@Sunyrayman123 thank you for watching and your kind words! I am currently using the latest edition of Bluebeam (20.2.60). That may not have been the exact edition at the time of recording this video, but all the same features shown in the video are still available. The Excel version used is from the MS Office suite 2019. The exported CSV (Comma Separated Values) file format works on any Excel version, the formulae and the macros that I have developed will not however (but that's a whole other subject).

I'm currently a steel detailer that is planning on going on my own as a subcontractor. Could you give some guidance on what a fabricator looks into when finding a detailer-the paperwork involved, insurances, the bidding between the detailer and fabricator, etc.
I consider myself an excellent detailer. However, I lack knowledge on the business end on how to close a deal with a fabricator.

Absolutely, as a Project and Executive Manager I can certainly tell you what mattered to me and what we received from Detailers. I'll start with the easiest - insurance. Professional Liability Insurance (formerly called Errors and Omissions) is truly the only insurance coverage that will matter to your customers. In the event that a detailing mistake causes a costly mishap on the project, your customers will be looking to you to pay or make up for it; sometimes this can be very expensive. There's an imbalance between the cost of detailing services and the value or potential impact on the job (i.e. your contract might be for $10,000, but a single mistake might cost $100,000). Professional Liability Insurance will cover the costs for your mistakes. Conveniently, E&O is a "claims based" insurance policy, meaning that you'll be covered so long as you have a policy (including costs for mistakes made prior to having your insurance policy - sweet!).
Next is the paperwork process, which is fairly simple. The actual job process will be 1) submittal [for review] 3) approved drawings [shop and field] 4) change[s] orders. Each of these processes are typically billed separately, thus giving you your billing schedule. I will note that schedule is typical, but some do it differently. Another "typical" example is that submittal invoices are usually around 20%-30% of contract value and the approved drawing package makes the rest (change orders are billed specific to each). DON'T FORGET RETENTION (usually 10%)!!! Your quotes and contracts should state what your hourly billing rate will be for re-work and change orders as well.
As for bidding, as with all contracting, it's typically "a whore's market" meaning that the cheapest wins the day. Overtime customers will come to value quality, and may work with you exclusively because you actually save them money by reducing errors, but getting your foot in that door can be hard and certainly takes time.

Why create separate files? Would'nt it be more efficient to use bookmarks and bookmark headings?
@Max Versluis that is an excellent suggestion! I would have to agree; bookmarking the different plan sets would also be a great way to quickly separate them without segregating the Construction Documents.
What about cleats and plates?
Hi, I have a doubt, I have found how to takeoff steel connections, but unfortunately I haven´t found a software to do that. By the way, I'm from Mexico, I always receive plans and the percent of misc is really diferent on every project.
There are several options for takeoffs, and they're not all created equal. Especially with the different designs that you can see from all different regions, you need a system that allows you to be flexible yet accurate on each project. Bluebeam takeoffs, I believe, is the best platform for that. It's simply the digital version of paper takeoffs, and the information or metrics you gather from it can be more easily tailored to the project and/or your company's standards.

Hi i am trying to learn how to make accurate estimates on steel jobs i am curious how do you tell if you are responsible for the material and fabrication or only for the Erection process?
@Dylen Hesseling, thank you for reaching out. Typically an RFQ (Request for Quote) or RFP (Request For Proposal) will specify the SOW (Scope Of Work) being requested that you bid. If ever in doubt, contact your client to discuss what their needs and expectations are. If you're bidding to multiple clients pursuing the same project, you may need to have this conversation with each one, so that "scope gaps" aren't later identified in a buyout meeting, or having your bid rejected/disqualified.
If you're bidding either just the fabrication or just the install and you're trying to determine who's responsible for supplying what, I'd refer you to AISC 303 - Code of Standard Practice; specifically Section 7. ERECTION, Subsections 7.8 Field Connection Material and 7.10 Temporary Support of Structural Steel Frames which have a lot to say about this matter.

What Bluebeam tool set were you using to do your takeoff?
Seth, excellent question; thank you! I've actually created my own custom tool set which contains (almost) all of the available steel shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, Bluebeam does not yet provide a tool set with this information, so I had to develop it myself.
@@spcgroup1076 I would be very interested in seeing a short video on how you made that tool set. Currently, I have been using Bluebeam just for highlights and inputting my takeoff directly into Tekla EPM. However, our estimating department is looking to see if we can use Bluebeam to do our takeoffs and import the Bluebeam excel table into Tekla EPM where we can make our final tweaks. Learning how to make a toolset like yours would be a great first step.

The Bluebeam profile which I've created (and the toolsets included) were specifically designed to work with Fabsuite (now a part of Tekla Powerfab) and produce a CSV which can be directly imported in. I think I could be of great help to you and your company's estimating department.

I think ; could be a good Idea ; IF you can explain. from the scracht for Instance, when you do not have a print copy . doing it by computer, you should have the proper tools, ether way by hand or a software, that allows you, to mark up any thing you should mark or use a MS. Cause the mark up will allow you no to reaccount the elemnts..
