I don't know if you'll see this as I'm watching the replay.
There is no discrepancy in the number of people in the party. William and his "two companions" left to go get supplies (provisions) at Ronceverte. This is where the first newspaper article started. After getting what they needed, the other men and their dog joined them for the return trip. That's what I get from the two stories and analyzing the timeline.
Ronceverte is about 21 miles ESE of Cold Knob on the Greenbrier River at Lewisburg. In the mid-1800's it was a major port on the river. Distances are a little problematic. The South Fork Cherry River winds from the east, merges with the Cold Knob River where it turns north and goes up near Richwood which you showed on the map. Cold Knob is roughly halfway from Ronceverte to Richwood and would have been a good place to camp at a place called Low Gap between Cold Knob Mountain and Cold Knob Overlook.
I won't go on, but I hope this is enlightening. Military training rears its head 😎

And Kevin, this is why I LOVE folks sharing in the writing challenge. Collaborating together can help make the story make sense. Thanks for your contribution and I'll be sure to let Jenni know your thoughts. I hope you'll watch again. Today's live stream has a military story. I'll admit to a desire to learn. So bring on the comments!
