  • Today I start my journey to review every single Lego handheld game developed by TT games. I've always had a huge fascination with these games as a kid. So, I start this journey off with the very glitchy Lego Star Wars II on the DS.

So happy to see someone giving love to the Handheld versions, which are great games in their own right. The only way to identify the "fixed" version is the back of the game card AL7EN0 codes are the broken version, AL7EN1 codes are the fixed version. The fixed version was only released in the USA.

I remember softlocking my save file as a kid, you could enter a level and choose free play and then leave, and keep the free play menu on the bottom screen for some reason. I probably played this game more than any of the other lego games I owned on DS as a kid, even as a dumb kid I could tell how absurdly janky it was at nearly every corner but I liked it a lot for some reason despite remembering the near exact same frustrations at the battle for endor level, I didn't even know there was a re-released patched version but after checking I even had the original release version and still somehow played it enough to nearly 100% it twice as a kid without even really going out of my way to.

I remember playing this as a kid, still remember how terrified I was to some of the levels, like the last one vs Palpatine, sandbox one, Jabbas palace, the cloud city levels and of course that RE reference. I also remember how easily one can just go out of bounds in this game, how choosing palpatine would crash the game and the vs multiplayer mode with bounty hunters, now that was cool. Oh right and one time I booted up the game entered to my main file but when I did the doors to choose the chapters were all locked, good times. Overall I still love the game even tho its has a lot of issues

I remember how i wasnt able to beat the level as a kid for a long while cause all these camera problems, lags and bugs. I had some fun with the game as a kid but all those problems made my experience way worse.

I have to correct you on that. It wasn't Star Wars that saved Lego, it was Bioncle that did. Lego had to pay LucasArts for that license which didn't help due to how costly it was. Bioncle was Lego's original ip and they were able to keep every cent that made of that.

Bro this game was a wild ride playing it as a kid. I had my fun with it but I could tell how buggy it was, finding multiple consistent crashes and softlocks and all sorts of weird stuff.
Also the Scooby-Doo door chase thing at 12:24? I had no idea that was in the game because the cutscene was actually bugged on my copy (it would show that first clip of Leia and the Stormtrooper running down the hallway but nothing afterward for the rest of the scene, I guess the doors were stuck closed on my version so they'd never come out)

  • @fanb1536
    @fanb1536 Рік тому +12

Back in the day, Lego Star Wars was indeed popular, but it wasn't what saved Lego from bankruptcy. Honestly, the cost of the license meant that back then, Lego Star Wars was only really able to just about break even.
Now, as for what actually saved Lego from bankruptcy? Old Lego fans who hate Technic will never admit it, but it was Bionicle. It was extremely popular, and as a point of fact, I believe it was in 2003 (might've been 2002?), Bionicle was THE ONLY THEME AT ALL that Lego was turning ANY profit from.
It really puts into question just how sustainable heavy license reliance really is; I mean, I've bought two Lego Star Wars sets within the past year sure, but I know for a fact that all my friends are sick and tired of the same franchises getting merchandise all the time. I think Lego might start seeing the ugly side of this fatigue quite soon, especially since they barely have anything original at all nowadays...

Kids on DS are absolutely screwed when they got this for Christmas. The game is rushed to release with the other consoles (Obviously) but also the Star Wars Silver Screen/Theatrical DVDs which all George Lucas and his team did was just record an old Laserdisc, slapped them into discs and called it a "day". They are widescreen, but in 4:3 no matter what display you watched them on so the actual movie is tiny with four black bars hugging it. Not that George Lucas cares because he wants you to watch his Special Editions with dated CGI (Han Solo and Jabba talking to each other in the first movie is infamous), stupid changes (Like Darth Vader saying "No!" before grabbing Palpatine and throwing him and Hayden Christensen replacing Sebastian Shaw as Anakin's Ghost and Greedo shooting before Han shot first and saying "Maclunky") and other stuff because George Lucas is insecure. Sorry if I had gone off-topic for a moment, but this and George Lucas' Special Editions among other stuff like Disney owning Star Wars, Star Wars Sequel trilogy and Star Wars games by EA are major Glup Shitto!

I remember having this game and as a kid I would have had no idea there were 2 versions on the ds, and unfortunately I had the un-patched one. I never 100% it because the battle of endor level among many was so broken, even more so in free play. The sandbox level I had no idea what it was and it displayed you can collect minikits so I spent more time in that level all fpr nothing and it was incredibly bizarre, there was the giant worm on that asteroid which comes out of the desert near the far end of the level. That bounty hunter mode I do remember playing it somehow and it was competitive co-op and that sounds like it had potential but it didnt run well in conjuction with the rest of the game. The level I do remember was jabba's palace and that was this tall tower with big drops. Using boba fett would be best for the level and thats all I remember. Some big bugs I didnt see in the video were lighting where all of a sudden the level would turn pitch black and you cant see where you have to go but you can still see your characters. I don't even know which minikits were broken and if I remember correctly or not, in the hub room for return of the jedi you can do something with trap door on the floor.

