I am a farmer and don't have any issues with the pollution stuff on my trucks. You gotta actually work the truck, you know carry a heavy load? Which most of you city slicker wanta be farmers don't do.. Work it hard and the pollution stuff doesn't clog up... You paid $1000 for an oil change and four filters? Maybe you outa learn to do it yourself.

The diesel shop that I went to said that 50% or more of all the diesel truck repairs that come into their shop are emissions related with an average cost of repair is around $4000.
He also mentioned that the extended warranty usually doesn’t cover those problems
You don’t mind paying an extra $25,000 for a truck that is less capable and breaks down more often? And you think me paying an extra hundred dollars for the oil change is the problem
At that rate, I could get 250 oil changes before I’ve covered the cost of the emissions garbage
Plus, you’re buying DEF fluid. That is a continuous ongoing cost the entire time you have the truck.
The DEF cost more than my oil change
The mechanic said that his cost for my oil and fuel filters is $300 so it’s not out of line for the dealership to charge me $400.
That extra hundred dollars is not the problem here
All of this to put in place regulations that don’t even help the environment. It’s been proven that the exhaust is no cleaner.
They are levying a heavy tax on you to win, social agenda, brownie points, among city dwelling millennials, and you seem to be OK with it

@@RockhillfarmYT as a diesel mechanic of 25 years, you are not wrong. I saw this all coming in 2004 and it has all gotten worse. While you may have a little less issue working a truck and not idling it, you still shouldn’t have to deal with it at all. They went after the diesel engine because they knew the transportation industry would have to pay for it because it’s a necessity. No other industry or consumer could pay more for a truck or piece of equipment with less reliability, longer downtime and reduced engine/component life. Then they have the time and man power to hunt people down in the majority of the locations that don’t even have emissions standards or inspections on diesels and take them to jail or put them out of business. Sad we all let I happen.

@johndeerfarmer4483 I'm not sure if you understood the purpose of the video.
The whole you don't work your truck hard enough is why you have issues is talking out of your rear.
As for the price of parts, as a Diesel mechanic for a lot of years diesel parts have always been historically more expensive than gas engines.
In this day in age, they can charge almost whatever they want because your truck "has" to have these emissions parts to run and not break the law.
Like Brock said this is just an unnecessary cost to all of the working people around the country.
Sorry, all of us city slickers can't understand how were supposed to do things.
      Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I was highly entertained by his comment, as I not 15 minutes prior drove past my local small town diner and saw the farm truck 2500 and 3500's lined up having lunch. Those fellas were going balls to the walls working those rigs!
And the same at church on Sunday or in the parking lot of the local ag store. If you want to be real about it, the trade guys pulling enclosed trailers are working their diesels daily, not many farmers are using their trucks for daily or even monthly heavy hauling. So give those slickers a call and they can come build a podium for you to give your next sermon.
Drive what and how you want for whatever reason you want. The point is, more money doesn't equate to better quality anymore. John Deere included!!!!!

      I agree. I’m anything but a city slicker. I won’t even visit a city unless I don’t have a choice.
On average, I pull a heavy load probably two or three month which might be more than a lot of farmers, but some are pulling heavy loads a lot. It all varies.
I think the construction and Excavating are really working the rigs hard
What I didn’t get was how condescending the comment is. Making it personal about me when I’m talking about the price of trucks

I know a lot of people don't want to talk politics because it's a touchy subject. But I have set back and watched while the dumbest of us have destroyed and continue to destroy this country. I'm to the point now where I feel like the country I love needs more people, especially people who have a platform to actually speak up and tell people that have their heads in the sand the truth. The truth is we need to get this administration out and put a group of people together that actually cares about this country and its people and not about making themselves rich. There should never be a person in government who makes $175,000.00 a year and after serving a few years leaves a multimillionaire. That's corrupt and it seems like everyone in government does it. Sorry for the rant but as I said I don't care if people get butt hurt over the truth anymore.

Speaking from experience, I had a trucking business that I sold in 2020. 34 years as a contractor for FedEx Ground with a fleet of 50-plus trucks. The last ten years of our business were the hardest because of emissions on our trucks. We started in 87 when the trucks would pull and the repairs were not astronomical. If you think a pickup is expensive, try buying a new Def filter for a Detroit that is 12 thousand dollars. Multiply that by 50 if all your trucks need one. The other problem is the fact that the big diesel engines of today don't last as long. I had some older trucks that we inframed and got over 2 million miles on the engine. You're lucky if you get 800k out of a big truck today. I'll get political with you, let's get smart and put the administration back in that had our diesel fuel at $2 a gallon and rescinded some of these crazy emissions. Y'all know what I'm saying so put your vote to work wisely this fall.

