Three things: You can totally sneak a pair of yoga pants under this skirt. The comfy-cozy factor is off the charts. Second, I hope I didn't mis-pronounce any names. Last: I poke at Bernadette Banner, but it's all in wry fun. I have all the respect in the world for B. You really DO have to respect someone who can revive a 100+ years-old trend! 😃
I heard the quirky personal jokes, and internationally agreed. It takes one video going viral to spark a large scale trend. I blame my current closet purge on Marie Kondo. Sparks a negative memory or painful feelings of guilt or internal body shaming -- it's outta here.
I don’t know of anyone who hasn’t had sewing disasters while making something. You handled it wonderfully. Remember, chocolate will make all things better.
Just as tinking and frogging are skills equally important to knitting, so seam ripping is to sewing. The first time I made a skirt, I sewed the bottom hem together instead of the center back seam. THREE TIMES! And 30 some years later, I got interrupted too many times when marking my hem and cut the whole thing several inches shorter in the back than the front. Only the fact that it was a busy paisley let me save my pride, no one can see the seam where I stuck it all back on! All you can do is swear a lot and keep moving. Your finished skirt looks great, especially with the red blouse. Thank you for sharing these wonderful videos. I really enjoy watching.
Its lovely to see a plus size lady sharing her sewing experience. I started my journey with Bernadette and have found so many awesome women. Glad to meet you! I'll be sticking around 😌
I love this. Especially that you kept in the mistakes and do-over process and "it looked like ass." These are real parts of sewing that need to be shown more!
Agreed. I love the vast majority of sewing videos in Costube, but so many of them come out perfect the first time, it can be intimidating! I'd rather show where I found a problem and how to fix it (if possible)
Ah, yes... that moment when a project has gone so far sideways that it's practically upside down, and the personal stubbornness comes out to shine! You look lovely in it!
Oh dear, i am sympathetic chuckling with you. I am the absolute QUEEN of sewing panels in the wrong way around. Occasionally upside down. Front to back. If its a wrong way, i’ve mastered it 🤦🏼♀️ Silver lining! I am exceptional at unpicking overlocking! Skirts and dresses must have pockets! The pocket of requirement. The pocket bag of holding. The black hole pocket. Must hold giant mobile phone. Occasionally a kindle. 14 used tissues. Car keys. That thing you need to get a new one of at the hardware shop. And my glasses. Which strangely enough always seem to be covered in dried snot. Your skirt turned out wonderfully in the end. All that perseverance paid off :)
Ah, the continuing influence of the ever lovely Ms. Banner. This has been on my list for quite some time. And my inner 90's girl Needs That Vest. But, skirt first - I found that lovely, lovely wool at the Village, so I'm about to make this a complicated process for myself. Mock-ups, wearable mock-ups, basing, seam marking with thread, basing, Victorian pockets, more basing, lining, more basting, horsehair canvas, basting... you get the idea of the total courtier/Victorian treatment I'm working myself up towards. You skirt is So beautiful. Well done. You should wear it grocery shopping with a "Dead Kennedy's" tee and appropriate jewelry And, to go with the leveling-up that will be the 2022 ongoing exercise, I'm about to pick up a half-size mannequin that I'll pad up to a plus-size Mini Me (yes, she is named before I met her). Because how hard will it be to double a pattern up to full size (stop laughing, I can hear it from here, Dudette...). This is my small apartment solution to figure out draping and how patterns actually work. And draping. I want to figure out draping without using up all of my VV cotton sheets. Exciting. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Graphic t's and a walking skirt are right up my alley...though I think my band shirts are limited to Bauhaus, Primus, Alice in Chains and Weird Al. Which probably reveals more about my personality than intended 😁 I found using the corset helped pad the dress form. Wonder if bootstrap can be used for your wee form?
@@MaireColclough I'm actually going to try and franken pattern my own mini-me bootstrap (once I get the padding about right). Prayers and incense apricated. And if that doesn't work I'll spring for the official pattern, because it just works off of measurements, so what do the algorithms care if it's a mini me? You know those almost pinable dressforms they have for store display that come in s/m/l - get a large and then bootstrap the heck out of it. Maybe put a little zip or buttons on the side so the model can be used for more than one body... And I love your tees. They display only the best of taste.
@@MaireColclough As she should. Marilyn just needed a good home to stay in. And, yeah, Boot the Strap on what you already have. I'm not going to go a build a platform if I don't have to...
And then the MUSIC! ive said it before, (or possibly implied it) but ive been waiting for a youtuber like you. You are my favorite sewing youtuber. You give honest reviews on the patterns you use. You are honest with your experiences, and you speak the truth about the WHOLE thing. Showing the reality that mistakes are made and the sad and irritating fact that the seam ripper is the most important item in the sewing room. Your smart funny witty, and inspiring. Please, for as long as hour health permits, dont stop making videos.
Thank you so much 😊 I try to be honest about my attempts and experiences. While I'm a proficient crafter, I'm not a natural sewist. That said, I think anyone and everyone can and should enjoy making their own clothing and costumes. It can be fun and infinitely more flattering! It can just be a real journey to get there. 😃
That looks so comfortable and really flattering with the red blouse. I empathise entirely with the series of unfortunate sewing mistakes meaning you had to redo so much of it, we've all been there!
