    Fantastic stuff! I see a Brazilian Satellite from Embratel show up (Star One)! That's where I'm from. Anyway, this is really fascinating, as much as we're all used to regular fiber connection and even plain old DSL/copper/whatever else there's something magical about radio telecom / wireless, especially when it goes to space!! Keep up the good work!

    Curious if you changed the codec to a lower bitrate if the audio would be smoother. I know it's going 90,000 miles so there is some data loss. You should try the infinite loop where you make a sound and it goes out and back and is picked up again and goes out over and over. Did the same thing with two repeating toys and the audio got noisier as it went through each of them.

    That is, like, 2-3 seconds? I'm impressed, all things considered. The voice quality is quite bad again though. Did you set both to be using the lower bit-rate codecs?
    Edit: I'm not sure what transport you are using exactly, but if you're going with the standard RTP over UDP over IP than expect up to 16kbps overhead form that!

    • @tschuuuls486
      @tschuuuls486 Рік тому +1

      They are digital so the quality theoretically would not be worse than a standard call. But he's using a protocol called udp, which means the data will be sent without any further checks (as opposed to tcp which would let the other end confirm the data has been received correctly and resend packets if neccessary). But in this case the available bandwith is very low and the call is using basically all of said bandwith, which basically means sometimes a few bytes "don't fit through the pipe" and get tossed away. That's why the call is so choppy. This could be improved as stated in the video. This is a 32kbit/s connection or 0,032Mbit/s ;)

    So iv been watching your videos recently about your phone calls and just had a few questions. You mentioned this has ethernet connection, does that connect you to the regular world wide web, or is it just a local internet hoested on that server now? And if it does connect to the world wide web is it limited to just the satellites field of view or do all these satellites connect to and talk to each other so information can be spread further? I find this stuff so fascinating.

    • @HangryGiant
      @HangryGiant Рік тому +5

      @peterfairlie2296 ok that makes sense, so how would you get more bandwidth then? And how do you know the phone numbers of these machines? Do they come with the numbers programed in the hardware or do you set your own phone numbers from that website you where using, or is it a service provider that gave you those number designations? Also one last question is can the satellite company track you using there signal/service and can they block you from using it in anyway?

    • @nonenowherebye
      @nonenowherebye Рік тому +1

      Getting faxing to work over satellite is brutally annoying. Faxing is fairly tolerant of delay, it is not tolerant of jitter (Jitter is quick changes in the delay). Those newertec modems have significant jitter issues. I once had solid faxing working over satellite, but I was using comtech modems in SCPC mode, and had equipment that actually demodulated the analog fax signal at both ends, and sent the digital stream over the network (known as T.38 faxing). It took a lot of work and delicate adjustments to get it working reliably. Thankfully faxing is a dying art.

    I guess Starlink really killed the last of these. 1/10 the weight, 1/10th the power, 1/100th the cost. Why are these terminals still active? I want to see if you could bond two or more Starlink dishes. Like with a peplink bonding type of thing. Or if two terminals were close enough would they start to cancel each other out enough to cause dropped packets.
    Starlink uses a bunch of sats side by side at their ground stations but I don’t know if they’re phased arrays. They’re all under domes so I assume they’re active tracking each bird as it flies overhead. You’d need a very powerful and large phased array to get to the power they’d need. And to defeat heavy rain. I wonder if they’ve done any terminal to user terminal tests yet where it didn’t go through any ground station. Just jumped from sat to sat until it found the other person.

    • @jspafford
      @jspafford Рік тому

      Supposedly they’re working on getting Starlink direct to iPhones with T-Mobile. Phone calls. That will be impressive. Using the internal antenna only. Dealing with the Doppler shifts. Seems like everyone has forgot their iPhone 14 now talks to sats just for text messages and tiny bits of location data.

    • @nonenowherebye
      @nonenowherebye Рік тому +5

      News organizations rarely used this kind of thing, they usually used higher bandwidth so they could send live broadcast quality video in real time. The advantage of doing it over DVB-S or DVB-S2 (in the modern era) is that they could do one feed, and then pull it down at many sites around the states. When I built and supported these things, I knew one guy who had his antenna setup down at that Chilean mine rescue some 10 years ago. He had the only dish there, and was feeding out live video to Fox, CNN, CNBC, Japanese networks, and a variety of others, and they were all picking it up live, and all paying him. You can't do that with an IP based system like StarLink. The two systems fill different needs, and are complimentary to each other.
