On old singers there’s a tab on the bottom of the tension assembly where where you do need to press that tab to loosen the tension discs. Note, on old singers when you lift the presser foot does not loosen the tension discs also singer stopped the manual loosening in somewhere in the early 1900s.
I need the check spring, the slide plate , id love to find an extra shuttle ( I need to try one of my 27 shuttles in it because they look to be identical) and I want to find an original top to replace the crude one I made (my cutouts to fit the machine are pretty crude)
Too bad you are far away, I think in the states. I have an extra top with lid, top and drawers. No irons or tilt back post. The proper one for your machine is the set that is called the large logo. Mine would do, but not period correct like for a restoration or conservation. Are you on "treadle-on" I might have already seen your machine.

Very nice and rare singer vs2. This is the second of it's type I have seen world wide, that I have seen pictures of this year. Have you measured the bobbin and compared to the regular vs2/27 bobbins? This one might be a slight bit longer and would be the rare VS165 bobbin. Nice original parts on that including winder , stitch length knob, top nut (welded post cast pour) and 8227 shuttle. I have the end of the manuals for this type from 1889 in poor shape if you need a look. The check spring is hard to find for the vs2, but the newer vs2/27 and 27 will work. I have never seen the cornflower and daisy decals on any vs2 of this early rare type. Very nice to see. Good saving that from repurposing, that is a rare vs2 for sure.

I don't think that vs2 has a thumb depress for the tensioner. There would be a hole just to the top of the tension disks if there was one though. I would love to find out the patent date off the front missing bobbin plate for sure. There are 3 types of vs2 that have the cast iron face plate. One is square like the singer 12 was, one has cut corners making it look octagon cut at the edge and the one you have with rounded corners. The shuttle is the same size as the 8327 shuttle the newer 27 has with the "wasp waist" The bobbin might be a bit longer then the 27 bobbin slightly. My 1886 vs has the auto winder and needs the longer bobbin to wind correctly. I have never seen the cornflower and daisy decals on a vs2 either I forgot to add. I was also wondering if the thread check access cover is the same shape as the 27 you have?

I'll get some comparison shots of the differences between this machine on one of my old 27's , the shuttle is the same length side by side, but the 27 shuttle will not fit in the machine .....I'll get some side by side pics ...also of the tensioner , and the winder (which has no auto function) .....will post a video of that soon .....I did find a few pics of the identical machine will add those as well (serial numbers are very close)

What I am wondering with the bobbin is if they still were using the vs165 bobbin from the factory still in 1887. Are you missing the attaching screw for the bobbin winder as well? The regular 27 long bobbin should wind in the older winder, but not correct with the automatic one from 1886. I really should figure out how to make a good video for youtube, but have another project going for ISMACS right now, showing how the 27 long bobbin winds in the 1886 auto winder. They are not all the same. Did I ever send a link to the pictures I have of my machines? I have a lot more to take now and more to post to flickr. I have the "letter a" machine manual that the Smithsonian doesn't even have. I still have to put up the 1895 style 12 puzzle tin box not found on the net at all. Seems to be made by Greist, but labeled singer. The more info I can put out, the more rare machines might be saved. I am sure the machine head you got was destined for recycle or the upcycle craze. The large logo irons are probably a sink or table base now, such a shame.

She's wonderful! What is her model number? I have one of her and know she is rare because she is a variant of VS1 and VS2. I like how she looks in your homemade treadle top. Any help is appreciated.
You just can't beat these old machines. You see one without the base, you know someone ditched the machine to keep the base for a table or some such. Makes me sad. Then there's silks who want to get into sewing and go purchase a low end machine that will probably put a damper on that urge to sew.
I love your table idea! I had an old abandoned cabinet top & cut a fiddle base hole in it so that my machine just like yours can go on top of any cabinet. Have you tried the aquarium tubing yet? I buy it for $4.99 at the pet store and it does not slip.
