Congrats on 10K I’ve been subscribed a while, I didn’t introduce myself initially, depressed introverts are extra shy. I’ve bugged you on Instagram, I’m Alba Malum Feline 02 over there. I mean this in the nicest way: you remind me of my granny; she is a wonderful story teller. Most days she writes a journal entry (the trick to a daily journal is never to try to catch up if you fall behind, just start from today) and sends it out as an email to basically everyone she has ever met. She has long since retired and lives mostly at home so her life isn’t super varied but because she is such a good story teller it’s always nice to read about her plans for the day, often she includes what is essentially the historical version of a recipe: ‘tonight I’m going to spatchcock a chicken, oil and root veg strewn about the pan, shoving garlic cloves and rosemary under the skin and into knife pokes through the beast. I think we’ll have cheesecake for dessert or maybe a danish’. No measurements, no oven temps, and very little in the way of specifics. She just assumes you know how to spatchcock a chicken and that you want to start the potatoes after the carrots if you want super soft carrots or the other way if you want more crisp one and that of course you need onions and could add whole heads of garlic to the pan to cook etc. she isn’t always imparting vast wisdom but it’s pleasant to have her chat at me.
It is pleasant to have you chat at me, the wisdom, experience and sewing inspiration is also lovely when it crops up.

Congrats on 10k! I found your channel through Bernadette, when you were making lady Sherlock and Watson. I hang around sewing channels hoping to some day find enough courage, time and space to try to learn sewing myself. Mainly for every day use, maybe historybounding, not sure yet...
I like watching your videos, to see the behind the scenes kind of thing. It, watching you and other historical sewing, has given me an other understanding of the way clothes can be constructed to function.
So, thank you for sharing, and inspiring!

Congrats on 10k! I thought I would introduce myself. I am a physics teacher and hobby sewist(sp?). I started my downward spiral into historical sewing/costuming when my daughter suggested that I follow Bernadette in 2018. Since then I have truly enjoyed following all of you in the CosTube community. I am also on a journey to lose enough weight to fit into the more historical silhouettes. I have tried to make a corset “from scratch” but I just can’t get that shape. Anyway... Thank you for sharing your journey with us!

Hello! I love physics!! I’m so glad that you enjoy costube! And may I suggest something that sounds crazy to those of us who are always trying to be thinner? The ideal shape is whatever shape you are! I don’t actually corset down at all as my middle isn’t squishy. The clothes do most of the illusion work for you, so it might just be worth making something simple and cotton up just to see. I’m always astounded At how different the clothes make my body look (honestly, it’s most of the reason I do it!!)

@@Costuming_Drama I did not flatline or use tarlatan, I only faced the hem with some crinoline as my tafetta was crisp enough to hold the pleats. It really did hang beautifully. I even made it in tartan for a New Year party and once again I just faced the hem. I realised pretty quickly that the draping at the front would look too stiff if I flatlined, even with thin cotton.

I recently found myself down the costube rabbit hole, although I don’t do historical sewing of my own. I like sewing/quilting/making, and I like history, and nerdy stuffs, but work and life keep me from making all the pretty, non-practical things like Edwardian costumes. So I live vicariously through you, Cathy, Bernadette, Murica, Morgan and the like. All of you have inspired me to take the time to do some hand finishing with the clothing I do make, and appreciate the little touches to step up my game.
I have learned the hard way that getting all your frustrations and hiccups out of the way on a mock-up is WORTH IT. It makes the final make much more enjoyable, and you don’t end up with resentful feelings and the exasperated “get it done” mentality at the end.

    • @Costuming_Drama

Hi Noelle. I am glad that more people are subscribing to your channel as it is refreshing to see unedited (ish) sewing endeavors. It is very encouraging to see people who have been sewing for quite a while still learning, making mistakes and coming against a roadblocks, particularly for someone like me who is still new to sewing.
I believe that you saw the book on undergarments on Redthreaded (hope I spelled it correctly) IG feed. I saved a screenshot from her stories where she recommended it to put the book on my wishlist later. :) I do hope you will keep buying more sewing related books because I selfishly enjoy your recommendations and, as there aren't many good bookshops where I live, it allows me to see the inside of the book and assess its value to me.
Thank you for your time and effort that you spend filming and editing your sewing endeavors, I would get burned out after just few weeks of doing it. Don't know how you keep up. :) Best wishes, L.

