I play this one EVERY Halloween. Rich has played it in the set of almost every one of the innumerable (I lost count at this point!) live shows of his I've attended. SOOO glad he decided to tour again this year!
I love this song. Richard sang it for me when I called it out at a house concert. Dave Nachmanoff had sung it for me earlier that year. Twice in a year - how amazing. I sing the chorus when drivers tail gate me and then overtake. It is my way of keeping calm.
Love this song. Just prompted to check it out on You Tube as it's Halloween. Richard sang it for me as a request a couple of years ago. I was thrilled. Chatted with him afterwards - lovely guy.
Heard this years ago on my car radio in a snowstorm driving toward Toronto. Had to pull over in Falconer, NY because my car was spinning off the road every minute or so. This was way before easy internet and so I just sang it to myself over and over in my motel room. Thank you so much for posting.
YES! I am happy now! Sounds so different live....still good love this guy. On the recording he sound like Luka Bloom...when I first heard him I though he was an Irish Balladeer.
I LOVE that this happened this way because I just screwed the words up to one of my songs on a tv thing and I felt like absolute crap...I LOVE that someone that I just ADORE screws his words up live...it's heartening...he's human...we're all human :D :D :D
Great song, always yields a smile. Interesting to read also that Mr.Shindell has worked with Antje Duvekot, another very talented songwriter and performer.
i first heard this song on a sampler cd from oasis - not a dj or booker, but they sent it to me since one of my songs was on it- I loved it the first time i heard it, still have it in rotation on my cd jukebox. as a fellow songwriter and out of the closet banjo player - (come on out brother !) - just cuz it didn't happen doesn't mean it isn't true.
I always loved this song as one of the better "bitter anthems" out there, but didn't realize quite how funny it was till I heard Richard's explanation of the real story behind the song. Make sure to listen through to the end for it. :)
If it is any consolation, he was amazing last night. Great interaction with the audience and he is a funny guy in addition to being a wonderful guitarist, writer, and performer. 3eb4me, hopefully it won't be another 5 or 6 years before he returns but when he does, do not delay in getting your tickets. They sold out very quickly for a 425 seat auditorium.
hahaaa brnc15 what a sweetheart he's got a nice coice indeed i saw that you put this song by your favz so i thougt aaah check it ouuttt whahaa kuzzzjess schad
I've seen him live in Humboldt County twice: once alone and once opening for Joan Baez. Baez sang his anti-war song "Arrowhead" anointing the song as the greatest anti-war song she has ever performed. So aside from break-up revenge songs, he writes some great stuff.

"What comes out grey is really red." Priceless.

Thank you Richard for this song.
Oh my, what poetry and melody...how I wish he could be as celebrated as the "superstars" who can't "hold a candle" to Richard!!!
