Bangladesh was a part of the “ British India” till Aug 14th, 1947. It was part of the unified state of Bengal ( the Indian side of West Bengal is still a state and Kolkata is the capital). The people are ethnically similar to the people on the Indian side and called Bengalis as well. The partition separated Bangladesh as East Pakistan and was part of Pakistan till 1971 when Bangladesh became an independent country. It was part of the Presidency of Calcutta during British India when Calcutta used to be the capital of British India.
Couple of things you want to do in Bangladesh
      1) Visit the Bangladesh side of Sunderbans. The highest number of tigers are in Sunderbans distributed between India and Bangladesh. Sightings might be a bit tough since it’s a mangrove swamp and delta region
      2) You should ride the Samjhauta Express to Kolkata. It’s the only cross border friendship train from Kolkata to Dhaka and back and it’s a unique experience. You will run into lots of people with ties to both countries with lots of stories.
They don’t speak Arabic in West Pakistan either. The Pakistani lingua frana is Urdu which is almost similar to Hindi.

I spent 3 months volunteering in the country back in 2015. The countryside is beautiful (though it's hard to find somewhere with no people at all, very densely populated) and a good community spirit means no one goes hungry. It's only cities such as Dhaka where there is massive poverty and it's frankly quite filthy - people aren't really from there, they just go as a means to earn a high salary, and so they just don't care about the environment or other people as much.
The locals are very curious. If you were to just sit down on a bench for 10 minutes I can guarantee that a crowd of intrigued people would surround you to simply watch you 😄
Also the only place I've been to in the world where people take to their fists to resolve disagreements publicly, very swiftly.

I've been waiting for this soooo long. I have followed you since the Estonia videos. Absolutely love the way you keep the vlogs very personal and raw exploration. I am from Bangladesh but I currently live in Canada for studies. It can be very hectic in Bangladesh at times and some scammers are there, like other countries. But mostly, you will find friendly people who get amused to see a foreigner.
As you know, Dhaka is the world's most populated city so my suggestion would be to visit other districts. Sylhet is full of tea gardens and waterfalls, Chittagong has mountain tribes and Cox's Bazar beach(Please visit St Martin island if you can), Rajshahi and Bogura are very clean districts with rich history (Mahastangar in Bogura has ruins of one of the earliest civilization in Asia), Sundarbans have Mangrove forest and Royal Bengal tigers (P.S. Cincinati Bengals name came from this) and lastly Bandarbans/Nilgiri (Hilly areas with monkeys and tribes)
Its probably cold now so idk how much you can explore but I'm sure you'll find some interesting stuff from above. Also don't forget to try the traditional food like Shutki(dried fish), Bharta(mashed), Duck, Red spinach, ilish fish and many other fish if you can. Other than that, food is mostly like India. Oh and please try western food here like burgers, pizza, Italian (not from American joints, like burger king) but from Bangladeshi stores like Chillox/Farmhouse.
Anyway, thats a lot of informationn, hope you find the time to read it. Enjoy your stay at Bangladesh and keep exploring the world 💙✌

If you see the condition of growth of Bangladesh economy, you will get many information which will be helpful to remove your ignorance. 'The GDP of Bangladesh will cross billion and go to trillion very soon' report says. The financial express says Bangladesh will be the 35th rich country within 2030 in the world. Our government vision is that Bangladesh will be high developed country within 2041 and it will be called 'Smart Bangladesh'. After taking government power, Bangladesh Awami League starts to build our country. All development has been developed within 12 years. From 1975 to 1996 and 2001 to 2008 Bangladesh was ran by the worst and criminal party. For that no development was developed in these time. But from previous 12 years Bangladesh has been changed. Bangladesh have taken many mega projects like metro rail,Padma bridge( which is the most challenging engineering in 21 century in this world), neuclear power plant(first time in Bangladesh), Bangabandhu tunnel(under Karnafuli river, first time in south Asia), Building third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal international Airport( will be most decorated and smart), Turning cox's bazar airport into international airport, Dhaka-Maya express way, Dhaka elevated expressway, Dressing of Paira seaport and turning into international seaport where any type of ship will be able to ran and park and can be load and unload goods. Now Bangladesh has started manufacturing car with Hyundai. This car will be used to fullfill the demand of car of Bangladeshi citizens and will be exported all over the world. 'Made in Bangladesh' will be common sentence in this world soon. Bangladesh is now 2nd country on garment sector. I don't want to make long this comment anymore. Learn about Bangladesh with good sense. You will be understood all if you have good mind.

it's not so much that they "don't care", but rather that there are so many millions of people in one place, living in an incredibly impoverished city. there are simply not enough resources and infrastructure to handle it. the residents are certainly to blame, but the government is also not putting in enough effort to remedy the problems. there are over 22 million people living in dhaka and it's surrounding area. to manage such numbers of people takes immense effort. compare that to a city like tokyo where they have a similar population. the difference there, is that there is sufficient taxes and reinvestment in the city that keeps it in order. dhaka is still has a long way to go to improve, but they are trying. it would probably take a century or two to get dhaka to the state a cities ike tokyo, paris or NYC are - and the country as a whole. poverty and corruption is an extremely hard thing to fix

I just would like to point out something. The British people colonised us rather than conquering us. The whole subcontinent was already a unified nation under the mughal which even includes some part of Afghanistan. The Brits basically came here and took over the region that was controlled by the mughals using various nefarious ways for "business". But I do agree that the difference between the 2 words is somewhat blurry. We were conquered by various kingdoms from mughals to Turks to Persians but not the British. There is a difference between colonisation and conquering. Bengali people didn't just become Muslims due to conquering. Islam also doesn't spread by sword. We became majority muslims mainly due to Muslim preachers, Arab/Turks/Persian merchants who came to Bangladesh during the 1400s. Bengali is also a very different language compared to Hindu. The root of Bengali is not Sanskrit, it is Madhya prakrit. Madhya prakrit was a language spoken by people in the far East of South Asia. But yeah due to mixing between Hindi people, Urdu people, Arabic and etc etc people the original Bengali language has somewhat diluted. We Bengalis can understand Hindi people due to Bollywood but Hindi people cannot understand us. So the two languages are actually not so mutually intelligible. And the writing script is also very different.

Great to see you in Dhaka, Gabe! This is travelin'
Makes me think of the George Harrison song "Bangladesh" from 1971 about the war and famine. Hope you get out of the capital. The ferries are quite an experience but i think they've retired all the old 1900s "rocket" paddle steamers by now, or they have sunk. From what I see, there are much nicer ferries to travel on now. Waking up on the river is something you will never forget. For what it's worth, I crossed the land border from India and there's a train to/from the border to Calcutta, so you have other options besides your flight. I was going the other direction from you, but I took a bus from the border crossing to Khulna.
