  • Today's video takes a look at what I think may be the best sim racing wheel available today - the Precision Sim Engineering GPX.
    The GPX is, without shadow of a doubt the best sim racing wheel I've ever had the chance to use. Though with the uncompromising nature of the design, materials, components, construction and finishing perhaps that's not so much of a surprise.
    If you're interested in taking a look at the Precision Sim Engineering GPX wheel, take a look at their website:

      The "quality" obviously just comes from buttons and shifters.

      Farouk Musa It's a yoke. A yoke!!!
      Carbon isn't as expensive as you think.
      Electronics cost like 50 bucks and a full carbon body maybe 200 if you make it really thick (here they even say it's not full carbon).
      The full body here is simply 3d printed. Just a little carbon looking aluminium plate on top. Knobs and switches can cost like 10 a piece if they are metal, okay................ These here are just simple plastic ones you can buy everywhere.
      Quick releases like this range from 50-150
      All the sim stuff is heavily overpriced. 2500 is a complete joke.

    I, and a few other guys I race with, have had the conversation on the PSE wheels, and do tend to agree that having a "funky" switch on a Sim wheel is pretty important in a Sim compared to an IRL car. Sufficiently so that if someone had the money to burn on this, they may look at an Ascher or Cube instead.
    Not to say it's necessary by any stretch, but definitely is SO handy to have available.

    I had the pleasure of trying out this wheel late last year and it certainly lived up to my expectations. It's solid as anything and the injection-moulded grips feel sublime, along with the shift paddles. One thing I found myself doing though was accidentally activating the top rotary if I moved my thumb to try and get some extra purchase or open my grip up a bit. I guess it's a bad habit of mine, and obviously modern F1 wheels are not designed for your grip to move in the slightest. I may one day look at buying this wheel, although the price is a bit hard to justify. The Lm-pro wheel that Max Verstappen uses is just as well made but half the price (after AU import duties) thanks to the less complicated layout and lack of a display; it makes more sense if you're in VR as well. Something like that might be what I ultimately end up going with when I go direct drive in a few years.

    This is the type of high-quality product I'd personally buy even at a higher price. Its that good. However, like many promising products, it fails short with those cheap stickers around the buttons. Just cheap and horrible. Even if they decided not to laser-etch the commands on the wheel for customization's sake (though that could work through a bespoke program and a symbolic fee), at least recessing the areas beneath the stickers would have helped a lot to maintain the premium theme as well as protect the stickers from peeling off. The wheels is brand new yet some stickers show signs of coming off already. Such a let down for what could be described as the sexiest wheel on sale today.
    Your presentation, however, is just as magnificent as all the other videos you create. Thank you Chris.

      @kolokolok 5 років тому

      @@NicolaosSoldal In Formula 1 you have a team of up to 1500 in a single team dedicated to do whatever lasts for 45 minutes only. They change the tires in 1.9 seconds and the entire front crash structure in 30 seconds. Reliability isn't their concern but whatever does the job for 45 minutes. Would you really be satisfied changing the stickers (or any other part/accessory every session on your sim rig? hell, even once per month? The only way for the stickers to be protected is, again, by being placed 'inside' a recessed area (like a sunken dish) so that the movement of your finger tip never touches the edges of the stickers or by painting/laser-etching them so they last for the longest time. As much as I adore this wheel, it is still an unfinished product, especially given the price it dictates.

    • @NicolaosSoldal
      @NicolaosSoldal 5 років тому

      @@kolokolok No I am aware about F1 stats, but I would be happy with high quality stickers, and if they provide replacements, even better. That's my personal opinion though. I've used wheels with stickers on them in the past, both in my Rig and In a track car. This was never really an issue for my self, which is why I highly doubt the stickers are going to come off or wear as much as you believe, unless you are consistently rubbing stuff on it. The grips will wear before the stickers. This is always my first concern with high end rims.

  • @no_fb
    @no_fb 5 років тому +1

    Thanks for the video, it's very interesting! It seems this product has a huge scope problem. As you said, PSE is coming from pro market and tries to target the general public. But even in the pro market, "uncompromising" is a synonym of over-budget, badly targeted product, and that will be of course even more obvious in the general sim market (which is not very large). Most people will look at this as an awesome product but the price will simply not meet their utility, and we know what that means, it will not sell much.
    For example, using top materials ("aero-space grade aluminium", which rather sounds like meaningless marketing term, and single-pieced body) for parts that would already have been perfect with ordinary materials and a common assembly process is unnecessary. Likewise, what is the use of such a high-cost display when it is duplicated on the screen... and more readable on screen actually, since the users don't have to change their vision's field depth - for the few who aren't simply in VR in the first place.
    Finally, what makes a racing wheel great is the motor base, the wheel is only a small fraction of the perceived quality. So overall, they have spent a lot of money in irrelevant features.

    Answering the OP question. Hardware wise, Yes. Software, no. It’s weird that such a top wheel at such a price has very little flexibility on the Dash and uses Fanaleds to program the LEDs. At that price point one would expect a dedicated software to come along that gives high flexibility when programming the Dash and LEDs

    It’s very cool but tbh you can buy pretty much the same wheel but it will be from the Ferrari SF1000. It has the the screen and a lot of buttons that are on the actual Ferrari SF1000. And it just costs 350€ or something. Yeah it’s just a wheel add-on but if you compare to this one that costs more than 2000$ then I’ll pick the Ferrari one.

      I would have felt a lot less nervous about blowing so much money on a new-in-box Driving Force Pro in 2004 if I had known it would still be going strong 15 years later. Credits to Logitech for making such a sturdy product, and continuing to support it today. (They have Windows 10 drivers for the thing!)

    Value proposition for non pros is extremely low. Most of us wont use the wheel to its potencial or for what it was made. For that price I can buy a fanatec dd wheel with the bmw rim and their formula v2 rim and a set of csl pedals with loadcell. Te difference in quality will not be that noticeable for most of us and you will be just as well served. Sure that one might "feel" nicer in your hands but it is not worth 10x the price of a fanatec rim (I stree again that this is for us bot for professionals. For pros it is another argument). I struggle to think of a situation where I have $2400 to spend and ai decide to spend it on a single rim. I could do a full day track day with an lmp2 car for that ammount of money and that will be a lot better.

    • @ChrisHaye
      @ChrisHaye  5 років тому +1

      I get where you're coming from dude. But, there are plenty of people out there that spend £5000 on a set of golf clubs, or a custom shop Stratocaster. To each their own and all that.

    • @andyholmes9485
      @andyholmes9485 5 років тому +1

      Have to agree. Value proposition is not the right term. Its a fine piece of engineering but doesn't really hold value for sim racing.

    • @Heldermaior
      @Heldermaior 5 років тому

      @@ChrisHaye i would spend 5k on a fender faster than this because I could hope to be good enough to use the fender for its intended purpose. Further, I will spend about that value on sim racing gear in the near future (that is how I had the cost of the fanatec dd wheel rim and pedals off the top of my head) I just think that this particular item does not give you better performance (we can argue that nothing sounds like a fender stratocaster) and will not provide you with a better experience than a 10th of the price fanatec rim. Thar is my point. If i was a pro sim racer or racer and spent 10 hours a day using the simulator to improve myself and access to all that telemetry on the fly was of paramount importance to me, then such wheel might be justifiable. As is, I just don't think there is anything there for the average joe.
      Ok, tl:dr, besides the "I want to have one factor", there is nothing appealing about this rim. It doesn't perform better than the competition and the average simracer wont use it nearly ebough to justify the industrial rade cobstruction.
      Of course this is my opinion and I could be wrong.
