    Very good video and appreciate your thoughts of the Kelvin 300.
    It's also nice to see people actually receiving a product haha.
    Kelvin has great customer service and usually really fast response time to emails but are currently plagued with production delays.
    I have ordered the 8 Play pro light kit and their 600 lights.
    The play pros were suppose to come out months ago with a new release date of the 8th of march but it's the 27th and still nothing.
    I'd rather wait for a quality product than rushed with shoddy build quality but Kelvin is a new company and it shows

      Thanks for watching! Unfortunately I don't really know too much about what goes on behind the scenes. Hopefully you get your lights soon, they're definitely my go tos for color accuracy at this power level.

      @@thegranitegaffer Oh yeah no worries. Actually in the time I posted this comment, they've been really good and compensated me for the delays with a free light.
      They say they are also very confident that everything will ship next month so all is good. Can't wait to try it out!

    Your reviews are getting better Tyler. I appreciate that you went through the trouble of measuring out all the color metrics and graphing them alongside the Aputure light as a reference. I like that you discovered the interesting pattern trying out the light with the Aputure Spotlight Mount. That detail is a really fun one I hadn't discovered when I was playing around with the light. I would have also noted how difficult the Aputure Fresnel 2x is to remove from the bowens mount on this light. I would like to see a bit of B-roll showing off the touch screen to help to illustrate its functions to people. This light is a good start but until they offer a full line of Fresnels, Snoots, and spotlight modifiers, it doesn't seem like a light that's really ready for use on set.

    • @thegranitegaffer
      @thegranitegaffer  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching the whole thing! I realized the fresnel 2x mistake after I uploaded lol but I do agree I should have shown that, I ended up needing a flathead screwdriver to get it apart for the curious. Hopefully they develop some lensing modifiers for this lineup!

    Yeah very hard to compete against the 600c, putting aside rgbww vs rgbacl… just seems if you’re making a COB you gotta have fresnel, projection etc… if the 300 head isn’t half the size of the 600c and is same price that’s def going to be a very tough sell… also not sure I really understand the point of these diffusion disc, seems kinda sloppy almost COB style old
    School par lens approach, no?

    • @thegranitegaffer
      @thegranitegaffer  7 місяців тому +1

      Curious your thoughts on rgbww vs rgbacl?
      I think the disc's are pretty much for that extra half stop you get without them. And I'm sure there's probably some evening to the spread, I just don't have a good spot in my apartment to test that. They do have a noticeable effect on the width of the beam spread though, so I'd definitely use the d90 when using a larger softbox.
      I agree manufacturers really need to have all the lensing modifiers ready to go at launch. Using a light professionally without them is near impossible, so it's hard to justify the investment until the modifiers come out.

    • @Cinegavo
      @Cinegavo 7 місяців тому

      Agreed about the fresnel. But I see myself using the diffusers. I think rgbacl chips just really aren't the best for hard light and they might as well mix those emitters before being sent though a modifier like a lantern. Ofc the beam will become less intense but I would rather that than things like double shadowing and weird artifacts that that creates

    • @Robinbobin
      @Robinbobin 5 місяців тому

      but you can use any bowens mount modifier right?

    • @AlmightyUniden
      @AlmightyUniden 4 місяці тому +1

      @@Robinbobinyes you can
      I recommend looking at the review of the Kelvin 300 on the channel Gaffer and Gear where he goes deeper into the pros and cons of using third party fresnel.
      Let's just say you can tell it's a first generation product. As much as I love the design, there's nothing like having 5000 people telling you their thoughts on a product in real life situations to really get a feel if it works or is just pretty.
      I think they got pretty close tho

  • @12yfilms

    Thanks for the super honest review! The comparison to the 600C is not a deal breaker if you were looking at the Epos 300. I think the diffusers that Kelvin makes for the lights are a great approach to diffusion. I'm curious how far they can push these small diffusers and how much they can compare to softboxes, scrims, sheets, and so on. I think it would be awesome to properly (1/2 or 1-stop) diffuse an entire light source with their little diffusing disks. Thanks for sharing!

      Yeah but diffusing a small point source light your still left with a small point source light… seems, perhaps, more about beam angle control and less about diffusion per se. When we talk about diffused “soft” light it’s all about size and distance relative to talent. So these still seem more akin to par lenses to me….