Ohhh, yes! I've sewed many a shirt sleeve backwards, wrong sides, inside out, etc. Then repeated my mistake exactly the same! My seam rippers (note, I have way more than just one!) are my most used tool.
Friend I just found your channel when looking for fellow plus-size historical costumers (of which I am very new) and I'm loving you. Especially getting my mind around corsets as someone with a big belly and chest real estate is a feel I believe we share. Much love
Been watching for over 2 years, aaaaaaaaaaannnnddddddd this has been in the works for a while. Glad you are getting to your own version. I panic with scissors. I'll make 50 paper versions before ever even trying to cut the actual parts. I blame my grandmother. I just realized that someone might need this trick. To keep front and backside of fabric from confusion. Grandma taught me to use those small gold safety pins. Before the fabric is even cut, put a gold pin at the top of the pattern piece on the (wrong side) this will do 2 things. You know the top of the part immediately and you know what side you are working on. It wasn't until I questioned G'maw on her large collection of pins the size of my nails. Maybe that will help someone. I have garments she made with some "accidentally " left in safety pins. I will never remove them either.
Such a great tip! I'm about to make my first dress (when the weather cooperates enough for me to wash and dry the fabric), so will employ my collection of safety pins.
I found the folkwear pattern version back in the 1970s and have made many versions of this skirt for myself. My favourite was made of "Madras cotton" which means bright plaid. I made each piece out of a different plaid and put the back pieces on the diagonal. I cheated and used a zipper. This was a for fun version. I have also used elastic in the back waistband, menopause meant constant weight changes for a while and I got tired of altering my favourite skirts.
@@MaireColclough it is. I still have it. It is very light so works well on really hot summer days. It keeps the sun off my dead white legs while still allowing air to move through. Not acceptable to Victorians perhaps, but it works for me. Plaid in funky angles works well with this pattern. I have used this style for everything from steampunk to my daughter's prom dress. The flat front and full back is flattering to most figures, nobody needs volume in the front.
My pockets have at least my keys, inhaler & phone. (Work pockets usually have inhaler, keys & fob for the car park, anti bacterial gel, tissues, a notepad, pens, visual prompt cards for snack etc, small toys I found on the floor, more small toys children were putting in the 'wrong place' eg home toys that were going to get lost / preschool toys that were trying to go home / puzzle pieces that were making their way into the garden, a dummy (pacifier?), felt tip pen lids, crayons.. )
Aaa looks great! I have made about 4 of these of varying lengths and fabrics and they just work so well. Welcome to the club! (Also i love your dry humour. We shall indeed blame Bernadette for us all owning such a fabulous skirt)
@@MaireColclough once i had the pattern that worked... it's a pretty easy skirt to throw together! I have one in a light swoopy fabric for summer, not particularly historical but it makes a delightful modern "maxi" skirt. Got some time before summer 😎
Congratulations! It looks great. Your change to the pocket construction is clever. I make a lot of pockets that way and have done so for 50(!) years. I really need to make a video on how to rip out overlock/serger seams, I can do it quickly and easily without much mess. Yes, yoga pants under if there is snow or wind makes total sense. Thank you for sharing. UNSOLICITED ADVICE SECTION: (Don't read if you don't want it) - Learn to sew with a thimble; it will make your life so much easier. Find one that really fits and works well and buy half a dozen. Your equipment is great; many beginner sewists have to use what every family will give them or what they find at the thrift store. Try not to sew over your pins, you could end up with an expensive machine repair.
Thank you for all the tips! I've been trying to get better about some of my poorer sewing habits, but I think I reached a certain level of "F-it" on this project 😁
I really like your skirt. I think it turned out well. And I laughed so hard I cried at "it looked like ass". I had to pause the video till I could breathe again. Thank you for sharing your mistakes with us.
SUCH DEVASTATION! This is NOT what I intended! AAARGHH! So frustrating when you merrily get a whole lot done, la la la, and then the next day realize exactly how much you smurfed it up. The result is fantastic tho!
Isn't learning by experience wonderful--when it's done and over with and you never have to go there again!? You look truly elegant, comfy, and witchy in that beauty. 😍😍😍
This turned out so good!! Looks amazing! Also thanks for showing when things don’t always go perfectly. It’s always helpful to know I’m not the only one. 😆😊
I really like how your skirt came out. So sorry you had so many issues with making it though. I love your videos - the sarcasm, the information, the making and the showing of the mistakes. I carry a cellphone, wallet (well and truly overloaded with all the loyalty cards, etc, that must be carried in it), car keys, handkerchief and mask (seeing as those are an essential item these pandemic days). Sometimes I also carry a knee support bandage, lens kit for my cellphone, ear buds, shopping list and it goes on. But the basics always go in my pocket when I get dressed in the morning and it's a pain that my work trousers pockets are so shallow that those things sometimes fall out which is why my first planned historically adequate project is some tie on pockets
Isn't it a lovely garment - it's beautiful and flattering and you look wonderful! You've mentioned it's cold where you live - you'll be able to swan about in your gorgeous walking skirt with as many layers and pants as you want to - with none the wiser - and still feel like a feminine petal - which is not unimportant ! We ladies sometimes need to feel like special petals even in the privacy of our own home while slopping about! I have read that in some of the colder times in European history - the ladies would wear quilted petticoats which sound so comfortable and warm.
