A major example of a version of water diversion is the engineering of the Chicago River from it's drainage into Lake Michigan and reverse it to drain into the Mississippi River to serve Chicago for sewage and Commercial navigation.
Amazing program. It makes you wonder about the alterations to hydrology that were made and the effects they had. Surface and groundwater issues we are now seeing. The ecological plant and animal communities that have shifted as a result, such as the rich fens and riparian habitats. The effect that mining might have played, and also communities on either side of the slope. The future of Colorado!
I went to Western and Mesa had both Schultz and Vandenbusch as professors. They both seen i was a dumb tired jock and made me drop their history classes. After that we had a mutual respect for one another. They wernt going to let me sit in a class and fail. Both these guys are walking encyclopedias. Top notch Drs.
have been watching R M PBS for a short time ,i like the videos i see.have just subscribed, look forward to more excellent videos thanks from east sussex uk.
We are about to rewrite water laws all over the West. We need to start prioritizing "food" water over landscape water, getting rid of coal water, and making existing agriculture more drought tolerant, and water efficient.

@@ambermcmahill536 we were talking about that at the plant. We were wondering if avoiding rock slides was the intent or to simply find a narrow spot for the dam? The plant is surrounded by large scree fields on either side so not so sure about that location being selected other than it was where the river turns pretty hard and the vertical drop could be attained for power production.
Amazing program!! Wish I could have seen all of these projects/construction in person but this amazing footage makes me feel as if I am there. RMPBS has gained another subscriber.
I don't mind Denver using our water. But not to give it to California.Which has sebveral desalination plants that they haven't used. This water, could help people in the other states. If Dubai can do it,we can too.
My son lived near Denver and that side did need water. We took a day tour and saw the Moffet tunnel. We had to wait for a coal train so we missed basic snow board training.
Really interesting, thank you for putting us together. All of these projects unfortunately create unnatural results: people and crops where they should not be.
I rode thru the Moffitt Tunnel twice and saw Estes or Winter Park . You can only see so much from the Train and I thought the ride up was my piece of the Front Range . I have Driven over and been thru Grand Junction more than a couple times . I never knew so much water was diverted thru the Front Range . I have seen dry Rivers in Arizona so have been exposed to some of this . Living in the East this is an eye opener , thank you for the Video . Plan 2014 has been Bypassed and the St Law Seaway will not open till April First this year . Lake Ontario is Too high for the 3rd year . They have to let some out . All of these plans and Compacts do not always Work the way it was thought they would .
Here we are now dealing with a water shortage in az and yet they keep building and people keep flocking here. So theyll want to leave because there wont be any water
By the time the Fraser River gets down to the Pacific coast where I live it’s swollen muddy brown but it would be so cool if it could be split and piped to the lower states (or intersect with the Colorado River!) instead of it being wasted to the sea!
@@scotcoon1186 . Yes, the Delta smelt a non-native species in the waters in northern part of California is protected thus all the water in its habitat flows out to the Sea instead of being I used for agriculture and water supply.
I feel sad when I see the Hoover Dam (2018) and the water level behind it. When looking down the spill ways and their tunnels through the sides of the canyon gives a scope to the scale of what the river could deliver. Never again will they be used.
The spillway at Hoover Dam has only been used twice. Once in 1941 and once in 1983. As one dam designer said, 'The use of spillways at dams is only due to poor management.'
I like how this “Dr Limerick” goes “people prone to rambling find their limit here” as she’s rambling 😂😂😂 All she does is ramble with that mouth that barely opens. “Pike declared it a wasteland prematurely” And it’s literally becoming a wasteland as we speak 😂😂😂 it sounds like the ramblers have met their limit 😂😂😂😂

At least Colorado is letting y'all leave a comment. Until the last drop.california doc.vidio about water won't.
I never knew how much water eastern Colorado took from the western slopes and for how long it's been doing it.

Don’t know why but I dig your comment, keep adventuring Sir!
If it's wetter than normal when we find it, it's not a drought when it returns to normal.
9:46 wow he’s 100% spot on, I’m from Roaring Fork/ Frying Pan river valley and only rarely thought of it as Eagle/Pitkin/Garfield county. Bravo PBS!

Really cool history. Makes me happy to be a part of it at Shoshone!
I am so Happy the mudslides missed Shoshone power plant. The engineer who put it at the base of that solid cliff was a genius.

Congressional and state senate districts should also be drawn along watershed boundaries.

Half the water in the San Joaquin goes out to sea unused because of a fish.
The 80% allotted to ag, is really 40% of the total flow.

The lakes are drying up! Why don't we drop in a bit of Antarctica? :o
Amazing. I knew some of this but not the extent of it!
if you think of the East west dispute as a smaller version of what the US/canada water wars will be and the US *WILL* get all Canada's water
Now Denver is digging pits along the South Platte so they can pump the "ground water" that seeps out of the river back upstream to the city.
Not really
💪
This is what Powell and Mead are really dealing with.
Powell for President
More Duane Vandenbusche! Former Western students know....
Use the TBS machine tunnel to Canada and bring excess water to the Colorado river.
