The Tech 21 SansAmp Character Plus Series with Josh Scott (VOX - Fender - Marshall - HiWatt)

- The Tech 21 Sans Amp Character Plus Series is an effort to capture the feeling and sound of different eras and families of different amplifier brands. Each unit represents a brand and carries an entire lineage. This is a way for players to have access to many different amp sounds without having to spend the money on multiple amps! The first Character Series units were designed in 2008, but the new Character Plus series units came out in 2022. Josh was excited to get his hands on them. On today's live, Josh is going to spend some time talking about them and what they offer. And you know he's going to jam.

Thank you for giving Tech21 the credit they deserve. A show on them would be great.
1000% want a deep dive into Tech 21 history. Such an overlooked but everybody uses company.
Overlooked? Not if you are a bassplayer. I have a SansAmp Bass Driver since 2001.
@@nachobassman That is the thing; real-world use and proper acknowledgment differ.
@@EricBeam1313 Agree. A perfect example is Behringer GDI21/TM800. Those that don't know just call it "cheap tube amp in a box". That that know realize they are budget Sanamps GT2 in a plastic shell.
Would love to know more about them yeah.
@@Jestersage Youve made me very curious about the potential. Are you talking about blending the TO800 and the TM300 or is there a TM800 that I cant find? Either way thanks for the tip
I want a tech 21 episode with Andrew for sure. Sounds great and we want to know more
I'm using Liverpool by Tech 21 since 2017 and it's amazing! I'm playing it direct in the PA in every gig, it's perfect, it's my portable Vox
Nice one. I have an old cheap dodgy tube combo. I'm looking for a pre amp to run into a 30w digi power amp, into the cab. I've trued using a "pre-amp" style pedal like a Metal Zone but it's a tonal desert. I was wondering about one of these or a joyo.
One of the best shows ever, I said that because when you invest your time watching real content that gives you education, funny stuff, jokes, jams, watch your programing its only a few shows that actually needs, this is one of them
I've had the GT2 for years and it's my reference point for a good Marshal sound. It was like the third or fourth pedal I ever bought. Please do video on Tech 21!
Love Andrew and his products - have have the Liverpool and British on my pedal board since the came out. Perfect for Vox’ing and Marshall’ing my ‘70’s Pro Reverb (and Twin before replacing with the Pro) without having to own so many amps. Thanks Josh!
I'd love to see a Tech 21 show. I bought a SansAmp classic on eBay forever ago without even knowing it's connection to Cobain. I just wanted a cool pedal that could make my crappy solid state amp sound better. That pedal has been one of my most valued possessions, and I feel like it doesn't get the love that it deserves.
Tech21 is like the Korg of bass pedals. Always doing their own thing regardless of everyone else.
I’ve got a Bass Boost Chorus that I’ve used for years for both bass and guitar and a VT Bass DI. Both are great pedals. Tech 21 is criminally overlooked.
I had a Sansamp RBI for my bass rig. I ran it in front of my amp. Awesome tone. Makes any bass amp sound great. I also have the Tech 21 Fuzz Boost for my guitar. They make great stuff.
*Yes, please interview Andrew the Tech 21 guy:*
I'd really like to hear whatever he has to tell us about how his SansAmp pedals work. And how he developed them.
And anything else that comes up in conversation with him. 🙏
One thing I would love to see are some actual gig videos. I know this would take a lot of effort to set up, but it would be so valuable to once in a while see someone arrive at the venue with their rig and work with the sound person to set up and soundcheck. I would learn so much from seeing stuff like running with Sansamp straight into the board, or using an effects loop, or other stuff I "understand" but haven't experienced in a stage setting.
Did I miss the giveaway? That Screaming Blonde is a dream come true. 😃
+1 on a standalone Tech21 show. I remember seeing the ads in the early 90's with Doug Wimbish and have owned/gigged a Bass Driver since 2007.
Although there were enough challenges with it that I ended up selling it, I miss the delay on the original fly rig. Of all delays I ever used, I still miss that one!
Yes on a Tech21 show.
What a cool pedal!!! I want to get one just to have as a backup if my amp dies during a gig!