That looks amazing! Oh and my pockets, aside from Keys and phone, Chapstick, Gum, Small tube of moisturiser, Mask, Hand Sanitiser, and possibly a snack or two... I tend to make USABLE HANDBAG sized pockets. 😁.. Mind you The Partner realises this and i end up with his wallet and car keys also... I jangle when I walk.. i fear this is so he knows EXACTLY where I am at all times...
That's OK. Tell him your pockets are a little heavy and you need help carrying something...then take out a ribbon necklace with jingle bells on it. Now you'll know where he is too! 😉
There is a reason methods have evolved over time. You have demonstrated this perfectly. Sorry for your pain of discovery. Sometimes the reason "traditional" methods have gone by the wayside is not from apathy, needlessness nor oversight. These methods change because better ones have been developed. No one is a failure for not using a historical pocket method. You are right...it is unnecessarily fiddily. Nothing wrong with the method you used. Same with using horsehair in your hem. It didn't exist in situ. It was invented because someone felt the interlined tarlatan was fiddily and "looked like ass". If you look closely at some aforementioned CosTubers hems they are not perfectly beautiful using the "traditional" method. The horsehair does the job and is an acceptable method to achieve the goal of a stiffened, supported hem line. Finally, not all fabric needs to be flat lined. It depends on the application and silhouette you desire from the drape of the textile. You are being "historically accurate" by adapting. No guilt or shame here. Thank you for being genuine.
I love it that you are realistic about the process!! My grey wool walking skirt has issues. 🙄 the pleats on the left hang funny. 🙄 the wool hem tape is wavy. 🙄 the pockets look stretched even though the basting threads are still in.🙄 and the placket goes to lie flat. I wear it around the house anyway… I hate ripping stuff out! But, I know it needs to be done… so I will take courage from this video and get to it. 🧵 Happy sewing peeps!!
Honestly, it didn't take long to fix my mistakes. They were just frustrating to discover. I'm happy I made the repairs. It sounds like you love your own skirt just fine as it is, so any extra work will just be icing on the cake 😃
Beautiful! With the corset it would give your lovely sillouhet great dignity.. congratulations on a beautiful garment. As for B.B. how can you not love her? She just got me knitting again after 50 years of hiatus! Hernspinnign wheel episode got me watching spinning and yarning and everything in between! Too poor to spin... not a crochet buff, but I've a skill in knitting, be it ever so humble,
Nice result! Since you asked - My pockets usually contain a leather pouch with keys and coins in (saves wear and tear on pocket fabric), a credit and transit card folder (also holds paper money and postage stamps, ususally), lip balm, wedding ring (when I've forgotten to put it back on after hand washing). I don't own a mobile phone, and would probably need to replace a lot of the current pockets in my shorts with deeper ones if I did need to carry one. I have to do this anyway with some of them, as mens clothing manufacturers don't seem to realize that the purpose of having a pocket is that it's deep enough to keep things in and prevent them from falling right back out again... but at least it's better than womens clothing manufacturrs, in that they do include pockets in nearly everything, even if they are pretty much vestigial in some instances.
My pockets (my sweater pockets, mostly) have just my phone, keys, and a single credit card, cuz I don't want to wipe down my wallet every time I run to the store. Ah, yes. The ubiquitous walking skirt. I have several different patterns, and they all get to the same place -- smooth front, fluffy behind. This looks fabulous on you! YAY, walking skirt.
Well this was quite a journey...but all's well that ends well! The skirt looks great. And if you are looking for a really great pocket tutorial I recommend Nikki Leams Video on pockets, easy to follow and to be used in any skirt!
I think Miss B understands snark, and I don't believe she is bothered by it. The skirt is lovely and looks so comfy, well done! What do I keep in my pockets? Car keyfob, phone, chapstick, and a pen, cause I always seem to need one.
Yes, this is my favorite skirt!! I have made...5 for myself so far with plans for like....6 more. XD XD I also use the TV291 pattern. Drafting my own from the Keystone guide is still a little too scary. On my most recent one I used 6inch wide horsehair and have really liked the results. I also don't flat line unless the fashion fabric needs it (silk, thin cotton etc.).
I love your skirt. I'm just beginning my historical clothing journey. I've purchased a couple of patterns and am gathering supplies to begin my first project. Thanks for sharing your trials and wins. I have a small battery operated seam ripper that I use for removing serger seams. I prefer to find the magic thread that helps pull out a serger seam fast and east but that's hard to find, of course. So my little battery operated seam ripper comes in handy at those times.
I looked up a video on ripping back serge edges, so the magic threads are definitely a thing. I don't know if a battery operated seam ripper would be a wise idea in my hands... 😁
Blame Bernadette? Absolutely you should. I do and before the sewing machine debacle, I made 3 of them. I took my first one apart at least 4 times before I finally got it right. I even watched both of Bernadette's walking skirt videos multiple times to see how it went together. The fact that you only had to take yours completely apart once is remarkable. And it turned out beautifully too! 😍😍 I'm totally digging your matching nails too. I know a certain 13 or old who would love for her nails to match her skirts. She will have a new life goal after this. I have a bit of a confession to make. I hate pockets. I may be the only woman in modern society who feels they are over rated. The only pocket I really like is the kangaroo pouch of my hoodie. History bounding or not. There is something to be said about the hoodie. Some ladies like yoga pants some like hoodies. I just happen to be a hoodie kinda gal. I love the way yours looked with your skirt so I will be pairing off mine with my hoodie too. Quick question where did you get your hedgehog pin cushion? It is so cute!
