"Dreamed a dream I will not tell"... This tender and intimate expression by a wife for her long lost soldier - husband is so poignant. Richard's ability to give true voice to so many different "people" is, for me, absolutely amazing and wonderful. From the courrier to the illegal immigrant to this civil war widow, they all come to life through his imagination.
This was one of the first songs I showed to my girlfriend now wife, we have been together for over 8 years now, I have loved this song for over 14 years.
Must've been in late September When last I climbed Reunion Hill I fell asleep on Indian Boulder And dreamed a dream I will not tell I came home as the sun went down One eye trained upon the ground Even now I find their things Glasses, coins, and golden rings It's ten years since that ragged army Limped across these fields of mine I gave them bread, I gave them brandy Most of all, I gave them time My well is deep, the water pure My streams are fed by mountain lakes I cleaned the brow of many a soldier Dousing for my husband's face I won't forget our sad farewell And how I ran to climb that hill Just to watch him walk across the valley And disappear into the trees Alone there in a sea of blue It circles every afternoon A single hawk in God's great sky Looking down with God's own eyes He soars above Reunion Hill I pray he spiral higher still As if from such an altitude He might just keep my love in view Must've been in late September When last I climbed Reunion Hill
A sad and beautiful song from somewhere deep in Shindell. It’s a heartbreaking story; his singing becomes a kind of keening. For me, the definitive performance.
Richard Shindell wrote so many amazing songs. Joan Baez does a cover of this song and "the Fisherman" but I like his originals best. I think I heard that he and John Gorka played together in college in their own band. Imagine the talent in that group!!
Hi I visit your channel after listenig to the cover of Reunion Hill that was performed on you tube by Mark Wilderspin and Alex West... They did a great job and now I hear the original....very beautiful!!! Peace Love Mary A
A lament that is comparable to the great "The night they drove old Dixie down" and many many similar Irish ballads of unending defeat against overpowering forces.
This is such a achingly beautiful song… thank you Richard for sharing it with us and with Joan. You both do it such justice!!! Listening in 2024🎶❤️🍂
Performed at Six Strings in Columbus OH. Byron Isaacs on bass. Myself on violin. A charmed tour, and one of my fondest memories.
Beautiful playing from you too Tracy. Bless you. xx
@@stevechanning497 Oh thank you!

Makes me want to weep every time I listen to it. A song for every generation of women who mourn a husband, son, father or friend. A unique talent.
My new fave Shindell tune....not surprised he considers this his best.
What a treat to watch Shindell perform this masterpiece of songwriting. Thanks for that! Slow and sweet it is, indeed...
Friggin' spectacular, no other word for it.

Must've been in late September
When last I climbed Reunion Hill
I fell asleep on Indian Boulder
And dreamed a dream I will not tell
I came home as the sun went down
One eye trained upon the ground
Even now I find their things
Glasses, coins, and golden rings
It's ten years since that ragged army
Limped across these fields of mine
I gave them bread, I gave them brandy
Most of all, I gave them time
My well is deep, the water pure
My streams are fed by mountain lakes
I cleaned the brow of many a soldier
Dousing for my husband's face
I won't forget our sad farewell
And how I ran to climb that hill
Just to watch him walk across the valley
And disappear into the trees
Alone there in a sea of blue
It circles every afternoon
A single hawk in God's great sky
Looking down with God's own eyes
He soars above Reunion Hill
I pray he spiral higher still
As if from such an altitude
He might just keep my love in view
Must've been in late September
When last I climbed Reunion Hill
I saw RS at Madison Square Park in NYC a few years ago. He was outstanding, and Reunion Hill is one of my all-time favorites.
This is possibly Richard's most beautiful song.
Richard closed with this when I saw him in Atlanta at the Red Light Cafe. Absolutely beautiful...
