chip in each one. The mic is definitely better in the 8 though.
I'm not giving these bastards any more money unless they invest in good hardware instead of this slight tweak bs. Looking forward to buying from their competition though (gopro user since hero 2) I'm done with your bs gopro!
I would bet that the Hero 8 is a firmware upgraded Hero 7 Black with slightly larger body to accommodate heat dissipation. Pretty confident that a firmware update would bring the hero 7 black to the exact performance of the hero 8. They are the same sensor for starters.
@@adraxis Sure... But what competition ? Cause if you think Osmo or even Sony and others, who can argue to have a better package today than the Pros (not to mention the extensive action related accessories the Pros also have) ?
This is hands down the most extensive review I have ever seen for a GoPro. Good job sir! You've convinced me to upgrade from the 6 to the 8th! Thank you for the video!
@@alenajhorn it depends on what you're using it for. I always put mine in the waterproof casing so I dont really care that the lens cant be swapped out.
I've already seen bunch of GP8 reviews but always waiting for yours. The fact GoPro doesn't grant you camera for an early review actually makes you truly unbiased.
I love these side by side comparisons. I currently use a 7 and am happy with it, probably not worth upgrading yet in my opinion, but that stabilization in the 8 made my jaw drop! Can't wait to see what the 9 brings to the table!
Hey, love your detailed and straightforward reviews. One thought I had was the new built in mount and how sturdy it is, hopefully it isn't one of those "built to fail" type things that we will end up having to replace in 2 years. I plan on using it for surfing and using a mouth mount so that built in mount is gonna take a beating. Hope to see that in your detailed review, thanks again for making these great reviews
That's helpful info to hear, thank you for sharing! It definitely feels a LITTLE flimsy, but only time will tell. I partly appreciate the fact that the fingers can be replaced, but also slightly concerning ;-) There's always the protective housing accessory for another $50 :-/
This video was still valuable to me 3 years after it was made. The big takeaway was that the Hero 8 is still a solid choice in today's market. Even though it doesn't have a front facing selfie display, it introduced next level image stabilization and improved enough sound quality that it is still competitive with today's offerings.
Managed to find a used GoPro 7 Black for $120, only outstanding note in its condition is a small ding on the upper right corner of the lens cover. Can't wait to make it my primary from my Akaso V50Pro
Finally! What a great comparison, as expected. After watching your detailed comparison, here's my though : 1. If you already have a H7Black, i don't think it's worth upgrading to H8B, unless you really need additional units. 2. If you have H6B or previous series it's really worth upgrading to H8B. 3. If you don't have any action camera, then H8B is on my top recommendation, worth every penny. 4. If you don't mind other brand then DJI Osmo Action is a great option, cheaper but the stabilization will be on par (I guess), but I still prefer the color from Gopro.
Thanks for posting this man! I am finally ready to upgrade my 4 silver and was considering going with the 7. I think the 8 will be the best option for me as the better audio and smooth stabilization are the main upgrades I'm looking for. Im a small creator and use the go-pro and my iPhone for all my filming. The extra $$ for the 8 will be worth it for me! The 4 silver will still be used on my tripod shots.
And what's the story with the stabilisation in low light condition? That is a weak point of any digital stabilisation on the market. Has it been improved in GP8 ?
Just an unbelievable video - thank you for putting the time in! I'm about to purchase my first GoPro. I'm going to be going on a cross-country road-trip that will include stops at places like Carlsbad Caverns, The Grand Canyon, Sequoia National Forest and will be driving up the Big Sur coastline. I'll also be doing likes of hiking so I'll be attaching the camera to my car for the scenic drives and then plan on wearing a harness for my hiking and sightseeing. After watching your video it seems to me the stabilization of the 8 makes it worth the extra money. Let me know if you disagree - and thanks again!
Was waiting for this, great review! I'm sitting on my GP4 Session, which I really only use while skiing. That image stabilisation on the 8 looks really good, so I'm seriously considering upgrading. Guess I'll wait for Black Friday, see if there's any deals to be had!
@@AuthenTech Yeah, ended up not being able to wait, so I decided to make use of their 'Trade Up' scheme. That gives you 100 Euro off on the Hero 8 and only 50 off on the 7, so the price difference then drops to 30 Euro, which I'm fine with.
The fact that your Hero 6's battery was the lowest may be simply because older batteries have diminished capacity due to age. I assume you didn't insert a brand new battery in all three Heros? Nice comparison though, exactly what I wanted to see before ordering the Hero 8.
Pay a guy on fiverr to do it, we could all pitch in it's probably like $200 total and have him open source it and tweak it. I had a guy in pakistan hack, tweak, and open source an app for a vehicle scan tool it was $200.

excellent review. I'm in the process of getting a gopro. With this comparison, the extra few bucks isn't enough to deter the 8. Some other reviews I've seen had me at the 7. Thank you for the side by side review.
A HUGE thumbs up for stating the obvious to those of us with the GoPro Hero 7...NO QUESTION that most features in the GoPro Hero 8 could have easily been included in a firmware update to the Hero 7. A few features may likely require the new "blue" battery, but 95% of the Hero 8 is simply a firmware tweak, nothing more! Subscribed, liked and now, bell-notified!
Thank you very much for this informative video. I've always wanted a go pro for vlogging holidays and this has helped with which one I'm getting. Definitely getting the 8 and can't wait to test it out myself.
Companies exist to make money - not to make you happy. Making you happy is only a means to making money. Also, firmware development costs money in terms of engineering labor. Anything with value has a price tag, even when it is not physical hardware.

Funny how when the hero 7 first came out, all the review videos didn't have any shake in the footage. Now that the hero 8 is out, well 😏
Mike Brock exactly what I was thinking but if you compare 6 to 7 you would feel like before 7 is almost stabilized.
Agree! Just as if you look all hero7 release videos, no complaints about the frame, and all of the sudden it turned out to be a nightmare to use.
I have the same feeling. H7B is still good enough, the H8B just cut more to get better stablization
@cameraflyer Cut more area of footage to stablize the video, you can find the H8B get a smaller FOV when the the boost activated.