I'm with you on the pockets. My mother didn't believe in pockets {no, Mom, they're a real thing} because they warp the clothes. In non-plague times, I carry a purse. These days, I just carry my things in my hands (only three things, no big deal.)
Pockets - phone, keys, dog poo bag, hanky. On shopping days, shopping list and pencil. Wallet is a metal one clipped to the waistband. I hate carrying a handbag!!
I looks great on you and the commentary was hilarious because we've all been there with backwards this, don't like that, picking stuff out and hating everything. Thank you for the honest portrayal.
I recently added pockets to one of the walking skirts I made myself, because as much as I hate inserting them...I cannot live without pockets! I have to have my keys when I'm at work, a glasses cloth, my keycard and bus card to GET to work, and my phone and headphones. Other things may sneak in and out of them, but the keys and the cards are so essential to being able to like...go up to costume storage or my office, or leave the building without worrying.
I have been sewing all manner of things for over 40 years and I still have those wrong side out/messed up issues occasionally. I is just s part of the process. Kudos to you for not trashing the skirt and just knuckling under and fixing the issues. Congratulations on a job well done.
I love that you jump into all these things that I, a fellow plus size person, find quite intimidating. There are so many straight sized sewists, it's so refreshing to see someone my size tackling all this stuff 💖 Thank you!
I guess I'm the only person who doesn't really like pockets! I would rather carry a little bag/purse/reticule. Everyone has sewing disasters and it's just part of learning. Eventually things get easier. I don't own a serger and just zigzag around each piece to keep finishing easy. Good job!
I was going to zigzag until the serger made its way into my home. Honestly, I'm having more luck with the new machine than figuring out zigzag with black thread on black fabric 😁
It looks so wonderful on you! Great job! I would have cried if I had to basically remake it and it would probably have been in time out for several months while I regained my confidence to work on it. I carry my phone, inhaler, keys, and chapstick at all times…and many other things as needed…
Thank you! I think I grumped around the house for an afternoon, and the Husbeast coached me through a small crying jag, but all's well that ends well 😁
Glad you stuck it out. It's nice to see this one on so many body shapes and so far I haven't seen it not be wonderful on any body. And huzzah for decent pockets
I once sewed a sleeve into the neck opening. I cursed the pattern as I painstakingly eased the neck fullness into that sleeve top, breathed a phew when finished, held it up and squawked with laughter.
I’ve just finished drafting the keystone skirt, which I had to do in two parts because it’s so large, and I’m a wheelchair user (and therefore no floor trolling for me). My bright idea was to draft it out at 1/2 size, and then size up the individual pattern pieces so I’d still be able to fit everything on my table. It worked. I wish I could have just floor trolled, but it worked. I’m making a petticoat using the top half of the pattern, and drain what I can see it looks fine fit wise. I’ll still be using a cheaper black cotton to make my first full skirt before I go in with the my expensive tartan. Because they are ubiquitous, sure. But it’s for a reason, as you point out. They’re just so darn practical. Which is why I’m planning a couple petticoats and at least 3 walking skirts for my wardrobe. Though given the TV pattern is so popular, I might also buy that and use it for one of my skirts.
The nice thing about the TV pattern is they include all their sizes, so it's good for the quick & dirty simple pattern (ha ha..."Simple") And you're probably better off without the floor trolling...I have up hope of attaining that lifestyle for myself 😉
I think it looks fantastic! I concur, if pleats or gathering improve the look of my fanny, they will be there. For some reason, your nail polish sent me into a childish glitter envy! Go figure! So thanks for the polish info. Now back to my date with an ironing board cover that is taking way to long.
I bought fabric i summer of 2020 to make a walking skirt. The fabric is still waiting in the drawer. Maybe it's about time? Your chaotic sewing walking skirt video was just what I needed to day. The skirt looks so lovely and yoga pants under skirts and petticoats should be a trend of it's own! I'll join right away (once I have a skirt that is.....) The cyperwear trend can wait :D
I created a mock up of a self drafted walking skirt last year. Hated the pocket placement…no side seam to put it in. Attempted an elastic side section to facilitate corset-vs-no-corset wear. Hated it. Lost momentum, and am still skirtless. Rethinking MY life choices. Thanks for sharing yours!
Definitely try the Truly Victorian for the skirt panels, if you can. Makes it so much easier than having to self-draft (and there's a side seam so you can make your pockets however you prefer!) 😃
The struggle was worth it. The skirt came out beautiful. I sure felt your pain in un-doing serged seams. Been there. And I love the thought of my ample and full backside being a “feature” in a walking skirt. Now I must make one. How is it that you always manage to add to my To Do list?!
Omg I’m so sorry that was frustrating as hell. Looks cozy as hell though, perfect for fall and winter! Totally here for the yoga pants under skirts. Since moving to Florida I have to wear bike/yoga shorts under my skirts so you’re not alone!
