    Funny story : I'm 18 weeks pregnant. At my first midwife appointment she asked me about my diet. I mentioned i was vegan. She asked if i was a proper vegan. I said yes. She said 'Brilliant, that means i don't have to give you a long list of foods to avoid'

      Just to let you know you can still call yourself vegan and keeping being vegan even if you eat an animal product every here and there due to a craving or by accident. there are no hard lines, it takes time to fully avoid animal products, esp. in this culture.

    I have an 8 month old baby girl and a 2 year old girl toddler. I wasn't vegan for the first pregnancy and had gestational diabetes and my baby was only 6.11lbs even though I gained 35lbs total. With my second pregnancy my baby was 8.7lbs and I only gained 17 lbs and was vegan. I got a lot of unwanted comments and "concerns" about my choice to be vegan while pregnant and raise my kids vegan but people will try to criticize your parenting skills no matter what you do. I'm happy with my choices. Have been a vegan now for 1.5 years and my daughters are vegan as well.

      Carlos Trevino No I did not have gd the second time. Once I cut out all animal products, it went away. I was also eating a very healthy diet with only coconut sugar and and no processed foods. I ate a lot of rice and beans, bananas, quinoa and raw vegetables.

    I left a comment about this on your last pregnancy video. My first pregnancy I was on a standard western diet, including the "nourishing traditions diet second trimester. Had swollen feet throughout, excessive weight gain, difficulty getting around, and ended up having my little boy a week overdue via c-section due to failure to descend. This last pregnancy I felt normal up until my final week when I could not continue to work (I'm a massage therapist btw). I gave birth naturally ON MY DUE DATE, had a vaginal delivery, felt like I was back to normal in about a week, went back to work after 3 weeks, oh and to top it all off my milk production enabled me to store enough extra breastmilk to fill a quarter of my entire freezer. Last pregnancy it took so long to come in my little boy began to develop jaundice, I had to supplement right from the beginning and I dried up after a few months

    I got so upset at the hospital I delivered in, because I'm vegan and I am raising my babies vegan. So, at the hospital right after my baby was born they took him to the nursery and immediately bottle fed him cow milk formula without even consulting me about it first. I was able to breastfeed, but they didn't even give me the chance, and kept my baby in the nursery for 24 hours, so I didn't even get to spend time with him or feed him properly for the first 24 hours of life. The nurses kept saying, "well he needs to eat. This cow milk formula is all we have" but they didn't even let me breastfeed. I've never felt so disrespected in my entire life. My baby is now 4 months old and he breast feeds and supplements sometimes with soy formula. I wish I could go back to that hospital and yell at them for abusing my rights and freedoms, and for not caring about my babies health. This just shows people how uneducated they truly are about how veganism is healthy, or else they would never have gone and done this in the first place.

      SaratoninAvalanche18 Did they do it because they thought he was hungry? Or was his blood sugar low? That happened to my daughter and I had no choice but to give her formula (after they put her on an emergency IV to stabilize her blood sugar). They only allowed me to breastfeed for 10 mins then I had to feed her formula to keep her blood sugar up. Once she was better (it took a week) and she could regulate her own blood sugar herself, we took her home and I have exclusively breastfed her ever since.

      SaratoninAvalanche18 that's why I was a closeted vegan or vegetarian(when I was younger) what I eat and how I care for my family is my business. And I'm so sorry you had to go through that. It kills me that they would do something like that but they'll respect every other mother.

      SaratoninAvalanche18 it never fails to amaze me how ignorant some people are and are able to completely disregard someone else's beliefs just because they're different. I'm so sorry you had to go through that, knowing the complications with milk both ethically and health wise :(

    • @SaratoninAvalanche18
      @SaratoninAvalanche18 7 років тому +62

      There was no reason for him to be supplemented with formula. They even went as far as to forget to feed him while he was in the nursery, which made his blood sugars drop and they made us stay an extra 24 hours because of it. It was terrible. I was served toast for the entire time I was there. Plain toast and a soy milk carton was all they had that was vegan lol 😂
      When we finally got to go home my sister was like, "that's what you get for being vegan. You make everything difficult.".... lol one day it will be the society norm to be vegan and then people won't be so condescending

    • @marianyvega8756
      @marianyvega8756 7 років тому +7

      MsAusarian she probably could have lost her job depending on who dictates your care (normally depends your insurance company). My friend had to have a procedure and instead of putting preventative measures so she wouldn't have to go through all that pain again she was back not even a month after recovering. She was furious but her dad was used to it since everyone takes advantage of government money in anyway they can(he's a vet)

      MsAusarian I am a practice nurse and see ppl with chronic disease every day. I had serous health issues 18 months ago so finally decided to go fully vegan. When I am talking to patients I used to whisper and and say things like "off the record.... you should really ditch the animal products..." I don't now, but proudly say " I was really unwell and have spent the last year researching diet. I have now changed to a fully plant based diet and, along the way, discovered how much a poor diet causes ill health and how a plant based diet can actually massively improve your (diabetes/heart disease or whatever they have)". I find they are much more receptive to that. It's ridiculous that us vegan health professionals have to feel like this...

