- The TLBV or often called LBV 88 or just LBV, was an attempt to replace the ALICE with a complete vest. The idea goes back to the M1967 Combat Vest that Natick Labs abandoned only a few years into that program.
This piece of kit has a rocky history from the soldiers who used it. I’ve seen many anecdotal accounts that suggest the vest was not well received. Coming from my experiences with the successor, the MOLLE 2 FLC, this does surprise me a bit. Though I never had to use the LBV in the field so I'll trust for the most part those accounts.
I wish they would have done a mesh version with the vertical mag pouches before going to the enhanced with slanted pouches.
You can see pretty well how the IIFS and later SIPE program would lead to the development of the MOLLE. A lot of the core ideas of the LBV carry over into the FLC just without the added modularity of MOLLE. I couldn't fit everything I wanted into this episode. I was tempted to do just an overview on the IIFS instead, but maybe I'll save that for later.

I have this combined with ALICE for extra mags and carrying space and hands down the best option for long patrols

I still cant find the first version. I have 3 lbv88e with correct buttpacks. All are new old stock. I still prefer alice over these though. Ive put together several kits all new old stock. Some how i keep finding unused alice and iifs gear. I collect , plus use the gear during trainings and FTX's. For such "old" gear it still works great for the basic civilian rifleman. Highly recommend either alice or lbv88e , especially if on a budget.

Ive personaly seen it in training and national guard use as late as 2010.

I once saw it as late as 2018 at Ft. McCoy during my summer training with my Reserve unit.