Those bike/yoga-ish shorts are all the rage now for summer wear under dresses...I may have even invested in a pair myself, and I'm in the frozen north 😉
I think I have the same wool blend fabric in my stash, or one very, very similar to it. I have yet to make it into a skirt or pinafore (which is what I bought it for)....or a walking skirt cause I have enough. I've been using just the visuals from the Keystone guide for my drafting with a bit of a twist, but I managed it to work fairly well. I just have to make a few tweaks. The first one I made was out of quilting cotton and I also flat lined it for weight. Also, Holo from a fan of Holo Taco, and fellow Canadian!
We are of similar size. I love that you show that women of our size have pattern options and what those patterns look like after all is said and done. My sewing list has gotten a little longer because of you. I may even try my hand at making a corset. Well Done!
Your skirt looks lovely. I have dyslexia so you have my sympathy on your visit to my normal! It’s a very annoying place where nothing is ever right way round! If it hadn’t been for the post no one would ever even known that you had visited!!
Oh, heck yeah! It turned out so beautiful. You look great in it and I'd be lying if I didn't say how seen I felt with you rocking it with a hoodie! I cracked up at your can't stop won't stop! I will use it as my mantra as I begin making my own walking skirt.
I blame Bernadette aswell! As I made my own walking skirt with my own hand drawn patterns and sewing it by hand! Next time I buy a pattern and use my brand new sewing machine that I bought right after the skirt!! 😅🤣👍 Good work with the skirt! A real beuty 10/10 from me too! And thank you for the stiffener talk as I have no such thing and was wondering what works.. as bukram will not survive wash without losing its stiffnes… or so I believe and I MUST WASH EVERYTING 😆
Ah, the Canadian market... I wouldn't even know where to go for Tarlatan around here, and I live in one of the biggest cities. "We've got 12 kinds of polyester for ya, but it also comes in French!"
I love your humour. I don't own a walking skirt but I think I should own one xD I carry around a small purse for my phone, cards, tissues, a badge for my work and keys because I don't usually have front pants pockets and even if they are there, it would be bulky AF. Now I'm thinking that I should make a couple of overalls with many many pockets so my stuff would fit 😂
I love that you admitted to your mistakes and talked about what you had to take apart and reassemble. I have to do it at least once every other project now, but man when I mess something up it's really messed up.
There are some fabulous sewists sharing their work on UA-cam these days...and a lot of folks who would like to make similar items but either don't try out of fear of messing up, or get frustrated when they do. Thing is...you learn from those attempts. So if my sewing foibles help someone else give the hobby a try with the expectation that they might screw up - and that it's ok - then I think I'm doing a good job. 😁
Thank you for sharing your skirting adventure! The skirt looks fabulous 😍and I really appreciate your sharing the bits about chosing the hem lining material and why. Ahh, essential pocket crap. I have mostly given up shoulder bags because of body damage and I don't always have built-in pockets, so I often use the modernized version of the tie-on pockets : A FANNY PACK! I have two favourites - one that looks a bit like a small creel or sporran with out the fur or fringe and one made by a back-pack company in sturdy fabric. Cell phone, keys, IDs, various money formats, tissues, spare mask, lip/chap stick, gloves, and a kerchief-with-a-flat-brim-on-it tie-on hat that rolls up small and flat. For work, I use my 'all-terrain briefcase' with wheels and a collapse-able handle. Doubles as a mini survival kit, because I'm one of those people.
I too have made the ubiquitous walking skirt. It's a woollen one for winter, and I'm planning to make a lightweight one for summer. As the original Goth aesthetic was based on Vicwardian fashion, they fit my personal style well. But, unlike practically every costumer I follow, I LOATHE pockets in lower half garments 😲 Why? Because if I have pockets, I will always shove my hands in them. This triggers an instant and subconscious change in my posture / stance meaning that, regardless of the femininity of the outfit, I am transformed directly into Geezer-Bird 😆 Now I do frequently embrace my inner Geezer-bird, but I'd rather not when I'm wearing a long floaty skirt or elegant evening trousers 😉
I feel your pain with having to rip out the mistakes and fix them. I am currently working on an easy loose fitting skirt. First I sized the pattern up several sizes. Then I sized the wearable mockup down a couple of sizes. And now I am craving my desired shape in to the skirt. Due to my needed hip modifications, I have to redo some of the waistband. I didn't want to redo the waist at first but I know I will be happier with the final product (custom fit) when I make the changes.😢😮😅
I think you did a spectacularly fabulous job with this. It does not matter how you get there, just that you do. As to the pocket thing, I am a sacriligious b$&@h because I don't like putting pockets in my skirts. I leave the sides with openings so I can make a tie-on type for if I need to carry my change purse or cards. I am not a phone person at all. The added bonus I found is that I don't have to worry about someone trying to rob me when I am checking out my own groceries. I can still be lumpy though, so I only use it if I need to.
Every time I see one of these cool walking skirts, I think "I want a cool walking skirt!" Then I remember that while I love the look of skirts, I don't actually like wearing skirts. Dang it! I need palazzo pants, I guess.
