The reason the 240 is popular is because of it's durability , reliability , simplicity , safety , rwd , it's been around for 19 years(74-93) , huge engine bay for swaps , cheap to buy and fix , and possibly more. I'm hoping to get one of these as a first car , but I'll be keeping it stock other than changing the camshaft , rims , exhaust changed to the sport exhaust , that's about it.

I found your channel via my latent passion for some day owning a classic Volvo Wagon...and I spent a day enjoying all of your other reviews!
I live in Wisconsin, so I love finding fellow Midwest petrolheads....but I love that you claim your love openly for very different brands:
    Mazda...BMW...Volvo...ad infinitum...
Like you, I love trying out different brands and weighing their core brand-values and stating your honest opinions (and humorous) about them.
Great channel...thank you Volvo 240 Wagon!

Shooting Cars I bought a 1976 2000 Spider Veloce in 2017 after a trip to Italy.
It is a US-market spider with the big ugly mid-‘70’s bumpers but in my favorite Alfa color AR119 ‘Prototype Yellow’ which was rarely asked-for and remains rare- it’s the color of a yellow highlighter marker!
My other Alfa is my dearly-loved 2018 Stelvio TI Sport with every single option but the black wheels- it’s been amazing to drive year-round and crazy-reliable!
(Surprise!) trouble-free and thrills each drive...who knew..? Modern Alfas!

I own a 88' 745 GLE, cruise control, power windows, sunroof, light blue mteallic, manual trans with overdrive etc and it just runs and runs.
In Sweden when a car reach the age of 30 years you don't have to pay any tax for it and that saves me 2500 SEK per year.
One other thing is that you only need to go to the car inspection every two years, otherwise it's once a year.
And thats is another good saving on your money.

i just bought a 1988 240DL wagon for $1500 with only 150k miles! im not super knowledgeable with cars but there’s definitely work that needs to be done. the exhaust and muffler are hanging by strings (literally). just bought it yesterday, im gonna have a specialist look at it and let me know what needs to be to see if i can afford keeping it. i love volvos so so so much but i dont make a whole lot of money so we’ll see how it goes i guess.

I am 2:28 in, and already see problems with this review. First, there was no Turbo option on the 240 in 89. That was the 740 line. Next up, you might try finding a healthy specimen. The overdrive light coming on is a wiring issue. That light comes on when the driver turns off the electric overdrive in the Aisan-Warner AW71 transmission. Next up, the performance. My bone stock 1990 with 400,000 miles on the clock would run rings around that sorry example. It is BEGGING for some care. I would bet the O² sensor is filthy and that the cat is plugged. These cars need to be driven hard to keep them working. They don't like to be babied. As for sporty handling, with good, correctly sized tires and good shocks and struts, they may lean in the corners, but they hustle with the best. Nobody leaves me behind in the corners, and I have never heard the tires squeal. They will also achieve triple digit speeds. Personally, I have seen a solid 115mph out of mine, and it was still accelerating. The cars look like bricks, but airflow is carefully managed. As you pass the 100 mph mark, the car sinks on its suspension, becoming more stable. All you are doing is regurgitating the stereotypes without getting to know the capabilities of a well maintained example.
The seats on that 240DL are not leather. They are vinyl, and very badly maintained at that. At quadruple the mileage, the cloth upholstery in mine is still quite good. The other choice was cloth. They were designed and made by Racarro. They are very supportive if you learn how to adjust them properly. As for the seat heaters, even our 81 DL had a heated driver's seat. It was thermostatically controlled to come on automatically when the interior was below 40 degrees.
Air conditioning was not factory installed on the 240 until 1991. That was a dealer installed option. Same with either of the available tachometers. There was a large one that replaced the clock as well as a small one that would fit in place of one of the squares beside the radio. There was a small clock offered if a large tach was installed. There was also a selection of available gauges to fill the spaces. A single bezel was available to replace either or both of the blanks as well as a triple bezel that replaced the radio. In that case, the radio would move down to the bottom cubby.
The rear fog lamp switch is meant to be in that hole in the panel above the headlamp switch.
The looks are a personal thing, but to me, the reason they look good is that the proportions are spot on. It is a balanced design. That balance extends to the weight distribution, being 51/49. Load the car fully, and changes to 49/51, so the handling remains unchanged. With the back seat folded, there is a 7 foot loaded with a flat floor that can carry 76.6 cubic feet, which is more than a new V90.
The colour of that one is Ice Blue, same as mine. Before worrying about changing the engine, fix the rust. That rust in the rear is repairable now, but another few years, and it will mean a full restoration. Also, it is fairly easy to get that one back to performing as it should. A new cat cost me less than $300 Canadian, installed and 13% sales tax in. An O² sensor is cheap and can be installed with the new cat. Once that is done, make sure the timing belt is right, good plugs are in, and then make the old thing WORK. It needs an Italian tune up! It just might surprise you.
