I’m so happy you’re trying to be more health-conscious. Because I grew up seeing my mom and aunties make the things with all this back also. Unfortunately, they all died of heart disease and other complications so I stay away from it actually I haven’t eaten pork in over 30 years but every now and then I do crave it around this time of year. Thanks for sharing. Let’s try to be healthier moving forward.
I learn this from my Creole neighbor when I lived in New Orleans. It was awesome! She added chicken broth instead of water. Thank you for sharing your recipe!
Thanks Janelle! I try to keep my dishes simple. That’s the way I was taught how to cook. Keep it simple and make it good. Adding a lot of unnecessary ingredients takes away from the dish in my opinion. I’m not knocking down anyone else’s style it’s just not mine.
I had some leftover ham steak with bone, chopped onion, one garlic clove, celery stalk, and two cups chicken broth. I sauteed the vegetables added the broth and beans, then came to UA-cam for further guidance. Your dish looks delicious. 😋
The only problem I have with this video, is that I can't have a taste!!🤣🤣 that looks so good!!! I lived on beans and corn bread for almost a year, but I still love them. God bless you for sharing your video!! Brings back so many memories!!!
Hey Tina! It you eat pork, smoked ham hawks are great for adding flavor. You can also use smokes turkey wings smoked turkey legs or smoked turkey tails. I’ve used them all and each one is delicious. If I’m going to cook mustard/turnip greens I usually cook my smoked meat in the crockpot the night before then the next day I have flavorful broth to cook the greens with. Thank you for watching and God bless.
sorry to be so offtopic but does anybody know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Gordon Kaison Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Good morning everyone. Jackie I just love me some great northern beans. We grew up on them. I use smoked turkey wings or legs in my beans. Your pot look good. Keep cooking.
Thank you Willie. I’m a country girl born and raised and we grew up eating a lot of beans too. Then again we ate off of the land and had vegetable gardens everywhere. Beans are a blessing but I have to take my BeanO before I eat them or I’ll be sorry. Lol!
Ty for posting this I bet you cook really good 👍😊 I just made this recipe you put on here I love beans just didn't know what all to put in praying this we'll be good looked it
Looks so good Jackie, I use the Goya ham seasoning my hubby is vegetarian (they’re real good and tasty), so now I have to do 2 pots because my grown sons eat ham hocks fat and all 😂
That looks so good! I love ham hocks but they're getting kinda pricey in my area, esp. for something that used to be considered cheap meat. Lately I've just started stocking up on hams whenever they go on sale and freezing them. I use the bone to make stock that I use to cook the beans in. I get about two batches of beans for every bone. Works great!
Thanks for a nice & very simple recipe. Only problem I had was that I didn't look at the size of beans when I bought, ended up using a 2lb bag. Lol. But it worked out fine.
This is good in the pressure cooker too. I like the way the ham hocks flavor the beans. Have you ever wrapped the skin in several paper towels and zap it in microwave for cracklins?
You are the captain of your own ship. This is the way of one Crock-Pot pioneer. Follow your own destiny. I'm going the way of the renegade with liquid smoke
Don’t forget the chicken stock.Ham hock gives it flavor (I add onion and other herbs and spices-minced garlic is a must for mine) but that chicken stock makes a huge difference!
One of my favorite soups, stews, best dishes ever.. The ham hocks elevate the dish beyond what even bacon does.. It's so meaty and delicious.. Those hocks provide so much meat and it's so tender. It was a pleasure to watch this as I love delicious food in the making and best on the plate! 🤗🌻✌💗💌
Thank you nikip! You can’t beat the flavor of smoked ham hocks in vegetables. The only thing I don’t like them in is homemade vegetable soup. I use a real ham bone for that. If my vegetable soup isn’t cooked just right my family won’t even touch it. Thank you for watching and God bless.
