    Just saw Brad Marchand get called for shooting the puck over the glass in the offensive zone. Apparently the league is indeed, as the confused bruins' announcers put it, "legislating intent" now haha. Perhaps it's best to fire a "shot" in the direction of the net, (that just happens to go over the glass) if they'd like to make that play from now on 😉

    • @KellerClay-f6v
      @KellerClay-f6v 3 місяці тому +7

      Classic consistency from the NHL. Saw this exact play last year in an Coyotes game and there was no call, and offensive zone faceoff for I believe the blues who did it. Now it’s a penalty? Maybe they decided to take a look at it those over the summer

    • @District5-YT
      @District5-YT  3 місяці тому +7

      @@KellerClay-f6v Lol right? Apparently they did. I feel this could be a slippery slope. As like I said, who's to say what "just missed the glass" for a dump in. Marchand should have argued that, instead of implying his guilt and saying "that's not the rule" (Because that is the rule) haha... Perhaps if it wasn't as egregiously obvious as the Marchand play? But still. I'd rather they just make it automatic, instead of leaving room for ambiguity or referee discretion. Eventually I'll put out a video on "rules I would change", and since I don't want to see this play taken advantage of regardless, because it's too easy. That will be one of them. Like I mentioned, just rip a high shot over the net. Then what? I suppose they should just make any puck over glass plays (that weren't deflections) an automatic delay of game penalty.

    • @KellerClay-f6v
      @KellerClay-f6v 3 місяці тому +5

      Yeah. Maybe they saw your video and took it to heart lol. The last thing we need is more plays that are sometimes called and others not. As exploitive as these plays are, I wish they would clamp down on crosschecking instead 🙄 looking forward to the rule changes video!!!!

    My favourite hockey channel period. And it’s not even close. The writing, editing, and visuals are one thing. But the unique perspectives are another. I love actually coming away with something new instead of wasting time listening to someone pointlessly stretch out obvious things all dramatically. So happy I found your channel.

      Thank you! I appreciate it. Totally agree on the time wasting/clickbait channels. I also can't stand drama where there is none, or rehashed filler.. That, and I've seen so much "When the obvious thing is obvious", "the NHL has a problem that's not a problem", "this is INSANE for the NHL".. That I don't even contemplate clicking most hockey videos anymore. I tune in for some of THG's opinion pieces, and that's about it for me on hockey youtube these days.

      Yes I am including “hockey psychology”. When that channel isn’t plagiarizing Jack Han’s hockey tactics without shame. It’s desperate, clickbaiting, basic stuff that adds nothing to old news. I assume most of the audience is new fans or children.

    I think the main reason the Injury Reserve loophole doesn't get exploited more is because not many NHL players are willing to be the guy to sit out, or "get injured".
    For better or worse hockey players tend to be a bit 'intense' and often play through injuries instead of sitting out even when they absolutely should simply because that's what hockey players do. So even bringing up the idea that they should sit out on purpose to exploit a loophole would certainly go poorly in most cases... Most cases.

      If you pull your goalie and protect the puck, you have a period long man advantage. If you're up a goal, this makes a LOT more sense than giving away possession just for a (likely) brief 2 man advantage.

    4:50 Actually that happened in Rugby Union
    It's dubbed Bloodgate and the English rugby team Harlequins did it to get tactical substitutions in the form of Blood replacements.
    This happens when a player gets a cut that draws blood profusely or deep enough that warrants medical attention. The team are allowed a special substitution method called a blood replacement in which the player is withdrawn from the game and able to get the wound fixed. The team is then allowed to bring them back on at any time if they received treatment that stopped the bleeding. Harlequins abused this by having their players fake blood injuries to use it as tactical subs. Famously it was outed when one player Tom Williams faked an injury and was caught on camera consuming a blood capsule and winking as he was subbed off.

    • @District5-YT
      @District5-YT  3 місяці тому +2

      Wow, never heard of that! The investigation that followed must have been fascinating. "4 previous occasions" as well. That was quite the list of resignations and suspensions. Deserves some sort of documentary (if there isn't already one?) .. Thanks for mentioning this!

    There's a loop hole regarding the trapezoid goalie rule which allows a goalie to touch the puck outside the trapezoid as long as he's still in the crease area. Some (if not most) goalies these days are tall enough that they can lay down with their foot still in the crease and reach the puck a few feet inside the trapezoid.

Acted like Kuch literally shot his leg off of his body, crawled on the ice and had to be helped to the locker room. Kuch is ejected and guess who shows right back up as if nothing had even happened? 😂😂😂😂. Dude is either super human, or one of the greatest actors I've ever seen on ice.

    Really neat indepths District 5. 🤟 Edit note: I think in today's NHL the fighting is more spontaneus than before most likely (frusturation, getting under your skin, careless hits on teammates, whatever). Using elbows or UFA rules on ice... I doubt no even NHL bruiser wants to go into that. Just way too serious harm possibly done to either side of the scrum. I once heard a former player say over a podcast: "They wanted to take me out and this guy X sure enough showed up. He sure did a surgical job on me; out for the game but not worse than that and I knew he could have done worse". So, I do appreciate rules of respect specially how fast the game is.

    It’s worth noting that for the cap circumvention loophole, when Chicago did it against Tampa in 2015, Tampa brought it to the NHL owners or board of governors (some group of executives with applicable jurisdiction, idk which one) and proposed to change it so it wouldn’t happen in the future. However, they were the only team out of 30 to vote toward changing it. So it’s almost as if the NHL is uber-blind to what’s going on or are just conveniently ignoring it in the interest of having superteams and/or a few massively high-point players (though idk if that’s actually beneficial for them moneywise or not). Plus the whole $17m over the cap is nonsense when the majority of that cap belonged to Gaborik and Nilsson (retired players) but that’s besides the point altogether.

    In the 2000s passing the puck to the opponent for more time 5 on 3 was extremely common. That's the era Mackinnon grew up watching, so I'm not surprised he still does it

      Certain situations call for it much more often. If you're losing, then for sure do it. If you're only up one, why not protect the puck with your empty net man-advantage for as long as you can or until the period ends?

    I actually knew about the last fact because of playing NHL 24. It's just hard to do since you typically can't actually aim the puck to go over the glass and the best you can do is shoot at the goalie and hope for a lucky deflection.

    I have a hard time taking most of this video seriously…. the LTIR situation only comes up when it not their team and that makes it unfair…. The elbows during a fight is beyond ridiculous…. why? It’s not a 1v1 situation, and if I was on a team that had a dude getting elbows during a scrap, if the guy throwing elbows didn’t get kicked out of the game, myself or someone else would make him realize that he doesn’t do that shit again… lots of ways to pay a guy back with dirty play if they want to play ufc…

    • @TheFoolintherainn
      @TheFoolintherainn 23 дні тому

      There's no salary cap during playoffs. So ltir keeps the player in your franchise, they're not playing - and you don't need to be physically injured to go on ltir.
      It prevents them from dumping contracts down to the AHL that would have to go through waivers
      They've tried that in the past. Sending veterans down to the AHL to keep them playing, but not on another team. And they can bring them up for playoffs.
      Shored off that loophole
      It doesn't get used because these aren't NBA players. These are hockey players. You might want to lace up and try it out
      I don't understand what's not to take seriously in this video but that's your perception.
      It's not like the NBA, although Gary Bettman is trying to get it there

    The blood thing is so absurd even disregarding the possibility of biting your lip or blood capsules. Why should a hit to the lip warrant a full two minutes more than one to the cheek or forehead? Some people just bleed more easily than others, why should they draw more penalties?