To me, the most absurd part of the emission control systems is the fact that hundreds of thousands of those $20,000 systems have to be manufactured. Then they have to be transported to the factories. Then there’s an entire industry that produces DEF fluid. And that also has to be transported. Think about the amount of diesel fuel burned and extra emissions, caused by the manufacturing and transport of all of that crap. Plus, the emission systems make your truck less fuel efficient, thereby also burning more diesel. Then you have fuel tanker trucks also burning more diesel to haul all that fuel to the stations at an increased rate…
It’s mind blowing how stupid it all is

Brock I was dead set on Diesels and thought I would never own a gas pickup. I went back to gas as the EPA has destroyed Diesel. 3 years ago I kept having problems with my Diesel. It kept derating and was at dealer for 3 weeks and they were throwing parts at it and couldn't get it fixed. I went Gas 3500 and haven't regretted it one bit. Have buddies that thought I was crazy but My truck is still pulling and theirs is in the shop. Oh and by the way 2 have them have went back to gas. Maintenance cost is lower and I can buy a lot of gas for $10K. Sure it don't pull as hard as my diesel did, but ya know at this age I am not in as big of a hurry anymore .

I did 1 tandem grain truck , 2 large tractors , 1 self propelled field sprayer , my Silverado 1/2 t , my wife’s Buick La crosse , 1 grain auger engine,1 three ton water hauling truck, and a rider mower . Total for filters and oil only works out to just under 2200 bucks, and we have to do it, each spring. My only salvation to all this is, I use all the waste crank case oil , to heat my shop all year, and the oil filters get drained and hauled to the scrap dealer for a little cash!

Brock, you are again right on the mark with this synopsis of diesel pickup trucks. There is an influx of people going back to gas engines in pickups because of everything you just described. Sometimes we are our own worst enemies by paying for these well optioned quad cabbed pickups. This is the reason I bought a big gas engined Ford F350 XL STX regular cab truck back in 2020 right at the begining of covid, with the simple bare necessities. It will pull my 15K lb dump trailer around albeit not like a diesel will, but I get there a minute or two after you. When was the last time you loaded up that quad cab with six people and went to pickup or move a piece of equipment? Fact of the matter there are so many vehicles out there with so much extra stuff on them that we absolutely do not need and are just irritations to have in the first place if you ask me. Unless you are touring the US with the Mrs. everyday with an RV fifth wheel for the next year and a half why do you really need the diesel pickup? We have been hood winked by the big three with 1000ftlb torque engines and high off the lot retail prices and cost prohibited service costs.

They are buying used day cab trucks with a single axle (like from XPO Logistics) and modifying them for pulling a gooseneck. These day cabs aren't good for daily OTR use anymore, but for the average small farmer or horse person like myself, they are perfect for haulin' horses around 15 or 20 weekends a year. Do they have all the creature comforts of an HD pickup? No. But it ain't yer daily driver... lol! Be patient and you can get one in good shape for under 10 grand. I remember when carburetors would have issues trying to start after the engine was hot (vapor lock), my '80 car had electronic ignition and some folks couldn't start in the rain, thankfully those basic computer controlled issues got resolved and engines DID get more reliable, but the last 10-15 years with emission standards (thanks California) have really turned the reliability and costs in the wrong direction. The drive to EV is also behind this, folks just don't seem to get that BUILDING batteries/new EV factories/building new EV vehicles/expanding power distribution systems NEGATES the point/savings of having an EV - which still needs to be charged by the grid, and the battery doesn't last forever, and it's not "ecologically better" to mine lithium vs. fossil fuel. So, I'll keep my 1999 thru 2005 vehicles and fix (nearly) everything myself and buy gas/diesel and use wood for heat as much as possible.

