    It's good to see a bunch of INTELlIGENT tradesmen who think about their job and stay abreast of developments in tools and materials. I bet the guys who criticise you Roger, are the old stuck in the mud types who've been doing it all the same way for 30 years while the trade has changed completely around them.

    Nice work Buddy
    Only thing is the customer must be prepared to pay loads more for the sbr coating and the render meshing
    All good if they want it done properly
    But Just to apply the sbr by brush is a job in itself it ruins clothing driveways and anything it touches
    Its also expensive and to be quite honest it seals the blocks surface as it’s waterproof
    You are meant to apply your render over it whilst it’s still wet and this is very time consuming and stops you getting into a rhythm
    By using the mesh you are sandwiching the render on that’s the only reason that your scratch coat will hang on to the dried sbr , the small cement Particles mixed in with the Sbr are barley dust the render will not key to this unless it is still wet
    I use rendermesh on internal plastering that needs reinforcing , cracks etc and I always skim on tacky pva adhesive after I have first applied a sealing coat the previous day
    Render mesh is great but also slows the entire process down your infact putting 2 scratch coats on and cutting all of the mesh
    Loads more money !!!!
    I read Books and have been A Plasterer for 37 years
    I’m not a Jack of all trades I’m a specialist in this field
    Good vid though

    The reason we put waterproofer in the scratch coat is to stop the suction so you can get a decent amount of top coat before you pebble dash.When rendering in just sand and cement I wouldn’t put a waterproofer in any coat,especially the scratch coat unless you wanted to hang around all day to rub up

    • @jimichip
      @jimichip 3 роки тому

      Hi there,
      If you’re trying it for the first time I’d recommend a 14” trowel. It’s also worth having a straight edge about 3-4 feet long which can use to rule off the render that you have just spread on to show up any low or high spots in the render.

  • @pilot74sparki

    I was taught to do straight scratch lines because moisture can sit in the dips of a wavey lined scratch and cause issues - I have never had an issue with straight lines.

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  2 роки тому

      You are right about the moisture but wavy lines are much better for relieving stress from shrinkage of the cement.

      No Skills it doesn’t, but weirdly our building control officer doesn’t seem too bothered about anything, just random stuff like doubling up the hip rafter and additional locks on windows and doors!?! It’s good in some ways as we know what we’re doing and can just get on with it but worrying in others as he could let some proper dodgy stuff go on other builds. This is a door and frame chosen and bought by the client, it’s their house and their choice so they are lucky to have the BCO that has been assigned to the job. P.s I think it’s part L.

    • @graememaguire692
      @graememaguire692 4 роки тому +1

      Part L, is correct, and new controlled fittings (windows n door) should provide the correct U-value. Even if he signs it off, it don't comply and might get questions if they sell the house. 🤔

    Hi. interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Was this render going onto thermalite blocks? If yes, how do you get the time to spread it on the wall without the blocks sucking the moisture out as soon as it touches the wall? And, are you saying you don't need to use waterproofer in the 1st or 2nd coat?

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  4 роки тому

      Hi Lee
      When rendering onto Thermalites you always need to apply a slurry of cement and SBR with a little bit of sand thrown in. You could use Rendaide as an alternative. You need a good key and a suction killer and these products do both. There is no need to use waterproofer, it locks moisture in. The reason plasterers use it is to give them more working time.

    Here's a question wonder if anyone in the SB community can help me. I've picked up a workshop extension for free. It's a prefab concrete unit with approx 50cm x 80cm panels. I'm wanting to render it up to match an outdoor kitchen and seating area I want to make in the garden. The other option is bolting battens and cedar cladding.
    Has anyone successfully rendered using suitable skrim and flexible render over prefabs or has anyone had bad experiences?

      It was a genuine mistake, that part of the building was built on an existing foundation but I took one course of bricks out too many when I took the old building down. However, it has actually been a blessing in disguise, we have only filled in the outer skin on top of the door frame and as it is an inwards opening door it has left a perfect recess for a roller blind which won’t interfere with the door opening.

    What are breeze blocks?

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  4 роки тому

      It is a bit of an archaic term now but still comes up high in the search rankings. It is really a building block with air in it. They used to be made from flyash from power stations and cement. The problem is they were quite acidic and corroded the wall ties. The new variant is an aircrete block made by Thermalite and Celcon, to name but two.
      This involves throwing a handful of zinc filings into a mix sloppy mix of cement and sand. The zinc reacts with the cement and causes bubbles like in an aero chocolate bar and this produces a lightweight block with very good insulation values.

      Nobody knows what he is making in there. Ian was self isolating before the phrase was invented. Give him some wood and some tools and you can leave him in there for months.

      @@SkillBuilder soon it will take 30 min to watch 5 min of one video as it is on sky. It’s bull and you know it. You will soon realise as less and less people watch. It’s just wasting people’s time end of. And given the type of channel this is I can’t see many builders watching countless advertisements. It’s not just your videos don’t take it wrong way. I remember watching you tube and there was no advertisements. Better of just getting stuck I. And teaching yourself instead of sitting in front of the tv.

      @@monsterg4603 O.K I accept that adverts are often tedious but there is a subscription option that gives you ad free content. That seems entirely reasonable. What I find difficult to understand is why people expect something for nothing yet they do nothing free for anyone else.

    Idiot question coming up :- Why the mesh and scratch coat?
    I sorta thought the mesh replaced the scratchy

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  4 роки тому +1

      No such thing as an idiot question. The mesh is there to help prevent the cracking that occurs with aircrete blocks.
      The scratch hold the next coat. If you had concrete blocks or brick you might not bother with the mesh but would still have the scratch coat.

    • @SkillBuilder

      We monetise our videos because we find poverty pretty annoying. We don't control the ads, that is Google.