When you realised the errors I wanted to give you a hug and then pick up my seam ripper to help you. Well done for continuing. All too often we get the impression that we are the only ones to make mistakes like this. Rest assured, everybody does at some point. Some of us do it frequently
I just found you yesterday and i love you. I love that you struggle like me with pattern and that it also sometimes take you way to much time to make something because its hard in a weird way. I always feel like im so stupid at sewing compared to other people. I might not have the brain for that thing. But then again. Learning pattern and instruction in you second language is hard while you also dont know it in your own mother language. hehe. And it love seeing a really big woman like myself. because you look beautiful in what you make. And i know we are not meant to compare ourselves with others, but thats bull in my opinoin most of the time its a human thing we have always done it. it just because unhealthy at one point. And seeing you looking awesome and beautiful in what you make make me feel good about my size in history clothing
I make that skirt several years ago for a steampunk costume. I made it out of silk satin. I lined it and it is heavy but I don't have extra petticoats so it worked out. I should pull out the pattern and make another skirt out of linen and not use a corset with it.
Girl, love the way this turned out!! I made a frustrating walking skirt a few weeks ago out of a heavy cotton twill...now for the broadcloth version! Which will likely be just as frustrating lol
since I never go anywhere these past 2 years & next is not looking good either, I always have a hankie( all vintage of course) and paper towels in my pocket...I have cats....you look very nice in the skirt....came out lovely.
It really shows how behind I am on all my CosTube watching that I only just watched this 😅 Such a lovely video and your skirt turned out gorgeous! Sorry that the pockets gave you a hard time ❤️
That turned out beautifully. And secretly wearing yoga pants is the best thing about long skirts. How many yards of fabric did that take? I have a walking skirt on my to do list, but I'm not sure how much wool to budget for. 🤔
Every time a video about walking skirts I say I'll make one, I do have the perfect fabric for it, but it would have to be a mini-walking skirt. What would I carry in my pockets if I had big eneugh ones? Keys, wallet, phone, sewing kit, notebook, pencilcase, extra covid masks, now with the cold weather a pair of woolen gloves.
This is me in ever project, but without the cool reveal at the end. I think Is sewed something wrong about 4 times in my last project! Usually give up! LOL But I am enjoying my sewing journey! I'm glad you are too!
I was just thinking....." I wouldn't want to line my imaginary walking skirt ".
I don’t know of anyone who hasn’t had sewing disasters while making something. You handled it wonderfully. Remember, chocolate will make all things better.
Thank you! And yes, a little chocolate may have assisted in the recovery 😉
Chocolate & curse words help my recovery from sewing disasters.
Amen to that I second that emotion.
You look so beautiful in it so I give this skirt 60 hearts ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sometimes I think my personal stubbornness needs its own channel 😂
Oh dear, i am sympathetic chuckling with you. I am the absolute QUEEN of sewing panels in the wrong way around. Occasionally upside down. Front to back. If its a wrong way, i’ve mastered it 🤦🏼♀️
Silver lining!
I am in search of the Pocket of Holding. Because anything that can carry a can of pepsi on one hip and a Kobo on the other is aces in my book 😄
Well done. You should wear it grocery shopping with a "Dead Kennedy's" tee and appropriate jewelry
And, to go with the leveling-up that will be the 2022 ongoing exercise, I'm about to pick up a half-size mannequin that I'll pad up to a plus-size Mini Me (yes, she is named before I met her). Because how hard will it be to double a pattern up to full size (stop laughing, I can hear it from here, Dudette...). This is my small apartment solution to figure out draping and how patterns actually work. And draping. I want to figure out draping without using up all of my VV cotton sheets. Exciting.

Graphic t's and a walking skirt are right up my alley...though I think my band shirts are limited to Bauhaus, Primus, Alice in Chains and Weird Al. Which probably reveals more about my personality than intended 😁
I found using the corset helped pad the dress form.
@@stevezytveld6585 I'm eventually going to bootstrap my MiL's old form. I've named her Marilyn. She lives here now 😁
@@MaireColclough As she should.
Thank you so much 😊
I try to be honest about my attempts and experiences.
It takes a while, but I do learn eventually 😉
Ohhh, yes! I've sewed many a shirt sleeve backwards, wrong sides, inside out, etc. Then repeated my mistake exactly the same! My seam rippers (note, I have way more than just one!) are my most used tool.
Ooh! A walking skirt in a dark wool with circuit diagrams embroidered around the hem would look amazing!
Don't. Give. Me. Ideas! 😂
Friend I just found your channel when looking for fellow plus-size historical costumers (of which I am very new) and I'm loving you. Especially getting my mind around corsets as someone with a big belly and chest real estate is a feel I believe we share. Much love
Thank you! 😊
There was a video game character bounce in there... Like it.
I need a dolly or a really large lazy susan if I ever want to really embody the video game character screen 😉
That's a good tip! Thank you (and your Grandma)! 😃
Definitely stealing this tip! Thanks to your grandma!
Such a great tip! I'm about to make my first dress (when the weather cooperates enough for me to wash and dry the fabric), so will employ my collection of safety pins.
This is such a great tip. Thank you and your grandmother.
Lovely. Both you and the skirt. Take care.
Thank you! 😊
I'm thinking of making a version with elastic in the back waist as well. Your Madras Cotton skirt sounds vibrant!
Well done! 😃👍🏻
4 skirts?! I have some catching up to do... 😉
@@MaireColclough Totally understandable!
I really like your skirt. I think it turned out well. And I laughed so hard I cried at "it looked like ass". I had to pause the video till I could breathe again. Thank you for sharing your mistakes with us.
I just calls 'em as I sees 'em 😄
SUCH DEVASTATION! This is NOT what I intended! AAARGHH!