This was legit my first real video game I owned (outside of my Dad’s NES). I got it for Christmas one year along with my DSi. I remember really liking it and, tbh for what it was trying to do, I still don’t think it’s that bad.
But yeah, the slowdown was atrocious, there was a ton of weird shit that wasn’t in the console game, and that Endor level haunts my nightmares to this day. I remember spending forever on it as a kid, thanks to all the damn platforming. And I also remember a similar section on the Sarlacc Pit level where you had to use C-3PO and make your way across differently timed falling platforms, and that level is also scarred into my brain. I despised it so damn much, even as a, like, 6-year-old kid.
I’m so glad I didn’t start getting into the habit of trying to 100% my games until long, LONG after I’d lost the cartridge. I doubt I had a patched copy, so I would’ve driven myself insane.

I grew up with pretty much every TT Lego game growing up, both the console/PC and handheld versions. They're probably why I'm so fascinated with multiple different versions of the same game and just how different yet similar they can be despite trying to depict the exact same thing and developed with the same purpose. I also find it disappointing how ignored these "inferior" versions of the games are, especially when they can be a very unique and fun experience even if you play them side by side with their primary counterparts, arguably just as fun too. I played those handheld versions just as much as their primary versions and to me feel like an entire secondary set to the library of TT Lego games that will unfortunately seemingly be forgotten for the most part and never acknowledged or rereleased due to being seen as an unnecessary waste of time when the primary versions are already available or could be made available in favor of those handheld renditions.
Star Wars II DS (alongside all of the GBA TT titles) was one of the games I didn't have but I knew it existed for just as long as the others that I did have. My cousins had a modded DS or DSi, I'm not sure which, and as far as I can remember it pretty much had a complete library of titles, or at least a very expansive list of them. While browsing this library I came across Star Wars II, of which I was aware of The Complete Saga on DS but not this. Curious as to if there was anything different or if it was simply the latter half of what was in TCS like the primary version, I decided to play it. For whatever reason the experience remained vivid enough in my memory that even almost a decade later and not having thought about it much, it was still something that came to mind every now and then. After my curiosity began to grow again, I had asked for it as something to receive for my birthday or Christmas. It ended up happening and I got to relive that short moment in time so long ago that although a very short time for only a single day remained something in my mind after all that time. The flaws were very clear and the experience quite frustrating at times due to how rushed and unpolished the game was (it didn't help that it was the initial release once I became aware of such a difference), but none of that mattered. I was too happy to finally return to something from so long ago. While I never completed the game, I did all of the story mode, quite a bit of Free Play, and messed around with the pretty weird variety of mostly auditory and visual extras. it is a pretty bad game, no doubt about that, but it still has such a strong presence of charm to me that helps keep it from being more than the buggiest and easily passable DS version of an amazing game. It will definitely remain one of my least played TT Lego games alongside the GBA titles which I tried a few years later through an emulator and found a bit too clunky for my liking, but I will still return to it at some point on repeat simply to reexperience probably the strangest and pretty obscure as of now title.
This same massive library is also where I discovered the prequel to Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story, Partners in Time. That was a title that identically both caught my interest and remained on my mind. It was to a much greater extent though, which led to me asking for and receiving it not long after those discoveries unlike Star Wars II which took a long time until my curiosity returned. My cousins' is also where I discovered the console version of Bionicle Heroes (of which I wouldn't even know there was a DS and GBA version until recently) through a PS2 copy. Due to my extreme love for Bionicles and inability to get a chance to play while I was there unlike their DS/DSi, I asked if I could borrow it and play it at home. Despite what may be a shallow game of which I found very disappointing yet understandable that you were quite negative about most of its aspects overall, it quickly became one of my favorite Lego games. I love it but can see why others such as yourself wouldn't be able to get into it like I did. I still love it so much that I continue to do from start to 100% playthroughs pretty often of it now on PC and have even contributed to the small but enjoyable modding community it has by making a mod for the game that replaces all the music with the soundtrack from the GBA version, of which another for the DS was already done as part of a bigger overhaul mod that transforms the PC version into a DS like experience via heavily altered visuals, audio, and gameplay. Let's just say that my cousins never saw their PS2 copy of Bionicle Heroes every again even after asking for it back multiple times as I was able to convince them time and time again to hold onto it just a "bit" longer. I basically stole the game without realizing I had pretty much held it hostage from them forever after getting the chance to take it home with me. I still have that copy as well, although I had played it to death because the disc is rather scratched with one of the levels consistently crashing making only some of it playable now. The same happened with my PS3 copies of Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Star Wars III, alongside my cartridge of NSMB's art becoming faded with it and DS copies of Plants vs. Zombies and The Complete Saga becoming iffy with the DS trying to read them and GBA cartridge of Super Mario World I had eventually splitting in half at its seam from so much use yet still usable if I inserted the two halves with the internal piece inside the halves correctly although very easily disturbable and therefore prone to crashing if touched wrong. Saving stopped working on that SMW copy as well meaning I had to play the game from start to finish if I wanted to play the whole thing which led to me leaving my DS on for weeks at one point with only SMW in it and making extra sure it was charging and unlikely to be disturbed at night while asleep or not at home as a desperate attempt to hold onto a complete save as long as possible.
I'm sure I've made it clear just how deeply I love these games and video games as a form of media in general. Nothing will every be better in my opinion than that because I've been so deep into video games from a pretty young age and still hold series that I've played from then up to today very dear to me and will always return to them eventually if and when I can. It's especially not surprising that Lego is one of those seeing as Lego Batman was one of my first big game experiences. Although even then I had been playing PC games like the Luxor series and and a varying large array of 2000's puzzle based PC titles before that. Video games are cool.