Brock, in my opinion, a lot of the inflammatory pricing on all fossil fuel based vehicles is a result of R&D recoupment as well as manufacturing cost recovery related to forced electric vehicle production. Which they have to do in order to meet EPA guidelines at the manufacturer level. These stipulate a manufacturer has to hit an average MPG of all vehicles they make, and the only way they can meet that is through EV production. Problem is there is little to no demand for EVs. So, they're making fewer gas/diesel vehicles because if they make too many they won't hit their regulatory mandates, but they're not selling the inventory of EV cars that they are forced to produce in order to meet those mandates. This all will result in any fossil fuel based vehicle to become a 6-figure purchase, while we will only see EV prices falling year over year. Eventually, consumers will buy EVs simply because they cannot afford gas/diesel vehicles - not, necessarily, because they want them.

part of the reason i went with a l2501 instead of a slight step up was anything higher had dpf and i just wanted a simpler machine. my brother has a older skid so if i need something bigger i can borrow that and i just take smaller sections of logs and its does what i need but its bullshit that tractors at over 25hp need that kind of regulation for a homeowner who isn't putting a crazy number of hours. if i remember construction stuff isn't until 90hp it gets restrictions and that would run a ton of hours compared to a compact tractor i would prefer none of it for anybody but it really confuses me why they want to interfere with compact tractors when it just mainly people who want to maintain their properties.

I have a 2018 ram and when it hit 60k my def failed and my tranny went out. Warranty said they don’t have to cover it. So I said crew it. I’m deleting. Best thing I’ve done. I deleted and tuned it myself. If you’re a basic mechanic, you can easily do it. Takes about 4 hours

I’ve had 3 Chevy Duramax diesels 2005, 2008 now 2016 everyone I put over 250,000 miles on never once changed transmission filter or oil on the 08 or on the 2005 2016 I’ve changed transmission filter once but not the oil. I even run the regular engine oil around 10 to 12,000 miles until new change. So do we really need to spend this extra money on all these filters and oil changes and transmission fluid changes?? What do you think?

In mid 2020 I was looking to replace my 2004 pickup with a used F-250 and the prices were jacked up. Inventory in Virginia was low so, I changed up and bought a new Truck. Inventories were also low, Dodge didn't have a diesel for sale in Virginia, not one! Chevy wanted a $10,000 Community Fee so I looked at Ford, limited inventory andmore than I needed but I had to have diesel, it's no contest when hauling. I just moved 4 tons of gravel in my F-250, it purred home not one scream like a gas engine would.
The DEF and Emissions is tyranny, the FEDS do stuff like this in every business sector these days. In transportation it's emissions control and NO Standards just new unproven regulations!

I changed that same filter on my ram at 68k miles. East to do. You could save yourself a lot of money doing all your own oil changes and fuel filter changes. Change your fuel filters every 10k miles. Not necessary to do them every 5k. Look on rock auto for all your filters. Save your self a lot of money there too.

I actually found a loaded 2006 2500hd CCSB LBZ all stock with 142kmi in 2020 and I've had zero serious issues with it except I took the cooling stack out for cleaning and swapped transmission cooler lines for rubber upgrade. I wouldn't buy a newer model truck for any reason just because of all the bs in them totally unrelated to emissions and I do all my own maintenance, and repair what I can which is most things. I get your frustration but coming down hard on diesel emissions has been a good thing for air quality. I only use my truck for towing or truck stuff so it should get me well past 250kmi. Maybe I'll be able to cash in on the fear mongering in a few years after a legit hybrid gas/electric truck is available.

My truck cost $66k and i am absolutely blown away by the maintenance costs and emissions crap that goes on. And when you do the filter changes yourself you risk not doing it to spec and voiding the warranty if anything gies wrong.
I passed $75k a few months back went to tge dealers to have both fuel filter changed again and the otger 2 filters he mentioned they quoted me $940 and thats insane but they trued charging me $1440 for 2 hours of work that was just normal maintenance nothing broken. Freaking insane. I am going to keep this truck for a long time delete it and do my own maintenance at the farm. These regulations have made me a pretty strong anti environmentalist. We really really need to work together to drastically push back agaist these regulations, most viters just think yeah who doesnt want clean air regulate more but we are the ones that keep the food, energy, construction and trucking going. Without us the fine folks at EPA will be cold and hungry and have to walk to work and grow their own food...

The emissions have warranties. If you can’t afford to repair it out of warranty then buy an older diesel or newer gas. I understand both sides being a former full time CDL driver myself. I rented a epa diesel skid steer and was very impressed with the clean exhaust and almost no smell. After working it hard for 12 hrs and breathing in the exhaust most of the time it had no effect on me. There was absolutely zero soot on the inside of the tailpipe on that turbo yanmar. I have become chemical sensitive over my like of being poisoned in the Army and driving trucks from the exhaust etc. that the smell and exposure have an immediate negative effect on my body. In the past I could withstand any exposure to fumes or chemicals with no response. Now one whiff of noxious fumes will give me an immediate headache and other I’ll effects.