Hi Rich, you can get Cleartone JSMS silent jack plugs that are sensational. No clicks, buzzes or squeals when you plug in/out. Great when swapping guitars at gigs.
I'd get some but all the leads l got from Pete Cornish in London (at the time THE go to guy for pedal builds, amp repairs etc.) 30 years ago are still perfect, all colour coded. Perfectly silent when in use. He really new what he was doing.
Had a Tech 21 acoustic DI, hands down better sounding than the Baggs stuff, Emailed the company about a mod to mute the DI with the bypass footswitch, super responsive & accommodating. Basically the Cobain/Nirvana thing didn't seem to go to their head. Somehow they're making superior products while still remembering what it's like to be a normal musician with super picky taste. Thanks Tech 21 & thanks Josh.
Definitely would watch an episode about Tech 21
Would love to see you do more Tech 21 showcases, Andrew is amazing.
One of my favorite companies. The XXL will never leave my board - I have put many distortions and amps-in-a-box up against it and it has never lost.
I have one.....same thing.
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Some groovy licks and the tone is really sweet
Now that I know I can haul this pedal in the pocket of my Jeans.....I'm ready for the Gig! Thanks Josh.
Thanks & best wishes for a truly wondrous weekend!
I know Tech21 only by their midi Moose.. a fine piece of gear - but these sound great & I would love to see (your next) big Tech21 episode.
so cool. Just wish there was an insert point before the boost/screamer so you could add chorus, delay and send out through the DI. Still great, but hard to use the boost into mod pedals
I have a GT2 . The issue I have with Tech 21 SansAmp/Character series products is that they insist on forcing the cab sim filter on you. When I first got the GT2 and tried it as a pedal in front of my amp, myself and my bass player couldn't get over the weirdness of the sound. The cab sim filtration just doesn't sound great when going through a guitar cab (to me anyway). If they incorporated the option to bypass the cab sim in more of their products and maybe offered output signal level options (like AMT does with some of their pedals) I would own more of the Tech 21 stuff.
couldn't help but notice the oopegg in the background. awesome!
Yes please do a Tech21 special episode!
💪🏼
I had a screaming blonde 17 years ago that cost me a lot of money. This one looks pretty low maintenance. I might have to get one.
Susumu Tamura pour la TS808 en 1979 est le designer de la première Tube Screamer 😊
Hey Josh just finished watching “all that you need” basement show. It was great so real in polished and raw but with good real review of the sansamp series. Luv your approach just let it happen. Like Neil Young says to make mistakes is what makes us human. If it’s too perfect what fun is it. Keep ‘em coming brother nerdy geek I can’t afford most of this stuff but I love to keep up with the technology.
thanks for watching!! ❤️🔥
I have a Tech21 Fly-rig 5. I don't think much of it, used it once in a live stage setting. That was enough. It sits in the bottom of my gig bag in the event my amp blows up. It's a fail-safe.
Great video, amazing sounds and great playing.
Just love the Sansamp stuff, have had them for most of my guitar playing years, have 4 of the Classic's just to be futureproofed. :)
Absolutely do an interview with Andrew!
Yes! They're so good and Tech21 needs more clout!
thank you!
Yes! Please! Interview thaaaaat amazing human being !!!
I have to comment again half way through. That English muffin pedal definitely has a beautiful clean tone. I may pick one up now as a result.
I love these. I had a bunch of them in 2008-2009
I've owned Tri A.C.s for 20 years, Brit & Oxford character pedal clones from Joyo, BDDI from Behringer & Caline. DI or into amps, they always deliver.
Seeing a more fleshed out "what would a fan of X amp really want" version is sadly singing its clarion call to my wallet right now.
The character switch sounds almost like you’re moving the microphone, a different points on the speaker
Buy two Joyo American Sound or any two Joyo Amp Sound series then add a Boss Line Selector. There you have it, two different amps with their own EQs with the Voice Knob/Character Knob.
The other night I played a wedding with my Fly Rig V2, drunk guests were walking all over my gear with stilettos 👠, try doing that with a touchscreen pedalboard. The Delay sounds amazing
Be nice if they did a few bass specific models too.
