This video has helped me to set up my dryer exhaust pipe properly. We recently purchased our first fixer upper home and I have been becoming more acquainted with my hands in the process. Videos like this really help people like myself, who have an idea of tools but not an extensive knowledge of the different kinds. I just wanted to say thank you for the help
as always, another great video for the beginner! if you are using a large holesaw through really hard and thick material (e.g., i was drilling plumbing holes through 1" hardwood decking in a truck) it can make things go faster if after you get started and the bit teeth are just beneath the surface you drill a couple smaller with a regular bit along the inner circumference. that way, the sawdust will just fall-through, and the teeth won't get all gummed-up.
Im a woman, beginning to love wood working. watching and following the advice in this this video, i learned the trick. Then i applied the trick to my hairdryer , straightener project and viola! A perfect circle clean cut.
Great to know, just trying to learn to maintain my own houses. Finding yourself single with two houses is definitely expensive so doing all I can to handle what I can. Love your channel. Thanks for doing it. Lisa
Finally found a video that’s explained what this bit was for, bought my first drill and drill bit set a while ago and I had no idea what this bit was used for until now
@@crapstirrer No... scary shit is when you have a 5-6" hole saw chucked up in a benchtop drill press, you have the piece clamped down with c-clamps, and the teeth bind so bad in the 3/4" plywood you're boring it makes the whole drillpress jump and buck. Actually tore one of the lag bolts mounting the press to the bench free. Almost lost my left middle finger that day.
As usual, great video. I've found while working with smaller stock, using a drill press helps ensure the hole is perfectly vertical through the wood. Thanks. Keep them coming. Always good to be reminded that I really was as smart as I thought I was. :)
Thank you for your content. I learned a ton. question? How you do make a hole in a the middle center of a Cylinder-like wood object [picture a Hourglass like figure] , without having splitter wood on the inside.? .
Nice video that is helpful to me personally. I've seen photos of people putting tape down by the entry point of the drilling. I assume this helps prevent fraying of the wood surface. Can you help expand on this? Thanks.
I want to use the part the hole saw cuts out, so I need to keep it as straight as possible as I don't want to reduce the size by excessive sanding afterwards. Any hints on keeping it straight without a drill press??

If you can't lever it out with a small screwdriver, unscrew the cup and drive a long screw (longer than the cup itself) through the wooden plug. Keep going and it will hit the back of the cup, pushing the plug out.
Thanks for this! I want to make a shelf and stand for my plants but I wasn't sure which tools I needed to make my holes. I was thinking I could maybe make smaller holes with my hand drill..but I want a consistent round predictable circle.
Thank you, which holesaw bit kids do you recommend? I could not find the links that you mentioned. Do the whole soffit come with the pilot bed for the middle of the hole? I hope you’re recovering well from your knee surgery.
Great video. It might have been useful to discuss how to remove the wooden plug from the bit once it’s cut. I’ll bet many newbies don’t know how to do that.
What would you recommend for a hole cutting saw set with a quick release chuck? I need it to have a one six inch Hole saw in the set. Thank you and I like the videos Keith
Hey Keith, I wish I had a good answer for this, but I just haven't found a good set with a 6" quick release! My Bosch set runs up to 2-1/4" I think (pretty common lockset diameter). I'll keep my eye out for larger diameter quick release bits, and see if I can work something into the show. Thanks for watching!
This would be ideal for me, but I'd like to use the wee circles. How do I get around the centre bit creating a hole in the circle. I don't want the wee hole just a nice circle. Thank you
I need to cut some plug holes in the back of a bookcase, but the back is just 4mm oak veneer. Would you still use a hole saw for this, given that it will be difficult to drill halfway through and then finish the other side? Other problem is I cant remove the backing onto a workbench, so I will have to drill it vertically, in situ. My idea at the moment is to duct tape a piece of scrap to the rear, and use a hole saw to drill right through in one go. Do you think this would work ok? Thanks
Yes, back it up with scrap and drill through both at once, carpii! Drill from the side that you want to look nice-if there’s blowout, it’ll be on the backside.
Good video. How do you get the wood center that you drilled, out of the inside of the hole saw. I have one hole saw that has the wood stuck inside of it. So, now it cannot be used until I get the wood out of the hole saw. I guess I might use a Dremel tool to cut it out.
I’m about to do this in my ceiling. The problem is we have plywood then Sheetrock. I’ve used these prior on my own house and seems the hole saws burn out after not that much use. Get a couple of holes and tends to hardly cut. Do you know of a better tool because I have 53 holes to make and each is going through Sheetrock and 3/4 plywood in the ceiling to put recess lights through the house. I really don’t want to be purchasing 20 of these to get through the job.
Is there a way to do this without going all the way through I want to make a perfect whole like this, but like halfway through a piece of wood, not all the way through
Lol, I remember when I used one of these for the first time, I got the cut off cylinders stuck inside the hole saw. Couldn't for the love of me, get them out. It was a headache to remove esp. bec. I was a total noob at that time. 😂😂
Defiantly for the drywall cutout, Dale. They zip through drywall. If you’re taking the hole down through flooring, it may take a while. But they cut so clean it’s hard to argue for another tool in that application. You’ll definitely want a corded drill to turn it there.
@@TheHonestCarpenter I have skim coat plaster on blue board but I'm guessing that is fine as well. Then I need to go through the exterior plywood sheathing then through the cedar clapboards. Thank you for reminding me to attack from the outside after the pilot breaks through. This will keep the edge clean on the cedar clapboards. You have good videos. Thank you!!!
Beaver starts playing with his father's unplugged drill. When Larry comes over, he tries to goad Beaver into plugging it in to drill real holes. Knowing he isn't supposed to play with his father's tools, Beaver refuses. But Beaver doesn't stop Larry from doing it, with Beaver even holding the piece of wood Larry is going to drill into up against the garage wall. When the resulting drill holes result in holes in the garage wall as well, Beaver knows he's going to get into trouble when his father sees what happened. Indeed, Ward feels that the incident is more Beaver's fault than Larry's fault since Beaver knew directly from Ward previously that he was not to play with his tools. Angry that he is being punished for what he believes is not his fault, Beaver not only tells his father that he is going to run away, but defiantly (at first) walks out of the house in front of his father. But when Ward lets him go, Beaver seems confused but leaves anyway. The battle of wills is now not only between Ward and Beaver, but also between Ward and June who doesn't care about anything except the welfare of her son, even after they find out that Beaver is fine and over at the Mondello's. Wally is the one who provides the voice of reason, or at least the voice of what it feels like to be a child pushed into a corner.