Very exciting news about this channel! More clothing like this, and less sweatpants with "juicy" emblazoned on the rear, is a good thing! I'm in love with all things Victorian and some early 1900's shows. Such as the Walton's. I felt the desire to have pretty housewife dresses like Olivia, so my stay at home mom self could saunter about this house full of boys a little more dignified. I immediately knew those dresses and aprons don't come ready on the local Meijer racks, and I would need to learn to sew my own wardrobe. That's where you came in, during my research and happy discovery of your treasure trove of videos! Thank you for teaching the world all that you know, and for dazzling us all with your fun personality! I love watching your blogs so much, and am really enjoying your work ethic of just trying things and seeing how they go (and giving yourself a break if they don’t work out quite how you thought!) We all spend so much time beating ourselves up if a project doesn’t go to plan, but these are the things that actually hold us back and make us fearful of trying new things! Nobody is an expert at something the very first time they try it. I’m not even a sewer, I just mean in every aspect of life!
Loving the colour of the material for your mock up. Dark red is my literal jam. So sorry to hear about your cat’s health issues, but what a lucky cat to live with you and your husband, given so much love.
So happy you’ve hit 10k - well deserved! You have a natural charm and friendliness that sparkles through the screen. Cannot WAIT to see the final costume for the May ball in Bath - and all the other costumes and people there, it will be so exciting to watch. And it helps that I happen to adore Good Omens. X

I started to follow you a month or so ago. I fell down the rabbit hole with Cathy Hay and Bernadette Banner. Then I was very happy to find you. My 12 year old daughter and I love to watch your videos together. I know that you guys are safe for her to watch. She is into sewing and loves to see what your making. I love the fact that you keep it real, you show that people can and do make mistakes. That there is nothing wrong with that. I was in a reenacting group for a few years. But got burnt out by all the BS. I love how you say if it makes you happy then fine, you do you. All of you that I have found have been amazing and I am very glad that I found you. Also since I am a Disney lover, I enjoy your Disney videos as well. Thanks again.

Congrats!! on reaching 10K followers! :) Don't think I've ever mentioned how much I enjoy your sewing room. The artwork, books, etc. add so much to the general ambiance of your workspace. Hope to have a similar space in my home one day! :) I made a skirt very similar to this one (based on a 1960s McCalls pattern) when I was a senior in high school. My dad worked as a research chemist for a company that developed fabrics, etc. He found some discarded sample fabric on the floor one day and brought it home for me to play with. It was similar to ?velour?, ?velvet? ..... so, needless to say, the skirt is not historically accurate, but I had fun wearing it over the years. It's still hanging in the closet...a little worse for wear! ;)
Sending lots of positive, healing energy for your sweet Dakota!

10k, whoo hoo! Congratulations! The way I deal with too narrow fabric is to lay the fabric out single layer, no fold. Then cut one piece long enough for the length of your pattern, plus seam allowance and hem. Then put the cut piece on top of the remaining fabric, right sides together and align grain. That way you have 2 full width pieces. It can take some extra yardage to do this but it avoids unnecessary seams.

Here I am introducing myself! I was immediately drawn to your video because I am making the 1890's walking skirt. I've got my skirt flatlined and now I need to fell the seams before I sew the waistband on. I like to repurpose material, I found this great cream and blue striped curtain made of 100% cotton, that was perfect. Of course it wasn't exactly enough, I had to horizontal the stripes for the front panel. It's actually my mock up before I make my Gibson Girl/Schoolmarm for Costume College. Came to you through the Secret Santa Videos, such a great idea for a holiday video. Good luck to you on the skirt. I look forward to your struggles, they inspire me to keep pushing through.
