  • The singer 31-15 is an early industrial machine, primarily intended for garment construction. I am using mine to do free motion quilting

    Tim, I messaged you the other day asking about the needles you used because I was trying to get my 31-15 going. It is working now, thank you! I absolutely love watching you fmq, I really do. I have a longarm, but due to two shoulder and two back surgeries it is really hard to stand and move the longarm machine around. Now that my treadle 31 is going I am ecstatic - thanks for the info you provided!

    I really like my 31-15 for FMQ. Since I don't use it for anything else, I removed the feed dogs and bought a needleplate without the feed dog slots.

      good idea ! I have another one that still needs a bit of work. I might try that ....then I switch machines out for whatever I am working on

      Nancy, where did you find the needle plate? I tried quilting on my 31-15 w/o the feeddogs and it wouldn't work. Maybe I just needed a different plate. I was thinking of dropping the height of the feeddogs but so far, with stitch length to zero, it's doing ok.

    I have put shrink wrap over the clips which meet the needle bar to cut down on the noise for my free motion feet.

    I would love to have a 31-15 but can't find 1 can afford on Soc.Sec. but may find 1 someday. Would love to quilt on it. has such wide space which makes so much easier. Plus would have to make my table like you did.

    Tim
    Does treadling on your 31-15 take more foot pressure than using your other treadles? I wonder if you get more easily fatigued due to the heavier size of the 31-15 .
    Thanks DR

    Hi! Can you sew thicler blankets with this mashine? I have antique normal Singers and other nice brnds- 5 with handkrank but not an industrial one. I wanted to buy a Juki- so expencive in Austria because of shipping costs and taxes- so i'm looking for an other solution. Most problem is the plate, which cannot sink for fmq...thank you for this informative video❤

    Good morning Tim, I really enjoy your videos, and your quilting is truly mesmerizing!
    I have numerous treadles, I have tried original leather treadle belts, I have tried the spring belts from McMaster Carr, and I have seen the larger diameter cross section belts for my own 31-15, each have attributes that are unique. My 31-15 has a clutch motor that gets it zinging along at super sonic speed. I'm looking to convert it to a treadle as well.
    I have a question about your set-up with this 31-15. What size and type of belt are you using?
    Would you happen to have the measurements of the treadle base?

      right now I have a metal spring belt on it (I actually prefer leather but I had the spring belt on hand and it fit but I might change it out for leather. the treadle base is 26.5" wide , 19" deep x 28" tall , the wheel is larger than a normal home singer treadle as well, it is 14" and a normal treadle is usually 12"

    Tim where do you get this Teflon mat? Does this work better to slide fabric?

    Tim what size treadle did you get for your 31-15? I am looking for 1 and want to make sure I get the right 1 since money is tight on Soc. Sec. and money is tight.

      TheLightbright01 I’ve noticed that the industrial treadles have a wider base, about 4” wider. Look for two horizontal bars to the right of the foot pedal before the base of the pitman rod, ie between the pedal plate and the pitman rod. It you see them it’s wide enough for an industrial machine. The drive wheel may also be larger, but not necessarily- depends on what the original machine was meant to do. You’ll also need a table top with longer hole to take the larger machine head.

    I just bought a 1921 31-15. Everything seems to be working fine but the catch isn't grabbing the thread. I am assuming it's a timing issue that I will have to tinker with. Do you have this issue with your 31-15?
    Also what needles do you use with yours?

    Tim, in one of your videos you said you always wash your quilts. But I'm not sure if you wash the quilt before or after you sew on the binding? I would appreciate your advice. Thank you, -corey-

    • @TimLatimerquilts
      @TimLatimerquilts  7 років тому

      I usually wash after binding, If it a quilt I will use in a show I will sometimes bind after washing because that way the edges will be perfectly straight

    Where do you find your treadle bases? I have a Singer 66 and others that I'd like to treadle with but cannot locate a good supplier. Your treadle table looks great. Great videos too. Mark in Colorado.

      @TimLatimerquilts  6 років тому

      They aren't easy to find in my area, I look for them mostly on Ebay...sometimes the shipping costs more than the base :(

      Thank you for the reply. I did locate and purchase a Singer 15-88 treadle machine a couple of weeks ago. I asked the lady about its history and she said it was her Grandmother's in Oklahoma. Their house burned down and the family had to live in the chicken coop. Neighbors donated items to help them get back on their feet and rebuild their house. The machine and treadle was one of the donated items. That was back in 1938. The machine was commissioned in 1935. So for a neighbor to donate an expensive item like that tells us how close they were, as sewing machines were very expensive. I am restoring the Singer 15-88 as it has some rust and a lot of dirt. I look forward to treadling and learning this new skill. No vo-tech schools here, but I am grateful for your reply. Take care and I'll keep watching your wonderful videos. Sincerely, Mark in Colorado.

    Nice machine!! Knee lift on that as well. I though all the hype on the ruler foot was that it is clear and easier to see. Never thought about hoping being an issue. I have a 89294 darning needle bar clamp attachment that doesn't hop as much. I have never tried one like you were using. Everyone has been telling me to try one of the singer 31-15's out. Way to tempting with this video lol.

    • @TimLatimerquilts
      @TimLatimerquilts  7 років тому

      LOL......I fell to the temptation , I had also been told I should try one. so fa I am a fan. I have seen a few clear ruler feet that do no hopping at all so I might give one a try. Somewhere I have a high shank necchi darning foot to try as well but I can not find it anywhere . I still need to get the knee lift attached to this one , I just need to mark and drill the holes on the bottom of the table to attach it