Question - with an amp sim like this, if I set my guitar at, say, volume 5 with a clean tone, and the amp sim gain at the “edge of breakup”, and then I turn my guitar volume up, will the amp sim respond by breaking up / distorting, just like a real amp would? Or would I just get a louder clean sound? Curious whether it works the same way an amp does or not.
Is it fully analog (as those older pedals)?
I want a Screaming Blonde for FREE! 😢
... to use at the King Biscuit Blues Festival this year. Waaah! 🍼😭
(kidding/not kidding - LoL)
Anyways ... Would love to see an episode of Josh & Tech 21!
Tech 21 in my pocket n' pedalboard would be lovely...Please?
Love the channel but the basement bunker series is awesome albeit a bit dystopian.
Tech 21 have a mystery to them. Please do a show
I’m a big fan of Tech 21 and I’d love a full Tech 21 episode!
I would totally dig a Tech21 show.
It's a real shame Josh didn't use one of his vintage batteries to power the sansamp. A classic Radio Shack would have really opened up that Screaming Blonde. Did you know when Kurt used his Sansamp he exclusively used batteries made in Seattle?
That is a misconception. Actually, Kurt used Portland-made carbon-zinc batteries that were aged in melt waters coming off of the Cascade Mountains. But you're not alone in your error. Don't feel bad.
Gonna cast another vote for a history of Tech 21 episode. The VT Bass DI was the first pedal I actually bought once I started playing with a band as a bassist. Amazing what that little box can do without an amp right into a mixing board. It’s a low end thickener
i have dumb question: if Josh is going through the Kempler Profiler, set to the Solvek, isn't that combining two amp models? The tech21 pedal amp modelers and the kempler model?
And for us cheapskates, there's the Joyo American Sound, etc - clones of the Tech 21 stuff!
Would love to see more on Tech 21. Hands-down, Tech 21's FlyRig 5 V2 is the ONLY reason I don't sweat equipment failure at gigs. In addition to my Fractal unit, the FlyRig goes in my gig bag.
I've also done quite a few gigs subbing for the regular guitarist where I show up with that, a wah, my wireless, and a piezo-equipped solidbody guitar. All the tones - including acoustic, are right there.
I just plug right into the PA and go go go. Nothing can touch that!
I’ve got a few of the original Character Series pedals. They are my “secret weapon” for studio work. So many useful tones, and EQ knobs that actually do something! 😅
When Josh's hand came into view to tweak a knob and I realized how dang small these things are....
LOOOOOOOL
I would love to see a detailed video dedicated to Tech21. This company is so interesting :) thanks!
As a working bassplayer I can say Tech21 and their SansAmp pedals are the best in the market. I’ve using and abusing a Bass Driver since 2001 an there is nothing out there that can replace it. Brilliant pedals.
I play bass...
I’ve been using many versions of Tech21 SansAmp DI/preamp pedals since the mid ‘90’s.
They’re my live sound and never let me down.
Much better than the new Ampeg and Origin Effects stuff! I tried all of those too.
Tip: make good use of the blend knob! 100% full on is almost always just a little too much for bass, and use the ‘parallel out’ to go from the pedal to your bass rig.
🖖
Would be a great show on the history of Tech 21, I used a Double Drive, an XXL and had a Tech 21 Trademark 60 with a custom Tweed instead of the standard black as my main amp for about 10 years. Great stuff, as Josh said see there bass Sansamp pedals everywhere. Yes, yes please do a full show on Tech 21. Also my main guitar is a Revered Ron Asheton signature V with a Les Trem on it, so glad to see a Reverend Airsonic in Josh's hands
🙏🏼
Absolutely, please do a show. They are amazing at what they do and fantastic people.
I realized that they are located right in NJ and I cold called and stopped by and told them how much I loved them since I bought my original Sans Amp. They introduced me to Andrew. I had an issue with my Trademark 60 (outstanding amp!), and they said to bring it in and they would help.
And they did. They fixed it for me with a quick turnaround time.