The crock pot that I’m using for this dish is small. I have 4 in all. If you are cooking a lot of beans make sure you purchase a larger one. The Pioneer Woman has one out that’s a real nice size. I bought one of hers from Walmart when they were on sale for $29! Thanks for watching and God bless!
I love your video and I'm going to do my recipe just like that but I do have a question do you add vegetables to yours? I add celery chopped of course baby carrots chopped of course green peppers and onions all chopped of course adds tremendous flavor
Of course you can but I haven’t used one before. Funny thing is I have one but I’m a little intimidated to use it because I don’t want it to blow up on me. I originally bought it because I love beans and I wanted to be able to eat them without having to cook them for hours. I’m going to try it out sometime in the near future 👍🏼
Didnt see this video till today but tried making Northern beans a couple days ago in the slow cooker but the beans were so hard. I only soaked the beans for about 5 hrs and cooked for 4. What did i do wrong on the beans? Should i put the beans in pot after washing, not soak and just cook all night with ham hock for best result?
I usually cook my beans overnight when I cook them in a crockpot. Try cooking them longer and I’ll bet they will be tender. Cooking them overnight will eliminate the need to soak them too😉
@@JackiesSouthernSoul thanks Jackie, in remade them and discover night and they turned out perfect. 11 hrs on low. I think I did 5 hrs on low last time and should had been high. These were absolute delicious and the meat fell off the bone. Thank you.
Lol! The only time I eat the fat on the ham hock is when I make my Cajun Boiled Peanuts. If you like boiled peanuts get 1 large can of Cajun Style Boiled Peanuts from Sam’s and 1 pack of ham hocks from Walmart. Put them in a crockpot and let them cook overnight on high. You will eat the whole thing😋
Hey Allison! Yes you can freeze ham hawks. I always freeze mine because I don’t cook with them every week. When I’m out shopping and see some meaty ones I grab them up and freeze them until I’m ready to use them. Thank you for watching and God bless!
Hey! This is a small crockpot and 1 pound of beans so I just put it up to the rim. If you have a large crockpot you will have to try it out to get your measurements but for 1 pound of beans try 8 cups of water first. If you need more water add it accordingly. I use mine overnight most of the time but I use it during the day sometimes. You just need to start your dish first thing in the morning. Thanks Sweetheart. God bless!
Hey I was wondering do you know the actual total time that you compare these beans? I know you said eight to 10 hours but I wanted to know do you remember the exact time
No but when using a crockpot on high the beans should be done in 8 hours. I have a crockpot that has a timer but most of the time I use one of mine that doesn’t have a timer. I let them cook overtime so most of the time that’s going to be longer than 8 hours 😉
Hey Tee! I’ve had those forks for so long that I don’t even remember when or where I bought them from. They are serving forks though. Thanks for watching. Merry Christmas!
If you use canned beans I would cook the ham hocks with no more than two cups of water first then add the beans. You might have to experiment with your cooking time after that so you won’t end up with mush. Thank you for watching and Happy New Year!
Don't the fat give you the good taste? Awesome video thanks for sharing. Btw, Do you ever fry up a mess of fat back bacon with corn bread and beans? I'd like to see a video on that.
Yes! Ham hocks are the best for adding flavor to beans. I like to use country ham to season greens. There is nothing like it. Thanks for watching. Merry Christmas!
I’ve never cooked oxtails but I can give them a try for you guys once it gets cooler. I used to eat pigs 🐖 feet but I haven’t in so many years. I’ll make some of them too. I’ll make plain barbq and baked. God bless!
I like this old school cooking. This is what I grew up on. Thank you ma’am! ❤️
Thank you Tramekn!

