I cannot apologize for doing this joke in the first place for several reasons but I'll just articulate 2 here. First of all, I was in America when I did it. How can I be worried about people 10,000 miles away not at the show? Do comedians have to worry about offending people not even in their audience now? How far do the arms of the offense police reach? I am answerable to my audience. If they didn't appreciate the joke they would have let me know. But instead they rewarded me with applause and laughter. And neither me nor any comedy club got one single complaint even with Malaysians in the audience for over a year. I did this joke (a shorter one) in Singapore in comedy roast battles against Malaysian comics. They are witness to how raucous the laughter got. And of course they weren't offended, as they know this is the nature of comedy. One may argue "but you put it on the internet" - so? He didnt say it in a sneering manner, but still reasonably tongue in cheek about it. And Will Smith initially laughed at it too..which means Chris actually sucessfully delivered the humour after all. Its only when he realised Jayda was rollin her eyes, then did he make that bold move in slapping the offender. That said, I think Jocelyns comedy delivery skills has a long long way more to go compared to her fellow American counterparts to pull off edgy jokes. However, if you zoom out for a second, you'll see that there are tonnes of comics in the U.S., who crack jokes like these all the time. Famous ones too. Ricky Gervais being one of the main ones. The truth is, that offence is in the eye of the beholder. Unless of course the person telling the jokes INTENDS to offend you. That's different. But if all the intention is, is to make you laugh, and you get offended, the most you accurately say is, "The joke was offensive TO ME." Stand up commedian Jocelyn Chia recent comedy in US provoked heated backlash from Malaysia and Singapore. Jocelyn touched on history of separation of Singapore from Malaysia, she used vulgar words on Malaysia, she made fun, looked down and booed Developing Nations. She was wrong to say Malaysia Airlines cannot fly. She was wrong to say Malaysia has no internet. Worst was her reference to Malaysia Airlines MH370 that went missing on March 8, 2014 along with 239 passenger and crew which Jocelyn says is funny. Needless to say, her jokes was hurtful and offensive. Rubbing salt to wounds are many commedians coming out to support Jocelyn including our Malaysian ambassador to US Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz advising Malaysians not to be thin skinned, childish and get upset when someone insult or criticize us. Can vulgarity, insults, lies, people or country misfortune, disguised as jokes be acceptable? Unfortunately in comedy world, commedians can say anything for laughs and all are expected to laugh and not take it seriously. Isn't this similar to bullying? This must change. People must know that words hurt and have huge and wide ramifications and to think twice before they speak.

I'd like to offer a fresh perspective, to contrast all the politically correct and perhaps yes, some, heartfelt comments here. Look, I'm a healer, a mind+body+spirit practitioner, a priest, even, yes for real, and I was raised on kindness and love.
Got all that. I agree. Some things can be perceived as unkind.
However, if you zoom out for a second, you'll see that there are tonnes of comics in the U.S., who crack jokes like these all the time. Famous ones too. Ricky Gervais being one of the main ones.
The truth is, that offence is in the eye of the beholder. Unless of course the person telling the jokes INTENDS to offend you. That's different. But if all the intention is, is to make you laugh, and you get offended, the most you accurately say is, "The joke was offensive TO ME."
That said, we'll never know what the true intentions are, as Russell Peters puts it best. "Those are my thoughts. If I wanted them to be real, I would've f***ing said em." Truth.
I don't think any human, including this lady here, has a bad heart. Everyone makes mistakes, and by the way I'm not saying she did, as I'm no one to judge her journey. But I AM saying to those who ARE judging her negatively for this, in case you are, that look, all humans do make mistakes. That's up to her and her karma and her journey, to decide what's a mistake, and what isn't, and who and what she'd like to be known as.
I for one, would like to applaud her for speaking her mind, as negative or positive as that may be. It's called authenticity.