They should be as big as all the rest. Not only because they are good people but they deserve it. Their stuff sounds great.
My Acoustic pedalboard has the Acoustic DI and it just sounds great.
My Bass Driver is such as easy way to get a bass sound on tape...
Love it!
The english Muffy sounds insane on bass. It NAILS that John Entwistle bass tone. tons of clank and grind.
Josh - great video! Please do one on their bass products! Tech 21 has been a back saver for bass players. I wish these had existed back in the day. Not just great for recording but amazing live. The tones you can get run the full gamut of styles and genres. Tech 21 are pioneers and we thank them.
Would definitely appreciate an episode on Andrew and Tech21.
I use the SansAmp Bass Driver and Para Driver in Parallel. I run the Bass Driver clean and the Para to the edge of distortion, so when I dig in it gets hekka crunchy. I can run my small Ampeg practice amps and sound HUGE.
Yes, please do a "Who Is Tech 21?" show. They made some cool amplifiers, too.
Yes, please, an in-deep episode with Andrew and Tech21.
I think a Tech 21 episode is waaaay overdue...
Tech 21 makes the coolest products
Thx for this video JHS crew! I haven’t tried these yet but they look cool! I use the TECH 21 fly rig v2 and the TECH 21 acoustic fly rig both as my main “pedal boards”! Cheers!
"let me know if i should interview Andrew"
Translation: "i already interviewed him and just haven't edited the video yet. Your input is pointless because its coming regardless. But comment anyway to drive up YT revenue pls" 😂
We need more Tech 21 SansAmp episodes!!!!
How does the Fender style one take pedals? I've been trying to find an analog preamp with high headroom I can run high gain pedals like the Revv G3, and low-medium gain overdrives like a Blues Breaker.
Asking the real questions 👏👏👏
@@TelecasterMaster1 yes, I mess with a lot of massive gain staging? Will the digital element break-up.
I love this series. I wish it was more affordable, but I guess they deserve the asking price. They take an amplifier manufacturer, make an “amp in a box” with a dial to capture various models and tones from that manufacturer; and then they pair it with a pedal that really compliments its sound, combos that have been famously used by artists (Marshall with a Fuzz Face: Hendrix; Hiwatt with a Big Muff: Gilmour; Fender with a Tube Screamer: Stevie Ray Vaughan). And the fact that they are things you can bring to a gig in a backpack instead of lugging huge vintage amplifier is an added bonus. I personally really want the English Muffy; it’s as close to a “Gilmour in a Box” pedal as you can get (along with the Keeley Darkside).
Is the fourth combination, Vox with a Rangemaster, inspired by Brian May tones? (My best guess)
@@echocollectors that’s my guess. It’s almost more of an “artist in a box” than an “amp in a box”, though the amps with the character dial are extremely versatile.
Vox with Rangemaster literally says Liverpool Mop Top on it. So. Beatles. He also says so at the beginning of the video
@@sub-jec-tiv True but I think adding the range master makes it a dual
Love Tech21, Love they're still running things themselves, Love they're still coming out with great stuff
I love these little… well, simply done videos, focusing on a couple pedals. They’re very interesting. I hope you keep doing them even when the regular show comes back.
The Tech21 dp3x changed my life! The sounds ive chased for years in a candy bar sized package.
I have been a nasty ole bassist for over 30 yrs now and there have been several pieces of Tech21 equipment that most bassists shouldn't live without ....seems Tech21 is making some good strides in the guitar dept!!!(which I have now been a NEW member of for two months !!!)....and I AM A BAMA BOY also!!!!
Thank you for this! My Sansamp has been on EVERY gig with me since 2008, and I've been on the fence about whether or not these units would hold up to that Tech 21 standard that I have in my mind.
Tech21 BoostDLA is still one of my favourite delays ever, great show Josh, a full Tech21 show would be great.
What I love is, after all the amp sounds we can use through modelers, effects, ect, we still only use the Marshall, VOX and Fender sounds.