That extra added flavor takes them over the top. I love it!

ham hock looks good. when that is finished it will be the best ham you ever ate
Absolutely 👍🏼
oh gonna set my beans to soak and make this tomorrow : )
Them ham hocks look good
I put mine in the spaghetti strainer! Best recipe for beans ever and I don’t salt my beans when I’m using ham hocks.
I know the house is smelling REAL good!
Absolutely 👍🏼
Thank you for showing the ham seasonings for those of us who like some lighter beans.
You are so welcome Dear!
Happy Thanksgiving!
My mom didn't use pork flavoring she used onions and real ham hocks and yes I love to eat the fat it's the best part. Thanks for making this video.
Yesss🙌🏽💯🔥
I love a good old fashioned smoked flavored beans... yum!
The best with a nice piece of cornbread 😉👍🏼🙏
That was very good too, I've always wanted to try cooking that kind of Hamhock. Now I know thanks.
💓Thank You! It is my go to recipe for beans in the crock pot.

Lol Jackie!
I've never cooked anything with ham hocks in my life but because it looks so easy and so inexpensive I'm going to give this a try

I love all types of beans, your beans look so good.
Thank you Dimple! God bless!
looks great! That's how we here at home cook beans. Except we add garlic bulbs, bay leaves and cumin.
I loved this recipe. I use smoked turkey tails instead. So goooood 😋😋
My favorite beans!
I have the taste for sum and will be making some next week...yum yum yummy 🥰
You make me hungry.. thank you for the recipe..😇😇😇God bless Mam
Thank you so much! God bless.

I love lima beans made the same way, YUMMY ! I can't wait to make a big pot and I will try your cornbread recipe to go with it.
I love Lima beans. I cook them from dried beans and I like to use the frozen ones too if I’m in a hurry.
I’m new to ham hocks... lol turn 50 and you start eating like your parents!
Going to try this one tonight. Thanks
Mouth watering 😋😋

I don't have a Crock-Pot but I know what I'm having for supper tomorrow. And I might just have to go out and buy me a Crock-Pot.
Hey Refried BeanDip! Crockpots are wonderful and so convenient. I don’t use them cooking meats a lot but for beans you can’t go wrong.
Great recipe 👍🏽
Looks good I'm making great northern beans tomorrow
Thank you Shunda!
Yummy
Beautiful !!
Looks so good Jackie, I use the Goya ham seasoning my hubby is vegetarian (they’re real good and tasty), so now I have to do 2 pots because my grown sons eat ham hocks fat and all 😂
Those ham hawks are good. I’m guilty of eating the fat, back in the day but now I can’t handle all the fat.
My mouth was watering by the end of this video. I’m making this ASAP with fried cabbage and white rice right along with it. 🤤
Thank you Jonathan. Your meal sounds delicious!
I always cook mine with a bit of onion. I have never put sugar in mine. I like using bacon too.

Looks Fantastic 🙏🙏🙏
Lord that pot look good
Omg I wish I lived close I’d gladly take that ham hock fat and skin. Reminds me so much oh my childhood
Great recipe....doing it today!
Something to try is using a package of lipton golden onion soup. Keep the ham hocks. I can only make cornbread in a cast iron skillet 🙂
Now I love Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix so I’m definitely going to try that. Thank you!
That's a good idea, I like Lipton onion soup I mix it in my burgers.🤗
Omg the skin is the best part

Hey there! No I’ve never tried that. I love pork skins too. I’ll give it a try the next time I cook them!

No seasoning? No onions? No peppers 😢
Yeah I like to cut up a onion and pepper for mine- cook in a base also this is different

If you ain't using a hock you ain't cooking beans; btw great choice I love great northern as well. Some fried cabbage on the side and your good to go!
This breaks all deep south rules. But it still looks good and to each their own. So I can't even hate.
Crockpots are a blessing of convenience but I do use the stovetop for pinto beans occasionally.
That Bean Dish look DELICIOUS!! I AM BUYING A CROCK POT IMMEDIATELY!! I CAN TASTE THOSE BEANS AND HAM HOCKS. SMH!!!

How many hours in total and how much water in total?
I love your video and I'm going to do my recipe just like that but I do have a question do you add vegetables to yours? I add celery chopped of course baby carrots chopped of course green peppers and onions all chopped of course adds tremendous flavor
You do it the way I do except I add a little bit of minced garlic. These sure look good.
Great idea!
That seasoning packet is full of MSG.
Can you cook these with a unatapot , if so how long and can you do a video on your recipes using it?

Have you used the bones and fat to make broth after cooking the beans and ham?
Low or high for how long?
Can you reuse the bones in bone broth?
I wouldn’t because most of the flavor is in the beans after it’s been cooked. I’ve never made bone broth so I’m just inexperienced with it. Sorry.
How much water do you put in when they are cooking the first time around (overnight)?
I fill the crock pot up to the rim with water or whatever liquid you are using and let it go.
Cook on low or high?
High!
🔥🔥🔥
Mmmm yes us country brothers love some of that fat I will be cooking this tomorrow
Looks wonderful!! Do you know if ham hawks can go in freezer? I might pick up some and freeze till I'm ready