Basically I am saying that we have known about the problems the emissions has put on diesels for a solid 20 years now. And when something breaks emissions related we have all been warned a thousand times already. I would still be mad but it is how it is to be expected and to be prepared for in the budget for future repairs if you “want” a newer diesel truck. If you “need” a newer diesel truck then what businesses do is up the charges to their customers and save for future out of warranty repairs or else they don’t operate a business they operate a hobby. One makes money and another is for enjoyment.

I think either your vehicle is poorly designed or your dealer is ripping you off. I have a 2015 F350 and my regular oil change at 10k is around $130/170 with fuel filters, my 100K was $750 and included coolant, transmission, gear, oil, and multiple filter changes all done at the dealer. My DEF filter isn't changed until 250k, but there was a recall and I had it changed at 110k, so now it will be 360k before changing again. The cost of meeting 2010 diesel standards averaged $1,000 in 2010, $2,800 per vehicle in 2024. That's includes big rigs.

  • @charlesperry1051

I have a 2011 F250 with the 6.7L turbo diesel. Due to a Ford screw up, I ended up with a new DPF at 100k miles, about 3 years ago. I came very close to deleting my truck last year. BUT, I decided I wanted to buy one more new truck. With the EPA crack downs, Ford dealers will not touch a deleted truck. So I kept it stock and will buy a new truck this year, likely my last. My issue with the emissions crap is the impact on reliability. I tow a heavy trailer. If ANYTHING with the emissions goes wrong, you are in limp mode and cannot tow. Ridiculous.

  • @Tcw2019

The emissions standards set on our trucks are insane. My truck gets less mileage, less lifespan, and has had so much wasted driving just for regens. (When it had that crap on it) EGR’s are so bad for the motor. What really floors me is they now have additional factories for this stuff, additional trucks shipping it everywhere. Do you think that’s flown across the ocean on emission compliant planes or boats? No they have none. How about all the private jets that celebrities get to fly around on for fun? Taylor swift got to fly around for every football game on an emissions free jet which was probably more emissions than half the trucks in the country. The military and government must use them right? No, because it makes the vehicle unreliable. If they warrantied all of this stuff for 200k that may be a different story or atleast got rid of egrs that would help. I just did a ccv reroute on my 6.7 powerstroke the other day for the same reason

The new trucks are more capable, and some will argue better looking and more comfortable. I've had my current truck ('07 Ram 5.9) since 2011 when i purchased it used for not that much cheaper than a new rig with the 6.7. Only because i was a little skeptical about the new fangled emissions system. Many times throughout the years, I've considered swapping to a newer rig. I have never gone through with it and count my blessings when i hear stories about all the emissioned problems and costs. Fortunately, for me, the way i haul and use my truck, i can deal with the lower power (slower😊) and tow capacity. I feel for the guys who have heavier tow requirements and must use a newer, more complicated, restricted, and more powerful setup. Like everyone else predicts, i, too, think it's only going to get worse. Unfortunately.

  • @bearkatljl

The problem with all these regulations are being put in place by people who are not directly effected by them, I agree that we are all paying more for the good delivered by trucks with these emissions but we don't notice it because we just pay "X" amount for what ever product we buy and we don't see a line item that reads "fee for emissions on my truck". Further more I dare say none of the people maknig the rules are driving around in Powerstrokes, Duramaxes, or Ram/Cummins. Yes we could buy a gasoline truck but it's not nearly as effcient as diesel nor is it as powerful. It has been my experience that the best way to screw something up is to allow the government to "regulate" it. I am old enough to remember when Chrysler introduced the Cummins and most of the cowmen/farmers couldn't get their money out of their pockets fast enough because they were used to having big block 454's and 460's in their duallies that got all of 8mpg and the Cummins would double that when loaded and I know several people who got over 20mpg when unloaded. Then the government decided it was "here to help". As a steward of the land and the environment I say that there is no way that having all these emmisions is "helping" the environment after you consider the cost of the research, the cost of the manufacturing of the components, the cost of the 2.5 gallon jugs and the cardboard boxes, not to mention the diesel that's being burned during a "parked regen" there is no way this is better for the environmet. Ultimitely, the people whom we are electing to office are so out of touch with regular people they believe they can do whatever they want and we have to take it.
