  • As we got ready to drop the 451 Stroker into the engine bay of 73ChargerChic's 1973 Dodge Charger we started discussing the cleanliness of the bay. Wouldn't that big beautiful 451 Mopar look better if the engine bay was cleaned up and painted to match the body? Maybe throw some paint on the under side hood? Well in order to that we need to clean everything up so it's time for some degreasing and cleaning products to see what they do!
    Since we needed to strip the decades of grease and grime from this thing we figured why not do a video comparing some different products to see just what works and doesn't work. Now this is in NO way a professional or controlled circumstances kind of test BUT, maybe it's something interesting for people to see done? We were doing it anyway so might as well film it.
    So, what all are we using? This is a Gunk Engine Degreaser vs Easy - Off Oven Cleaner vs Super Clean vs Simple Green challenge! Well, not really a challenge. Anyways, maybe it's something worth watching to see just how these different types of cleaners stack up to engine bay grease.

    I've always used Gunk. Over the years it has, unfortunately, gotten weaker because of the EPA stupidity but it's still good. In the ol' days you wanted to stay away from rubber and wiring. It would turn rubber boots, etc. to snot in the 60's. Yea, I've been working on cars THAT long. Definitely the good ol' days.

      Gunk is STILL the gold standard in heavy duty engine degreasers. There's always a can on the shelf in the shop but you are correct keep it away from rubber / plasti / wiring for sure!

      This is definitely WAY outside the norm of videos for us but.. maybe something we do more of? Oven Cleaner can definitely cut through some stuff but MAN will that smell get you!

      We are unfortunately in a bit of a holding pattern on her Charger so figured while we were we could get the engine bay painted. There's a WHOLE lot just on the horizon for her and this project... it's just taking a frustratingly long time!

    Definitely Gunk is the way to go for the big buildup of stuff . Purple power is another good product to help elimanate the years, years and years of disgusting. Can't wait to see more video's of bringing life back into this beautiful car.

      After we finished this we totally realized we should have also included Purple Power as one of the "Go To" cleaners. Definitely a bottle we ourselves we reach for when it comes to shop messed.
      Can not WAIT for this Monster to come back to life and for her to finally get to enjoy it!

      We are DEFINITELY fans of the Gunk products and use them ourselves as well. Just have to be a bit careful with them around plastics rubbers and electronics

    I use Export Engine Degreaser at least thats what we call it here in oz and a good pressure washer. If its really bad ill go over it a second time and usually comes out great. Ready for sanding and then paint. Dont mind these videos as its all informative and if Katrinas in them you could be baking a cake ill watch

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  3 роки тому

      Next step after this was DEFINITELY hitting it with a pressure washer there's decades of grime caked and baked everywhere.
      We were definitely wanting to get her back on camera with her car, lots of her fans have been missing her while it's been down. I'm sure she appreciates the support!

    Simple green is actually pretty good, probably the most expensive bottle of degreaser.

    After working on aircraft and boats as well as cars all my life I would be a bit leery of oven cleaner in any place that I couldn't be sure that I got every bit of it off. Corrosion (rust on cars) is accelerated by harsh chemicals. Its a real problem on aluminum parts on aircraft and any metal on a boat. Gunk is the industry standard because it works and I think its petroleum based so wouldn't cause corrosion down the road.

    I hope that is pressure washed real good before it's painted

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah this is definitely a multi stepped process to get that bay cleaned. Step 1 get the grime removed, Step 2, pressure wash, Step 3 sanding, Step 4 more washing, Step 5 off to paint!

      @@johndillinger8482 indeed. Have to remove everything, pressure wash, scuff sand, then paint. Going to also use this opportunity to clean up the rats nest of wiring!
