Red mage a cool concept in FF1 that's basically fell to the wayside when "character that can do everything" became the norm and specialized classes had to be made better to compensate. This game and the two FFT sequels are the only games where the traditional ReD mage are good and by good I mean "you can give dualcast to another caster and break the game wide open".
The only reason they made it past FF1 was the NES/Famicom version having a bug that made their spells just as effective as white/black mages. If that had worked as intended they would have done half the damage or healing with the same spells and no one would have cared about them.
If there's one thing I learned from this series, that I somehow didn't know before, it's that it doesn't matter how good you are, it doesn't matter what your level is to an extent and it doesn't matter what job you choose. The only thing that matters is grind that cash and smash rods.
Man I'm fine with breaking rods but man you really didn't abuse Red Mage's twinkery enough. Poison, Charm, Toad, Sleep (spell and sleep sword), Old from ancient sword (Ronka Ruins), Berserk from power staff (You do have to get it from a drop in Exdeath castle though) are all death blows on bosses and foes weak to them. Windigo for example is weak to sleep. Mini and silence are great for situational use as well. Status affects are actually useful in FF5. Stuff like breaking poison rods on bone mail lets you use running shoes as well still and heal. Since I noticed you had an issue with Calofisteri in case it happens in the future for some other classes just note you can slap on bone mail and laugh at her drain counters.
I thought that early whip was a nice get, didn't realize it was a free Garula fight though! Wasn't expecting the Red Mage run to be a rod-smashing extravaganza but I'm here for it. Boosts are such a good fit for FF5 in particular, for stocking up without over-levelling and for building up Almagest-worthy HP. I will never live down the time I convinced a streamer that Red Mages could cast Shell. They marched all the way back out of the rift to buy it. It would have been perfect! Almagest would deal half damage! Red Mages get Protect, of course they'd get Shell too! Nooooope. DX Ooh, Flame Rings for Wendigo is a fun strat. Good thing is at least though in a game where healing items cost a lot of money and raise costs a good amount of mp, a job that can equip staffs on here lets you use the healing staff, which is so helpful.
Red mages are red for two reasons: 1. D&D. FF started off as a D&D ripoff, and red is the "neutral" colour for wizards as opposed to black or white. 2. Fighters wear red.
I just finished a run with all bards through the earth crystal and I’ll just say when you get to it, don’t forget that the fire ring gives extra defense- I had PLENTY of money left over from grinding levels to beat adamantoise, and healing from fire rings is the only reason I beat archie.
This playthrough really highlighted to me just how "kinda okay" red mages are at everything. Great for filling gaps in a party, but not your star player. Of course, a team full of supporting players is going to have a lot of trouble.
They're not even good at that. By Galuf World the utility provided by Level 3 spells starts to wane, Black Mages get access to Bio and Drain, Time Mage gets Comet and White Mages get Shell and Blink (they got Esuna way earlier). And unless you grind AP you're definitely not close to Dual Cast at that point. Hell before you reach it you'll get the access to Level 5 Magics meaning that even when Red Mage finally gets the big Prize it's better used by Those classes. And Because !Dualcast is a command you have to equip Red Mage can't even benefit from it to a degree Black, White, Time, Blue or Summoner do. For those that don't know Dual Cast inherently provides an equipped unit with Red Magic 3 Meaning Red Mage Gets just the ability to dual cast while others get the extra spells (and they all have higher Magic Stat)
The thing that troubles me the most about these runs is the diaganol movement. It's oddly disconcerting, since I've only ever played the orignal SNES version.