So frustrating when you merrily get a whole lot done, la la la, and then the next day realize exactly how much you smurfed it up. The result is fantastic tho!
I was very happy it wasn't smurfed even further. I'm so happy with the fantastic result! 😄
Isn't learning by experience wonderful--when it's done and over with and you never have to go there again!?
You look truly elegant, comfy, and witchy in that beauty. 😍😍😍
Thank you! I'll be happy to not have to re-learn those lessons again 😉
This turned out so good!! Looks amazing! Also thanks for showing when things don’t always go perfectly. It’s always helpful to know I’m not the only one. 😆😊
You're definitely not alone. The struggle is real 😁
You make the best videos. I need to hear other sewists' struggles and see their achievements. Sewing is hard!
@@MaireColclough now that's a plan. 😁😁😁
Your opinions and sass, are, as always, delightful.
Thank you 💕
There is a reason methods have evolved over time.
Thank YOU for reminding me why these methods evolved. Because it really is an evolution 😃
@@MaireColclough 🌞
Hooray for the humble (coin) purse! And I'm sure that you could turn your current pockets into bags of holding with a little thread and spare fabric 😉
Yay, walking skirt and it's fluffy backside 😁
Well this was quite a journey...but all's well that ends well! The skirt looks great. And if you are looking for a really great pocket tutorial I recommend Nikki Leams Video on pockets, easy to follow and to be used in any skirt!
I'll check out Nikki's tutorial, thanks! 💕
I think Miss B understands snark, and I don't believe she is bothered by it. The skirt is lovely and looks so comfy, well done! What do I keep in my pockets? Car keyfob, phone, chapstick, and a pen, cause I always seem to need one.
Pens are very important. And definitely underrated 😉
I'm already waffling about making another...maybe when I have a few less projects on my list 😁
shouldn't we all have a Ubiquitous Walking Skirt? :) as for what I carry, I carry everything, since I don't carry a purse, I depend on pockets
I prefer pockets when I can get them 😁
Blame Bernadette?
I had to up my seam-ripping game for black thread on black fabric. Definitely recommend Holo Taco for the 13-year old! (Not sponsored, lol) 😁
I'm with you on the pockets. My mother didn't believe in pockets {no, Mom, they're a real thing} because they warp the clothes. In non-plague times, I carry a purse. These days, I just carry my things in my hands (only three things, no big deal.)
Bernadette does say regularly that she is not making tutorials! I would never be able to follow most costumers’ processes.
@@susanrobertson984 i'm a very visual person. If I can see how it goes together I can can replicate it.
And yet your video is my favourite one of all of them, because funny and realistic and also looks fab. Run on sentences for the win :)
Aw, thanks 😊
I love that you jump into all these things that I, a fellow plus size person, find quite intimidating. There are so many straight sized sewists, it's so refreshing to see someone my size tackling all this stuff 💖 Thank you!
You're welcome! 😃
Thank you!
I think I grumped around the house for an afternoon, and the Husbeast coached me through a small crying jag, but all's well that ends well 😁
@@MaireColclough Awwe! 💖
So glad I’m not the only one who puts super challenging projects into time out!
Glad you stuck it out. It's nice to see this one on so many body shapes and so far I haven't seen it not be wonderful on any body. And huzzah for decent pockets
It's so rare to find such a flattering skirt shape...we need more skirts with gathers over the posterior!
I once sewed a sleeve into the neck opening. I cursed the pattern as I painstakingly eased the neck fullness into that sleeve top, breathed a phew when finished, held it up and squawked with laughter.
That is fantastic. Full stop 😁
The nice thing about the TV pattern is they include all their sizes, so it's good for the quick & dirty simple pattern (ha ha..."Simple")
And you're probably better off without the floor trolling...I have up hope of attaining that lifestyle for myself 😉
Phone, keys, used to be a paperback book everyday, and generally some remnant of a crafting project I forgot to empty out
I think it looks fantastic! I concur, if pleats or gathering improve the look of my fanny, they will be there. For some reason, your nail polish sent me into a childish glitter envy! Go figure! So thanks for the polish info. Now back to my date with an ironing board cover that is taking way to long.
Happily, Holo Taco is very affordable 😉
Hurrah for persistence 🪡🧵💙 also as an art school kid I'm here for all the typography choices. Comic sans is mood.
Comic Sans seems to be my "F-it" font 😄
I bought fabric i summer of 2020 to make a walking skirt. The fabric is still waiting in the drawer. Maybe it's about time?
Your chaotic sewing walking skirt video was just what I needed to day. The skirt looks so lovely and yoga pants under skirts and petticoats should be a trend of it's own! I'll join right away (once I have a skirt that is.....) The cyperwear trend can wait :D
Do it! It's definitely the right time of year for cozy skirts 😃
A well-padded posterior definitely saves time in the making of fake rumps, that's for sure 😉
That blouse and skirt combo made me gasp. Gorgeous!
I could see flat-lining the cotton...less so with suiting 😁
That said, the stripe would make a lovely pinafore!
Hooray for Holo! 💕
What is tha keystone guide to drafting. (Newbie to the concept of sewing, let alone history bounding, in case that wasn’t clear by my question… :) )
You crack me up girl! Your droll yet hilarious delivery is perfect, as is your skirt! 10 out of 10, will watch again! 👍😎
Aw, thanks! 😊
We are of similar size. I love that you show that women of our size have pattern options and what those patterns look like after all is said and done. My sewing list has gotten a little longer because of you. I may even try my hand at making a corset. Well Done!
