Holy moly, Soldano just dropped their most versatile amp EVER! The new Astro 20 has GALAXIES of tones inside it, and Uncle Ben Eller here is gonna explore them all on the newest episode of Meet the Machines!
Can this amp serve up the classic Van Halen/Van Hagar era Soldano tones? YES! Check out the tune I wrote inspired by this amp (mixed and mastered by the amazing @erockomania ) then slip off those socks and shoes and hang out for a deep dive of all 3 channels of versatile tones this 20 watt all-tube amp has to offer! With its built-in IR's and tone switches, it's just as at home in the studio as it is onstage. All options included, A/C blows COLD!!!
Playing this amp with my Jackson Virtuoso and the amazing UA OX! For more details on the IR capabilities, check out @RiffsAndBeards video!

Great video! Will the Astro do a smooth lead tone? I know some amps have an inherent fizz to the tone that can’t be dialed out that isn’t always apparent in a video. The tone from Andy’s Gear Box is pretty much my go to right now and that type of smooth drive is what I prefer. I’m trying to decide between this amp and the Lynx 50. ok I think I get it now, with the galaxies/channels. It seems the two OD channels are identical, they allow versatility. It's the galaxies that have the various gain stages. (pls correct me if I'm wrong). Today I set up 6 separate MIDI footswitch "channels" on my Ampero MIDI footswitch. At first, I set the gain and volume exactly the same for both OD1 and OD2, and tried each galaxy with each channel. Sounded identical to my ears (so Blue on OD1 and Blue on OD2 sounded the same; Purple on OD1 and Purple on OD2 sounded the same). So then I left the volume same for both channels, but set gain at around 10 oclock on OD1 and around 2 oclock on OD2. At that point, I had two noticably different "Blue" channels. Then I did the same thing for Purple, and now I have on one bank of the Ampero, four footswitches: Blue OD1 lower gain, Blue OD2 higher gain, Purple OD1 lower gain, Purple OD2 higher gain. It's so cool...it's a gradual increase from left to right (footswitch buttons). That went so well, that I went to the next bank of the Ampero and set two Red galaxy footswitches, one on OD1 and the other on OD2. So now I have 6 footswitches that give me effectively 6 separate channels (and actually 7 when you include the green/clean channel). Oh and also, I chose a different cabinet IR for the Blue galaxy settings. I have the speaker connection going to a Captor X and into one input of my interface, panned left, then the XLR balanced out going to the second input of the interface, panned right. Next thing to do is record some stuff in Reaper.

The number of cables has been reduced to two. No more pedalboard or amplifiers. No more worries about signal chain. Overall footprint is drastically reduced. I didn't watch to hear the Soldano. I just like this guy's channel. Like I said, I have a number of really nice tube amps that are now in the closet.

I feel like it’s not really a competition… both have room as far as music playing is concerned…I find the tone master sick as well as this soldano

But it is a competition of sorts. You are going to use one or the other for the most part. Tube amps are great but in terms of versatility, ease of use, footprint reduction and probably a dozen other things I'm forgetting, modeling is the clear winner. The technology in modeling has evolved to where you can mirror the tone of a tube amp and do so much more it's just crazy. When you see a band like Metallica no longer using amps on tour that makes a huge statement. Modeling is the future.

What does this have to do with the soldano?

I wish I could afford anything by Soldano. Unfortunately I don’t own a gold mine. Sounds incredible though.
