How to Collect Crystals in Arkansas at WEGNER PHANTOM QUARTZ MINE | CRYSTAL DIGGING GUIDE Episode 3

- In this third episode of the Ultimate Crystal Digging Guide, I go on a trip to the Wegner Phantom Quartz Crystal Mine.
Join me as I find plenty of clear crystal points and clusters as well as a few rare black Phantom Quartz Crystals.
The Wegner Mine is located in Montgomery County near Mount Ida, Arkansas. This area is known to be one of the best quartz crystal deposits in the world. It is the largest singular deposit of quartz on this planet, stretching all the way from Oklahoma to East of Little Rock. Some of the best quality clear crystals can be self-collected around Hot Springs National Park and Mount Ida.
This rock hounding adventure starts with a bumpy open-truck ride that takes approximately 40 minutes and travels thru the Ouachita National Forest. After arriving at the mine site, your guide will point out the tailings digging area where you are allowed to collect as many stones and crystals as you would like. The allotted digging time at the actual mine is four hours. Make sure to make reservations for this mine. (Filmed in August 2018)
This peculiar crystal mine is known for many Specialty Master Crystal Formations such as Phantom Quartz, Tabular Quartz, Double Terminated crystals and more.

These are all tips I've been using for as long as I've been digging too. Pretty good rule of thumb to use.

Thank you. Both mines are awesome. It depends on what you’re looking for. At Wegner’s you will find more smaller clear crystals and at Colemans you will find larger but more milky pieces generally. Good luck!

You can find bigger ones at all the mines, but Ron Coleman Mine is known for larger pieces in general. Good luck to you!

Do you know anything about rocks, etc. that can be found in NJ? I live in Fort Lee. This is on the cliffs of the Palisades on the Hudson River. In the middle is the George Washington Bridge which connects Manhattan and New Jersey. I looked it up and it said the Palisades were formed by volcanic rock and basalt. In addition there was a lot of blasting when building the bridge all those years. There are parks all along the Hudson for hiking, etc. Thank you.
I’m not familiar with the area, but Facebook rockhound groups may be able to help. You can also check into field guide books for the area.

Coleman offers a longer dig time and you are more on your own.
The forest mine at Wegners is adventurous with the open truck ride to the site and there is a tour guide helping folks to get started.

I’m not sure what you are referring to exactly. It is most likely sandstone, shale or quartz.

This is the $40 phantom mine. All you have access to there are the tailings piles.
The $18 option is their other mine where you have some access to hard rock mining and lots of tailings also.