I hope you give it a try! We definitely have some options...they're a smaller pool, but they DO exist! 😃
The comic sans thing had me rolling and my 6 year old has no idea why lol
I know, right?
Your skirt looks lovely. I have dyslexia so you have my sympathy on your visit to my normal! It’s a very annoying place where nothing is ever right way round! If it hadn’t been for the post no one would ever even known that you had visited!!

Oh, heck yeah! It turned out so beautiful. You look great in it and I'd be lying if I didn't say how seen I felt with you rocking it with a hoodie! I cracked up at your can't stop won't stop! I will use it as my mantra as I begin making my own walking skirt.

I carry around a small purse for my phone, cards, tissues, a badge for my work and keys because I don't usually have front pants pockets and even if they are there, it would be bulky AF. Now I'm thinking that I should make a couple of overalls with many many pockets so my stuff would fit 😂
I love that you admitted to your mistakes and talked about what you had to take apart and reassemble. I have to do it at least once every other project now, but man when I mess something up it's really messed up.
COFFEE came out my nose when you said, "It looked like ass." I'm so dead.
Bernadette is totally to blame! I’ve got the same pattern too, and am working on it right now.
Sounds like you have everything under control between the fanny pack and the rolling case! 😃
@@MaireColclough My attempt to stave off chaos 😬
My pockets are there for a colour co-ordinated handkerchief. I blame my mother for this. 😊
I may be guilty of stuffing my hands in my pockets...though I find it's much like any other habit - conquered with the substitution of MORE habits 😄
I always put my pockets in the modern way regardless of the HA
I think you did a spectacularly fabulous job with this. It does not matter how you get there, just that you do.
As to the pocket thing, I am a sacriligious b$&@h because I don't like putting pockets in my skirts. I leave the sides with openings so I can make a tie-on type for if I need to carry my change purse or cards. I am not a phone person at all. The added bonus I found is that I don't have to worry about someone trying to rob me when I am checking out my own groceries. I can still be lumpy though, so I only use it if I need to.
Thank you!
I think your accommodation for tie-on pockets is fabulous!
Every time I see one of these cool walking skirts, I think "I want a cool walking skirt!" Then I remember that while I love the look of skirts, I don't actually like wearing skirts. Dang it! I need palazzo pants, I guess.
Or a stylish split skirt like Rachel Maksy and Bernadette have been making. Stealth trousers 😉
When you realised the errors I wanted to give you a hug and then pick up my seam ripper to help you. Well done for continuing. All too often we get the impression that we are the only ones to make mistakes like this. Rest assured, everybody does at some point. Some of us do it frequently
Thank you for being here in spirit 😊
You should! Comfy skirts are always useful, particularly in winter 😁
Well done in spite of the hiccups! A walking skirt is definitely on my long range project list. Also, the hedge hog pincushion is adorable!
Don't praise him too much...he'll want a raise 😁
A great save; from oops into a beautiful skirt (a seam ripper is everyone's best friend)!!! Love your hedgehog pincushion, too.
I adore that pincushion, probably way too much 😁
I love it it's so beautiful on you too. I absolutely adore your videos . I'm very glad I found you on UA-cam-
Girl, love the way this turned out!! I made a frustrating walking skirt a few weeks ago out of a heavy cotton twill...now for the broadcloth version! Which will likely be just as frustrating lol
Hey...you have some practice now...I bet it will sew up better than you think 😃
since I never go anywhere these past 2 years & next is not looking good either, I always have a hankie( all vintage of course) and paper towels in my pocket...I have cats....you look very nice in the skirt....came out lovely.
Thank you!
Hankies and paper towers are very underrated. Particularly if one has cats. 😃
It really shows how behind I am on all my CosTube watching that I only just watched this 😅 Such a lovely video and your skirt turned out gorgeous! Sorry that the pockets gave you a hard time ❤️
Thank you!
It all turned out well in the end, and that's what matters 😃
That turned out beautifully.
And secretly wearing yoga pants is the best thing about long skirts.
How many yards of fabric did that take? I have a walking skirt on my to do list, but I'm not sure how much wool to budget for. 🤔
I think we bought 5 meters, but didn't use all of it. I think there's enough left over for a waistcoat (if I'm thrifty!) 😃
@@MaireColclough Sounds perfect. Thanks 😊 now I just need to find the right fabric.
Hey...no reason why you can't make a shorter walking skirt. Let that hem go up (but keep the gathers over the tush. They're essential) 😃
@@MaireColclough 👍🏻
you look lovely in this skirt. Just a winner girl!
It turned out so nice! You look great!
Thank you 😁
I keep my key's, wallet and phone in my pockets, sometimes even a pack of gum. I really hate purses!
I've always been on the fence when it comes to purses. If I can get away with not using one, then so much the better. 😄
Your persistence is admirable. As is the skirt. Bravo!
Thank you! 😄
This is me in ever project, but without the cool reveal at the end. I think Is sewed something wrong about 4 times in my last project! Usually give up! LOL But I am enjoying my sewing journey! I'm glad you are too!
Keep at it...it DOES get easier.😃
Cute as hell! I love it.
So beautiful!
