  • Observational drawing vs drawing from the imagination: I had to lay out the distinction between these two modes of drawing and how to work them together. What do you think about the pros and cons between the two? Let's talk in the comments!

Wish you success here on YT! Like your content.
What advice you can give for a total beginner in drawing, who wishes to be a decent artist at least? Like what is real steps, from what to begin when I take pencil and paper or iPad?

Thank you! And as to your question: I would advise drawing what you like! I want to make a video about this at some point; but I think people learn best to through emulation, so if you like certain images I would constantly be trying to replicate them. Draw everyday and don’t worry too hard about the result-it’s a slow process but the act of doing it constantly will naturally level you up! 😁

@@Comicbooker Okay then :) It’s just there are many different opinions on how to start learning/drawing, but I was thinking of this path as well. Thank you)

@@Comicbooker I had the same question as well my passion lies with comics but there's so many videos on how to get to that point and I am currently in school for fine arts but I just feel like I've made no progress so I do hope you make a video to help out beginners especially the ones that want to go into comics or something similar it's hard trying to find that information.

Wouldn't drawing from memory be sorta like drawing from observation? Like ofc it depends on what you are drawing but when you think about what you want to draw the brain tends to pull up memories of what you've observed in the real world or on the internet in the past... so in a way it's a bit like drawing from what you see as all you are doing is pulling images/references and memories that you've stored in your brain. Ofc it's not the same as drawing from what you see in front of you and memories can get fuzzy but still...

Everything filters through your brain so in that sense they're both the same. But one is paring down from 100% visual stimuli (cause it's right in front of you), while the other builds up from 0% (because it's not). Either way, it's a challenge, requiring different ways of thinking. I suspect the best artists constantly use both in tandem. :D

I can’t really hear the footsteps from above, and only barely when you mentioned them.

Yeah it seems that my mic is pretty good at blocking it out. Maybe I don't need to be so self-conscious about it, haha! Needless worrying. 😜

Really insightful! I never thought about switching between them - memory and visual.

Thank you! Yeah I don't know if people actually talk about working with these two together much. In my experience, teachers tend to get myopic about teaching one over the other (which is natural).

So, they had mainly comics in the Library of Alexandria!!! One more reason to still miss it!!!

Haha yeah that's actually a shot of my local comic store (Midtown Comics) but I would bet Alexandria had some comics in it! 😂