      I gained weight to when I first went vegan. I got a book called "Eat fat get thin" and diligently fallowed the recipes of the vegan version. After three months I felt like crap and spent most of the time sleeping, my face was breaking out and I practically had to wash my hair twice a day it was so greasy. But the worst part was that at five months I got my bloodwork done like the author suggested, only instead of everything being awesome after five months of eating "healthy" olive oil and coconut oil and not eating carbs and suger and drinking disgusting bulletproof coffee I was worse off then before. My triglycerides were at 195 and my HDL and LDL ratios were bad. My Dr said that I might have fatty liver and insulin resistance because my AST was double the safe limit.
      So I went on the internet and found a video from Highcarbhannah about her 70lb weight loss. She talked about the Starch solution book by a vegan Dr. I did the diet for three months and went from 173lbs to 157lbs I went back for another blood test and my triglycerides had dropped to 107 and my liver enzymes were back in the normal range. I eat the recipes from the starch solution book or stuff from Highcarbhannahs' recipe videos. You should give them a try :)

    I had an argument with my parents yesterday about me being a Vegan. They respect my change and I respect there eating diet , but last week they went for a doctor check up for my sister and my sister asked the doctor what his thoughts are on veganism. He said he doesn't recommend it and my mom is using his word as a way to prove that veganism isn't all that good and that something will happen to me if I continue. So we were talking about it yesterday and my mom kept insisting that the doctor said it so it MUST be true. I told her to watch videos about Veganism with me so I can prove it to her and my dad , but my mom doesn't want to because for no apparent reason because it doesn't support her biased views. My dad said and I quote : "How do you know that these people aren't lying and putting fake stuff out there in the internet" There excuse is that because there are a lies out there in the internet , that must mean the facts on a Vegan lifestyle must be sugar coated or filled with fake facts. So apparently according to them; the debates, the websites, the people who are seeing results . ARE NOT REAL AND COULD BE LYING TO ME. They also said that I won't be man enough for a woman if dropped meat because a plant based diet will mess me up somehow downstairs, even though I've done my research on Veganism. They also said I'd be missing out on certain nutrients and stuff and that I'd be deficient, despite the fact that I've seen the evidence that those are all lies. Lastly my dad said I was just exaggerating by dropping all animal products entirely. I can't believe my own parents deny the proof and evidence out there because one doctor said it wasn't good. I also told them you go to a doctor for MEDICAL ADVICE, and you go to a nutritionist/dietician for NUTRITION advice , but noooo they don't want to learn anything that goes against their beliefs. Talk about biased huh? I think they see veganism as a fad diet and not a lifestyle . I also pointed out that it's cheaper going vegan and there excuse was that "vegetables can contain contamination because the way they process everything". Well there's my little rant so I wish y'all have a good one

    P.S. I have been very lucky. My midwife, pediatrician, friends, family, partner, and partner's family (none of whom are vegan) are all on board with me being vegan and raising my child vegan until at least age 5. So, not everyone is an ignorant moron. Yay for that!

    Pregnant woman are advised not to eat raw meat, fish, milk and cheese. Folic acid levels are not sufficiënt on a non-vegan diet. Children under the age of 1 shouldn't eat honey.

My current and last pregnancy as a vegan I have had pretty low iron (though I know many meat eating women who've had the same issue), I've struggled with iron absorption my whole life though so I don't necessarily link it to being vegan - but every doctor/midwife I see gives me a really hard time about it.

    Vegan for 6 years, I maintained vegan while pregnant and my Midwife loved it. I nursed my 15 month old exclusively for the 1st year, and she still gets her momma milk when she wants it. She is perfectly healthy! I had no issues while pregnant, no clogged ducts when nursing, and my daughter has no issues.
    I also attribute my vegan diet to being able to get pregnant. I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome at 18 and shouldn't have been able to get pregnant naturally.

    It's terrible that most people think cows milk and meat, eggs are healthy. Whenever they ask me i always explain and show videos of how unhealthy it is, but most people's reactions is that it is my opinion and that they won't change. Very shocking. Delivering my vegan baby in December in hospital. My doctor is absolutely fine with my vegan pregnancy, she just did blood tests if the B 12 was good, iron test etc. all is fine. She did sent me to a hospital dietitian, who was very concerned if I got enough calcium and protein and that I would be deficient soon. I watched enough Michael Greger videos and educated myself to know that there has never been a medical case of both calcium and protein deficiency (no, osteoporosis is not a calcium deficiency disease). Beans and greens and a whole food diet is healthy for me and the baby, pregnant woman should have no doubt at all! Just educate yourself about the vitamins and minerals and that you have a sufficient vegan diet for your baby.
