An VERY abridged version of Bartok's Viola Concerto, that was left unfinished at his death. Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala is conducted by Riccardo Muti.
One of my viola friends is playing this piece currently, so thanks for posting this little snippet- gave me a chance to better understand what the orchestra is doing during the solo passages.
I was at La Scala in April and am pretty sure I noticed Danilo in the orchestra and wondered about him. Am a violist myself. Beautiful performance of a striking and difficult piece.
I like Xiao, but my favorite recording is the late Julliard quartet's violist Raphael Hillyer with the Tokyo. Truly awesome playing. The very best live performance I've seen of this concerto was Yuri Bashmet with Philly. OUTSTANDING!
My favorite version of this concerto is by the violist Hong Mei Xiao. I sent my CD booklet and she autographed it for me and I keep it in my viola case for good luck. This guy is good, though. I wish the sound quality of the clip was better and I wish it was complete.
Never heard of this Danilo Rossi before, but he is really wonderful! I have never heard such a rich and melting tone from the viola before! I would really like to hear the entire concerto, which I have never particularly been fond of before.
hey prof, could u reccomend some viola pieces to me? all i ever listen to is violin but since discovering the sound of the viola im hooked. unfortunately there arent that many violists around.. so im a bit lost. any help would be appreciated!
I like this length, actually. A step-child of the Bartok Canon at best. Too bad Primrose was more concerned about finding a parking place in Manhattan near Bartok's apartment than with making sure the concerto was playable. Next time old Bill was in the area Bartok was dead. September of '45.

His viola is so beautiful, I love its tone. Good clip.

La Scala in Milan. It's an opera house.
Just great! What a wonderful piece of music this is. The various editions of this work have been controversial though.
Sweet, one more piece of music I won't rest until I obtain a recording of. I'm off to amazon@
Best italian violist after Piero Farulli, actually Rossi made part of the Italian Youth Orchestra, founded by Farulli himself.
Vismara is another great Italian violist , I had masterclass with both Farulli and Vismara they are amazing
Where could we find the complete recording?
excellent execution... but the quality of sound and video is very low... =(
Even that sounds amazing
