We tried climbing West Spanish Peak a couple of weeks ago, but the weather changed rather quickly. I love the area, especially the views and the fact pay off my family is from that area. I know one of the dikes is called The Devils Staircase and I can't remember the other. Have you been gone up the Wahatoya Trail in that area? It's another with beautiful views. Definitely take bear spray and highly recommend a 4 wheel drive on power of the road to get to the head

I had actually planned on camping at the Wahatoya trailhead after completing this hike and doing East Spanish Peak the next day, but I ended up driving home. Given that my car broke down, I guess it was for the best, since my car could have broken down on the rough 4WD road with little signal, which would have made the whole saga 100x worse. I’m hoping I can maybe hike it next year after my ankle is fully healed!

Cool video, just left Philmont and saw these mountains in the distance. Have you ever climbed Little Costilla?

I have, and there's a video of it on my channel! One of my favorite NM mountains.

Really cool peak. Beautiful views from the top. The volcanic formations were really cool! Sorry about the jeep! What's the final verdict? Able to get it fixed?

The volcanic formations were even cooler up close, I wish I had gotten some video on the drive, but I'm sure nobody wants to see life pass by through my dirty windshield.
Final verdict was a bearing failure that caused the belt to break. Thankfully nothing too damaging, but a big pain driving to and from Raton!
