Australia celebrates 50th anniversary of Sydney Opera House

The famed Sydney Opera House in Australia, an architectural marvel that was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973, is offering free tours and a laser show to tens of thousands of people in celebration of its 50th anniversary. In Sydney the first week of June 1973 about five months before it opened, the opera house blew my mind almost as much as the Apollo lunar landing missions had since first landing just after my 13th birthday. In Tehran during the Apollo 17 mission, I was returning to the USA to finish high school and all I saw on the journey home, along with an end to the Vietnam War finally in sight, had thoroughly ramped me up into my first major pinnacle of optimism for the future. The only way it might have been even better would have been getting to see Led Zeppelin at the Showgrounds there (or in Auckland, NZ) the previous year. Never made it to a Led Zeppelin concert and never attended an event at the opera house, but there may still be time to finally do the latter now that my nephew lives in Sydney-as good a reason to return as any.