You know, I think that at the end of the day there's only so many ways you can put together transistors and potentiometers, so really these are the main archetypes that all boutique amps belong to anyway
It’s amazing how those amps have the tones that every other amp manufacturer, both large and boutique, base their tones on. I guess you could add Hiwatt, Orange, and Mesa Boogie, but as great as they are, they are still downstream and derivative of Fender and Marshall.
The same can be said about guitars
Yes yes please! A Tech 21 episode! Their bass pedals alone could be an episode. The Dug Pinnick DP-3 and Geddy Lee pedals are game changers for recording and using stage D.I. for bass
I recently started using my T21 Liverpool pedal in conjunction with the CAB M from Two Notes, it's an awesome combo. (pun intended)
I've always loved tech 21 fly rig type pedals. You should make one Josh. An overdrive/chorus/delay combo would be great. 😊
Imagine a Mig 50 with an Angry Charlie for the plus switch. Call it the Miggy Smalls. You can have that one for free, Josh.
Reading the overview of the character plus series, these all sound INCREDIBLE. Tech 21 sansamp preamps, with additional speaker emulation, AND a built in effect that is famous for being paired with the modeled amp? That's an insane amount of things to put together. Even though I can't stand tube screamers, the screaming blonde honestly sounds like a friggin awesome idea and something that I'd kinda kill for. As a bass player, I've got the venerated programmable bass di that I've had since high school, so I'm well familiar with the quality and ubiquity of tech 21. I had no idea they dropped these recently, cause if I did, I'm sure I probably would've picked one up. Even though it'd absolutely kill the space on my board lol. Definitely something I'll keep an eye on
Hey Josh. This is my favourite kind of video that you do. Just you, speaking to us, playing for us and talking through your process. Thanks so much. More from the basement please!
These are pretty great sounding. Modelers and plugins can sound fantastic and have all the options you could ever want and I've used them a lot in the past, but these days I really much prefer a simple interface with knobs for recording, just dial in a sound, commit to it, and go. I use s Strymon Iridium now, I'm going to have to check these out some more.
Great video on these character plus pedals. They sound great and I’m definitely interested in checking them out someday. I wish I was home when you went live so I could’ve had a chance at winning the blonde screamer. I always seem to miss out on your giveaways because I’m always at work when the live happens. Bummer!!!
Thanks for sharing.
Take care
Absolutely would love to see an in depth interview with Andrew Barta. Thanks, Josh. Great work.
It’s crazy how many records have Sans Amp on them. Especially bass but also guitar. Sans Amp is no joke.
Loved the fuzzy brit, sounded great! Id just use the kemper remote and switch profiles and/or effects on the fly but this may have a place with my Deluxe!
Josh, for the bass community, highlight the Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus. Best bass chorus of all time, but discontinued and very hard to find these days.
I haven't played much Tech 21 stuff, but I understand the popular Joyo "XYZ Sound" pedals are clones of pedals in the OG Character Series, and I've played a few of those. They are very, very good.
Also: I smile every time I see the avocado album poster on your wall. Amazing album, very underrated.
First pedal I got was a Tech 21 Tri OD, it had 3 sans amp settings with drive and volume. I just wanted to be able to change the volume on my guitar by stepping on a pedal. The guy at the store told me 'that thing has tubes in it' . Had no idea what he meant in the late 90s, but I do now. Great pedal, many excellent sounds available.
I have a Line 6 HX Stomp, and I’ve set up many bass patches in it using various amp models, and just recently determined that the SansAmp bass driver DI model in it is pretty much the perfect tone.
This is amazing episode. I love the basement episodes! what drum machine are you using for these demos? Thanks
I have a VT Bass Deluxe, which seems to be out of production. Totally overkill: 6 presets, 2 inputs, etc. BUT... it sounds fantastic with all of my basses, AND gives me a great Stones early 1970's tone! I will never sell it, it's just tooooo good!
I completely agree and endorse Lari Basilio her album Your Love! It’s amazing and it was my most listened album on UA-cam music. I highly recommend it! Also I can’t wait to hear more about that signature pedal, I’ve seen it on her board, a purple enclosure of course with a big question mark on it 😊
What pedals would go in a JHS fly rig?
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Fuzz, chorus, and delay?
